Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2012 in the subject Medicine - Anatomy, Physiology, Cytology, Ahmadu Bello University (Department of Human Physiology, Faculty of Medicine), language: English, abstract: ABSTRACT Changes in sex hormone during the menopausal transition are thought to have an important impact on weight gain. Obesity is known to be a determinant of health and disease; especially cardiovascular diseases. We studied the waist circumference, body mass index and its correlation with the blood pressure of a sample of menopausal women in Zaria. The height (m), weight (kg), waist circumference (cm) and blood pressure (mmHg) of the women was assessed using standard methods, while the body mass index (BMI ) in kg/m2 was calculated. 165 subjects participated in the study, 77 were premenopausal women while 88 were postmenopausal women with mean ages 25.51±0.60yrs and 53.59±0.65yrs respectively. The subjects were selected based on some exclusion criteria. Postmenopausal women were more likely to be overweight (mean BMI 25.96±0.53kg/m2) compared with their premenopausal counterparts (23.13±0.57kg/m2); p

The Study group includes 150 subjects of non-teaching staff members of government and private school of Warangal. There were 44 women and 106 men. At the point of entry into the study group of all the study subjects written informed consent from before stating of research work. Data was collected by trained Pharm D and M. Pharmacy paramedical students. The exclusion criterion was the co-existence of any other serious elements. A total number of 32 subjects were found to be normotensive in which 25 (17%) were men and 7 (5%) were women. Overall, 26 subjects were found to be pre-hypertensives whereas, 20 (13%) were men. A total number of 8 (5%) subject were found to be hypertensive of which 6(4%) men and 2 (1.3%) women. Our results highlighted that the waist circumference seems to have a strong association with the risk of hypertension, especially among men than women. In future studies should investigate lipid profile of study subjects to correlate hypertension management regardless of gender or age. Hypertension is a major public health problem world-wide and is one of the risk factors for coronary artery disease. The objective of the present study was to determine the relative role of abdominal fat accumulation on the relationship between excess body weight, and high blood pressure among men and women of non-teaching staff members of public school of Warangal.

Book Breast Cancer in Nigeria

Download or read book Breast Cancer in Nigeria written by Erhabor Osaro and published by . This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Worldwide, breast cancer is the commonest cancer in women and it is characterized by regional variations and late clinical presentation and poor access in low and middle income countries including Nigeria. It is disproportionately responsible for mortality among women in developing countries compared to those in developed countries. There are several challenges associated with the effective management of breast cancer in Nigeria; financial barriers limit women's access to screening and treatment services, late-stage presentation, high incidence of triple negative breast cancers and failure in stewardship by government in their inability to provide the best possible cancer care like their counterparts in the West. There is an urgent need to step up activities through governmental and non-governmental agencies to promote advocacy, national policy on training of personnel for diagnosis, clinical and self-breast examination and nationwide screening program (mammography) in order to enhance early detection, control the upward trends and reduce the mortality rate associated with breast cancer. Routine age appropriate and specific breast screening should become an integral part of healthcare system in Nigeria allowing for early detection and intervention; aggressive awareness campaign on the advantages of early diagnosis and the dangers of late presentation, need to offer universal and affordable treatment, implementation of a strategy to offer annual mammogram to women above the age threshold for breast cancer, increased budgetary allocation for the diagnosis and management of cancer, more investment in the training of healthcare workers involved in the diagnosis and management of breast cancer, provision of Health Education encouraging women to conduct routine Breast Self Examination (BSE). BSE could become a simple, low-priced, secure, effective, appropriate and feasible screening tool in Nigeria. There is need to re-emphasize the importance of prompt reporting of any new breast symptoms to a health professional. Clinical Breast Examination (CBE) should become part of a periodic health examination, preferably at least every three years. Asymptomatic women aged 40 and over should be offered a CBE as part of a periodic health examination, preferably annually. Objective implementation of these steps can help reduce the incidence of breast cancer-related mortality in Nigeria.

