Book excerpt: The first time Pierce Brosnan went to the cinema, aged 11, he watched a James Bond film. At the age of 27, he married a James Bond girl. He had the chance of playing James Bond himself at the age of 33 but lost the role due to contractual obligations. He was 41 when he was formally announced as the fifth actor to play James Bond on June 8, 1994, playing the role for a decade in four productions and three original video games. One could say that it was written that at some point of his life Brosnan would play Ian Fleming's secret agent, and this happened during a particular time where the world was going through many cultural, technological and political changes. This book offers an in-depth look to the era that took the franchise to new heights from the 1990s to the first years of the new millennium, remarking the importance that Pierce Brosnan's portrayal of James Bond has had to guarantee the continued success of 007 into the 21st century.

Nowadays, we are often assured by the cool touch of technology when confronted with fear. Help is just a call away. But the creatures of the dark await in the shadows, laughing at our foolishness, for their powers transcend those of man's modern gadgets. Could Pasand, a man of the millennium, ever think that his cell phone would be of no help as he is caught in the clutches of the family in the graveyard? Could Harley Warren, a researcher of forbidden subjects, ever imagine that the telephone he was using to keep in touch with his friend as he explored the dark depths of a sepulchre would be useless in the face of danger? These and other elements of the night find place in this book compiled by India's favourite author, Ruskin Bond. Comprising stories by Rudyard Kipling, H.H. Munro, Bram Stoker and others, Night of the Millennium will chill you to the bone!

Book Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era

Download or read book Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era written by Ben Wright and published by LSU Press. This book was released on 2013-11-04 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Civil War era, Americans nearly unanimously accepted that humans battled in a cosmic contest between good and evil and that God was directing history toward its end. The concept of God's Providence and of millennialism -- Christian anticipations of the end of the world -- dominated religious thought in the nineteenth century. During the tumultuous years immediately prior to, during, and after the war, these ideas took on a greater importance as Americans struggled with the unprecedented destruction and promise of the period. Scholars of religion, literary critics, and especially historians have acknowledged the presence of apocalyptic thought in the era, but until now, few studies have taken the topic as their central focus or examined it from the antebellum period through Reconstruction. By doing so, the essays in Apocalypse and the Millennium in the American Civil War Era highlight the diverse ways in which beliefs about the end times influenced nineteenth-century American lives, including reform culture, the search for meaning amid the trials of war, and the social transformation wrought by emancipation. Millennial zeal infused the labor of reformers and explained their successes and failures as progress toward an imminent Kingdom of God. Men and women in the North and South looked to Providence to explain the causes and consequences of both victory and defeat, and Americans, black and white, experienced the shock waves of emancipation as either a long-prophesied jubilee or a vengeful punishment. Religion fostered division as well as union, the essays suggest, but while the nation tore itself apart and tentatively stitched itself back together, Americans continued looking to divine intervention to make meaning of the national apocalypse. Book A Millennium Primer for Elected Municipal Officials

Download or read book A Millennium Primer for Elected Municipal Officials written by Matthew Bonnet and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2001-06 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Millenium Primer for Elected Municipal Officials is the natural product of twenty years of public service and living and working in the political maelstrom called small town politics. Matthew Bonnet takes each of the normal operational divisions of the typical municipality and explores its deepest recesses. He searches for the humor and irony found in each area, but at the same time he exposes its weaknesses and strengths. Bonnet exaggerates and overstates, but he does not lie. As ridiculous as some of his examples and anecdotes may seem, they are true. Sad. But true. Many good men and women serve their communities as elected officials for several years without having a clue as to some of the things Bonnet exposes in this Primer. There are no sacred cows left standing when Bonnet leaves the room. Civil Service, City Attorneys, Fire Departments, State regulators and inspectors, Congressmen, and even the Great Generation, all fall prey to his pen. Those who know Bonnet understand that his sarcasm and honesty is tempered with love and respect for those with whom he has spent most of his life working. But that does not buy them a free pass from the scrutiny of the dreaded Primer.

Book Questioning the Millennium

Download or read book Questioning the Millennium written by Stephen Jay Gould and published by Crown. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new edition of Questioning the Millennium, best-selling author Stephen Jay Gould applies his wit and erudition to one of today's most pressing subjects: the significance of the millennium. In 1950 at age eight, prompted by an issue of Life magazine marking the century's midpoint, Stephen Jay Gould started thinking about the approaching turn of the millennium. In this beautiful inquiry into time and its milestones, he shares his interest and insights with his readers. Refreshingly reasoned and absorbing, the book asks and answers the three major questions that define the approaching calendrical event. First, what exactly is this concept of a millennium and how has its meaning shifted? How did the name for a future thousand-year reign of Jesus Christ on earth get transferred to the passage of a secular period of a thousand years in current human history? When does the new millennium really begin: January 1, 2000, or January 1, 2001? (Although seemingly trivial, the debate over this issue tells an intriguing story about the cultural history of the twentieth century.) And why must our calendars be so complex, leading to our search for arbitrary regularity, including a fascination with millennia? This revised edition begins with a new and extensive preface on a key subject not treated in the original version. As always, Gould brings into his essays a wide range of compelling historical and scientific fact, including a brief history of millennial fevers, calendrical traditions, and idiosyncrasies from around the world; the story of a sixth-century monk whose errors in chronology plague us even today; and the heroism of a young autistic man who has developed the extraordinary ability to calculate dates deep into the past and the future. Ranging over a wide terrain of phenomena--from the arbitrary regularities of human calendars to the unpredictability of nature, from the vagaries of pop culture to the birth of Christ--Stephen Jay Gould holds up the mirror to our millennial passions to reveal our foibles, absurdities, and uniqueness--in other words, our humanity.

Book The Four Keys to the Millennium

Download or read book The Four Keys to the Millennium written by Jay Rogers and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2010-03-29 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Christians believe that their great God and Saviour, Jesus Christ, will one day return. Although we cannot know the exact time of his return, what exactly did Jesus mean when he spoke of the signs of his coming (Matthew 24)?How are we to interpret the prophecies in Isaiah regarding the time when 'the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD as the waters cover the sea' (Isaiah 11:9)? Should we expect a time of great tribulation or reformation and revivalbefore the Lord returns? How do we approach this inspired prophetic book? In what way do these approaches affect our interpretation of the thousand years of Revelation 20? Is the devil bound now, and are the saints reigning with Christ? These, and many more questions, are dealt with by the four authors in The Four Keys to the Millennium. The editor, Michael Meiring, also makes an analysis of the four essays, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of each view.
