Book The Author as Character

Download or read book The Author as Character written by A. J. Hoenselaars and published by Fairleigh Dickinson Univ Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Many fictional works have real, historical authors as characters. Great national literary icons like Virgil and Shakespeare have been fictionalized in novels, plays, poems, movies, and operas. This fashion might seem typically postmodern, the reverse side of the contention that the Author is Dead; but this collection of essays shows that the representation of historical authors as characters can boast of a considerable history, and may well constitute a genre in its own right. This volume brings together a collection of articles on appropriations of historical authors, written by experts in a wide range of major Western literatures."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Named the Gouernour, Vol. 1 of 2: Deuised by Sir Thomas Elyot, Knight, Edited From the First Edition of 1531 It is easy to predict the kind of work which would be likely to be produced under such circumstances and by an editor who regarded his duty in such a light, and when we compare Mr. Eliot's 'emendations' with the text of his author, the result seems hardly satisfactory. In the following instances, taken at random, it cannot be said that Mr. Eliot's design 'to simplify the com position of the original, ' has been skilfully executed. For 'abrayded' (vol. II. P. 72) Mr. Eliot prefers to read prayed, ' for adumbrations' (vol. II. P. 403) 'adjura tions, ' for 'prease' (vol. II. P. 48) 'praise, ' for 'bayne' (vol. II. P. 282) 'vain, ' for 'craftes man'. Book Princely Education in Early Modern Britain

Download or read book Princely Education in Early Modern Britain written by Aysha Pollnitz and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-05-19 with total page 463 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the sixteenth century, Erasmus of Rotterdam led a humanist campaign to deter European princes from vainglorious warfare by giving them liberal educations. His prescriptions for the study of classical authors and scripture transformed the upbringing of Tudor and Stuart royal children. Rather than emphasising the sword, the educations of Henry VIII, James VI and I, and their successors prioritised the pen. In a period of succession crises, female sovereignty, and minority rulers, liberal education played a hitherto unappreciated role in reshaping the political and religious thought and culture of early modern Britain. This book explores how a humanist curriculum gave princes the rhetorical skills, biblical knowledge, and political impetus to assert the royal supremacy over their subjects' souls. Liberal education was meant to prevent over-mighty monarchy but in practice it taught kings and queens how to extend their authority over church and state.

Book Money and Magic in Early Modern Drama

Download or read book Money and Magic in Early Modern Drama written by David Hawkes and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-12-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Money, magic and the theatre were powerful forces in early modern England. Money was acquiring an independent, efficacious agency, as the growth of usury allowed financial signs to reproduce without human intervention. Magic was coming to seem Satanic, as the manipulation of magical signs to performative purposes was criminalized in the great 'witch craze.' And the commercial, public theatre was emerging – to great controversy – as the perfect medium to display, analyse and evaluate the newly autonomous power of representation in its financial, magical and aesthetic forms. Money and Magic in Early Modern Drama is especially timely in the current era of financial deregulation and derivatives, which are just as mysterious and occult in their operations as the germinal finance of 16th-century London. Chapters examine the convergence of money and magic in a wide range of early modern drama, from the anonymous Mankind through Christopher Marlowe to Ben Jonson, concentrating on such plays as The Alchemist, The New Inn and The Staple of News. Several focus on Shakespeare, whose analysis of the relations between finance, witchcraft and theatricality is particularly acute in Timon of Athens, The Comedy of Errors, Antony and Cleopatra and The Winter's Tale.
