Book excerpt: “A gripping tale of what happens when an author’s world shifts 180 degrees” DAVID NIALL WILSON Bram Stoker Award Author of Deep Blue & The Parting Beth Shepherd is a forty-nine-year-old, twice-divorced, mid-list crime writer whose life is unraveling. Even though she lives in beautiful Santa Cruz, California, she can’t pull herself together. She’s past deadline on her new book, over budget, and her New York agent, Marty Schienman, is applying pressure via hysterical phone calls and emails. Meanwhile, things are bad at home, as her gay son is doing his best to reunite with his deadbeat dad—although even Beth has been feeling pretty “deadbeat” lately. Her fictional NYPD homicide detective, Katie Shields, seems to be turning on her with every new page. Finally, she finds out that her long-time champion Marty is dying of cancer, and it’s all Beth can take. That’s when something unbelievable happens. Katie, a fictional character, hijacks Beth’s mess of a manuscript. She stops existing in fiction-land and gets on the case of her creator, ultimately helping Beth face what she must face from her son’s burgeoning relationship with his dad, to Beth’s relationship with her brothers, to her dealing with Marty’s illness. As Beth gains control of her book and her life, she solves the biggest case of her career.
Download or read book The Beth Book written by Grand, Sarah and published by Victorian Secrets. This book was released on 2013 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1897, The Beth Book – Being a Study from the Life of Elizabeth Caldwell Maclure, a Woman of Genius, is a semi-autobiographical novel offering a portrait of the artist as a young woman. Grand’s compelling story recounts in vivid detail the childhood of her young heroine, Beth, a spirited and intelligent girl who challenges the limitations of provincial life in Ireland and Yorkshire. Without the benefit of formal education, Beth must make her own way through adolescence, contending with a violent mother and an alcoholic father. With little money to go round, Beth often goes without so that her brothers might be raised as gentlemen, thus giving her an early introduction to sexual inequality. Even in girlhood Beth challenges gender expectations, dressing as a boy and poaching rabbits for the family dinner table. Like Grand herself, Beth makes an early marriage to escape her unhappy childhood, becoming the wife of philandering doctor, Daniel Maclure. Disillusion soon turns to defiance, as Beth recreates herself as a woman of genius, with her rousing refrain of “I shall succeed!” After escaping to a room of her own, Beth becomes a New Woman, setting a high standard both for herself and for other women. Grand’s extraordinary recall of childhood emotions, avoiding Victorian sentimentality, makes The Beth Book a convincing and captivating chronicle of female adolescence. The coming of age and sexual awakening of Beth broadens into a consideration of wider social issues, such as marital violence, vivisection, and the sexual double standard. The Beth Book deserves to be seen as a classic of the Victorian age. This new edition, the first for almost twenty years, includes: A critical introduction by Jenny Bourne Taylor Explanatory footnotes Bibliography Contemporary reviews A selection of other writings by and about Sarah Grand

This book was released on 2024-07-19 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intrigued by whispers of a community connection, Beth picks up the book chronicling Meghan’s life after graduate school. As both women navigate careers amid outdated attitudes about women’s place, they discover the persisting barriers of a man’s world. While Meghan conducts research into the decline of family farms, her work conjures Beth’s own rural upbringing and current reality as a farm wife straddling tradition and technology. Their parallel sexual awakenings underscore the universality of women’s experience. An insider’s glimpse of Meghan’s faculty position reveals to Beth the complex machinery underlying campus life. As Beth reflects on the roads untaken, Meghan’s bold choices highlight the excitement missing from Beth’s more traditional path. Ultimately, their interwoven stories surface timeless questions about agency, destiny, and the feminine struggle to balance fierce independence with enduring community. Do we ever really choose our fate, or does life choose for us?

Download or read book Beth written by Jeffery Young and published by Fulton Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2020-12-17 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A black widow spider kills beauty every time it eats. But in itself, it’s beautiful. People who say that high school is the best time to live are too wrapped up in themselves to realize they are not the center of the world and too stupid to admit that they will not live forever! Being a teenager is tough. Having to live in a world as a seventeen-year-old girl is even harder. Beth Davis and Marjorie Williams were best friends who began high school as teenagers, but only one would survive to be a woman. Beth was a Christian; Marjorie was not. When Beth succumbed to spinal meningitis, leaving behind a full and promising life. Marjorie began to learn that being popular and physically beautiful were all illusions that pass in time and end in death. Growing up in the late 1970s was a life of polyester dresses, bell bottoms, and fake IDs. Kids experimented with marijuana, sex, and cocaine, which seemed to wait outside like the door prize on their eighteenth birthday. Disco was not a myth, and Barry Manilow’s “Copacabana” was a hit. Seeing young women at clubs in nice dresses and clean-cut boys with styled hair was a pleasant change from the hippie generation. As Neil Sedaka would later write, “They had groove, they had feeling!” The perfect cloister inside the high school bubble shielded an aspiring generation from most of the heartaches of reality. Then death struck down Beth without warning, and youth was shattered, leaving an empty shell. Just like the spider devours the butterfly leaving behind only beautiful wings, so does spinal meningitis leave a fallen little girl. As life goes on in nature, so do goodness and love survive the human heart. Marjorie learned she needed Jesus.