Download or read book An Intimate Rebuke written by Laura S. Grillo and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2019-01-10 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout West African societies, at times of social crises, postmenopausal women—the Mothers—make a ritual appeal to their innate moral authority. The seat of this power is the female genitalia. Wielding branches or pestles, they strip naked and slap their genitals and bare breasts to curse and expel the forces of evil. In An Intimate Rebuke Laura S. Grillo draws on fieldwork in Côte d’Ivoire that spans three decades to illustrate how these rituals of Female Genital Power (FGP) constitute religious and political responses to abuses of power. When deployed in secret, FGP operates as spiritual warfare against witchcraft; in public, it serves as a political activism. During Côte d’Ivoire’s civil wars FGP challenged the immoral forces of both rebels and the state. Grillo shows how the ritual potency of the Mothers’ nudity and the conjuration of their sex embodies a moral power that has been foundational to West African civilization. Highlighting the remarkable continuity of the practice across centuries while foregrounding the timeliness of FGP in contemporary political resistance, Grillo shifts perspectives on West African history, ethnography, comparative religious studies, and postcolonial studies.

Book excerpt: Nawal el Saadawi's classic tale attempts to square Islam with a society in which women are respected as equals is as relevant today as ever. 'People have become corrupt everywhere. You can search in vain for Islam, or a devout Muslim. They no longer exist.' Kafr El Teen is a beautiful, sleepy village on the banks of the Nile. Yet at its heart it is tyrannical and corrupt. The Mayor, Sheikh Hamzawi of the mosque, and the Chief of the Village Guard are obsessed by wealth and use and abuse the women of the village, taking them as slaves, marrying them and beating them. Resistance, it seems, is futile. Zakeya, an ordinary villager, works in the fields by the Nile and watches the world, squatting in the dusty entrance to her house, quietly accepting her fate. It is only when her nieces fall prey to the Mayor that Zakeya becomes enraged by the injustice of her society and possessed by demons. Where is the loving and peaceful God in whom Zakeya believes?"

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increased adiposity and decreased muscle mass contribute substantially to age-dependent disease and disability. In particular age-related increase in adiposity is quickly becoming a major threat to public health throughout the world. Although the hypothesis that age-related changes in body composition are due to lifestyle choices alone is well accepted, it is a vast oversimplification. This volume reflects the current knowledge in this rapidly developing field of research. The first part of the book discusses the extent to which increased adiposity contributes to age-related diseases and longevity. The 'obesity paradox', describing the protective role of overweight in decreasing mortality while increasing pathology, is covered in depth. Further chapters address specific aspects of the regulation of energy balance during aging, including the effects of changes in food intake. Finally the causes and consequences of loss of muscle mass and age-related osteoporosis are examined.A valuable help for physicians treating elderly patients, this book will also be of great interest to researchers studying energy balance, muscle physiology, bone disease, and other aspects of aging.

Book Night Noise Guidelines for Europe

Download or read book Night Noise Guidelines for Europe written by Charlotte Hurtley and published by WHO Regional Office Europe. This book was released on 2009 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The WHO Regional Office for Europe set up a working group of experts to provide scientific advice to the Member States for the development of future legislation and policy action in the area of assessment and control of night noise exposure. The working group reviewed available scientific evidence on the health effects of night noise, and derived health-based guideline values. In December 2006, the working group and stakeholders from industry, government and nongovernmental organizations reviewed and reached general agreement on the guideline values and key texts for the final document of the "Night noise guidelines for Europe". Considering the scientific evidence on the thresholds of night noise exposure indicated by "Lnight, outside" [L suffix night, outside] as defined in the Environmental Noise Directive (2002/49/EC), an Lnight, outside of 40 dB should be the target of the night noise guideline (NNG) to protect the public, including the most vulnerable groups such as children, the chronically ill and the elderly. "Lnight, outside" value of 55 dB is recommended as an interim target for the countries where the NNG cannot be achieved in the short term for various reasons, and where policy-makers choose to adopt a stepwise approach. These guidelines are applicable to the Member States of the European Region, and may be considered as an extension to, as well as an update of, the previous WHO "Guidelines for community noise" (1999).
