Book The Manuscript and Meaning of Malory s Morte Darthur

Download or read book The Manuscript and Meaning of Malory s Morte Darthur written by Kevin Sean Whetter and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An examination of the rubricated letters in the Morte makes a convincing case for the design being by Malory himself. The red-ink names that decorate the Winchester manuscript of Malory's Morte Darthur are striking; yet until now, no-one has asked why the rubrication exists. This book explores the uniqueness and thematic significance of the physical layout of the Morte in its manuscript context, arguing that the layout suggests, and the correlations between manuscript design and narrative theme confirm, that the striking arrangement is likely to have been the product of authorial design rather than something unusual dreamed up by patron, scribe, reader, or printer. The introduction offers a thorough account of not only the textual tradition of the Morte, but also the ways in which scholarship to date has not done enough with the manuscript contexts of Malory's Arthuriad. The book then goes on to establish the singularity and likely provenance of Winchester's rubrication of names. In the second half of the study the author elucidates the narrative significance of this rubrication pattern, outlining striking connections between manuscript layout and major narrative events, characters, and themes. He suggests that the manuscript mise-en-page underscores Malory's interest in human character and knighthood, creating a memorializing function similar to the many inscribed tombs that dominate the landscape of the Morte's narrative pages. Inshort, Winchester's design creates a memorializing tomb for Arthurian chivalry. K.S. WHETTER is Professor of English at Acadia University, Canada.

Book Understanding Medieval Primary Sources

Download or read book Understanding Medieval Primary Sources written by Joel T. Rosenthal and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-03 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Medieval society created many kinds of records and written material which differ considerably, giving us such sources as last wills, sermons, manorial accounts, or royal biographies. Primary sources are an exciting way for students to engage with the past and draw their own ideas about life in the medieval period. Understanding Medieval Primary Sources is a collection of essays that will introduce students to the key primary sources that are essential to studying medieval Europe. The sources are divided into two categories: the first part treats some of the many generic sources that have been preserved, such as wills, letters, royal and secular narratives and sermons. Chapter by chapter each expert author illustrates how they can be used to reveal details about medieval history. The second part focuses on areas of historical research that can only be fully discovered by using a combination of primary sources, covering fields such as maritime history, urban history, women’s history and medical history. Understanding Medieval Primary Sources will be an invaluable resource for any student embarking on medieval historical research.

Book Humphrey Newton 1466 1536

Download or read book Humphrey Newton 1466 1536 written by Deborah Youngs and published by Boydell & Brewer Ltd. This book was released on 2008 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The public and political lives of the fifteenth- and early sixteenth-century gentry have been extensively studied, but comparatively little is known of their private lives and beliefs. Humphrey Newton of Pownall, Cheshire, offers a rare and fascinating opportunity to redress the balance, thanks to the fortunate survival of a commonplace book he compiled c.1498-1524. Drawing upon this unique manuscript, this interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional study of Newton explores his family life, landed estate, legal work, piety, and his literary skills [he composed nearly twenty courtly love lyrics]. It charts his social advancement and the self-fashioning of his gentle image, while placing him in the context of current discussions of gentry culture. What makes Newton even more noteworthy is that he was among the unsung and little known stratum of English society historians have labelled the 'lesser' gentry. As such, this book provides the first comprehensive biography of an early Tudor gentleman. Dr DEBORAH YOUNGS is lecturer in medieval history at Swansea University.

Book English Hawking and Hunting in the Boke of St Albans

Download or read book English Hawking and Hunting in the Boke of St Albans written by Juliana Berners and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1975 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Boke of St. Albans aimed to provide its readers with instruction in hawking, hunting, coat-armour and blazing arms, and the language proper to each. Compiled in 1486 from a number of sources by the 'Schoolmaster Printer' of St. Albans, it proved immediately popular and was well used for about a century and a half, forming the basis of several later works on the same subjects. Today its appeal is two-fold: being so very early an example of vernacular English provincial printing, it is of interest to the bibliographer and antiquarian, while in content it is of importance to any study of life in the late medieval and early renaissance period, and to an understanding of many references and allusions in the contemporary literature. This edition covers the first two sections (hawking and hunting), together with the additional and related material used by the printer to complete the last gathering of each, and aims in particular to facilitate an understanding of fifteenth-century sporting practice and terminology. The text is provided in facsimile, with a brief bibliographical and linguistic discussion, close examination of the sources, and detailed commentary upon the subject-matter. A useful feature is the classified index, which enables the book to be used as a reference work in conjunction with similar treatises and contemporary literature." --Book jacket.

Book The Culture of Food in England 1200 1500

Download or read book The Culture of Food in England 1200 1500 written by C. M. Woolgar and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-01 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this revelatory work of social history, C. M. Woolgar shows that food in late-medieval England was far more complex, varied, and more culturally significant than we imagine today. Drawing on a vast range of sources, he charts how emerging technologies as well as an influx of new flavors and trends from abroad had an impact on eating habits across the social spectrum. From the pauper's bowl to elite tables, from early fad diets to the perceived moral superiority of certain foods, and from regional folk remedies to luxuries such as lampreys, Woolgar illuminates desire, necessity, daily rituals, and pleasure across four centuries.
