Book excerpt: Uprooted from a well-ordered life in Virginia when she was nine, Willa Cather came of age in the West during the last years of the American frontier. She developed a love for the beauty of the open grassland and an abiding interest in the Old World customs of her neighbors, the dreamers and builders who inhabit her fiction. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Balfe's Opera Bohemian Girl: Containing the Italian d104, With an English Translation and the Music of All the Principal Airs Next we see Arline in her father's castle, sur rounded by wealth and splendor. But she does not forget the old love, or old friends. Thaddeus visits her. They are interrupted by the Count, who is furious at finding the low-bom lover with his daughter. She calmly replies to her father's menaces, and avows her unchangeable attach ment to Thaddeus. The latter, at this, explains to the Count that he is of high rank, like him self, being one of the unfortunate Polish noble men, who had been obliged to leave their native land, and that he had assumed gipsy life and habits for safety. This explanation pleases every one but the Gipsy Queen, who is a listener. She orders a gipsy to shoot Thaddeus, but the weapon of death is turned aside by Devilshoof. This book was released on 2018-09-07 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Grand Opera, in Three Acts, of the Bohemian Girl: First Performed in America at the Park Theatre, November, 1844 The production of the Bonemss girl. Last season, in London, produced a sensa tion never before experienced in that great metropolis. It became at once immensely popular, and was repeated for upwards of one hundred nights, to crowded and brilliant audiences. The elite of society honored the theatre with their presence, and the public became so delighted with the music, that it was played, and sung, in every drawing room and street in London. The libretto is by Bunn, the music by Balfe; a composer comparatively unknown in America, although ranking amongst the first of the first class in Europe, The story is closely adapted from the admirable ballet of the tsey. Which was produced at the Park Theatre about three years ago. The author of the piece has wisely transferred the scene from Scotland to Hungary; Scotia is too familiar to us, besides 9 s longittqtto image's placate. The story of M. M. Do St. George's and Mazzilier, selected the time of Charles the 2d - the author of the present drama has taken a corresponding period in the history of Poland. Thaddeus, (the name, no doubt, suggested by Mrs. Porter's novel is an exiled Polo, who, to screen himself from his pursuers, joins a band of Gipsies. And subsequently ingratiates himself into a certain Count's favor by saving his beloved child from the fury of a hunted stag. This child, in the w ry moment of thanksgiving for her safety, is, out of revenge, stolen by one of the Gipsies, Dcvelsbooj; and thus ends Act the First;-which contains several morceanz written in the composer's happiest mood.
