Book The Bobbio Missal

    Book Details:
  • Author : Yitzhak Hen
  • Publisher : Cambridge University Press
  • Release : 2004-03-11
  • ISBN : 9780521823937
  • Pages : 252 pages

Download or read book The Bobbio Missal written by Yitzhak Hen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-03-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bobbio Missal was copied in south-eastern Gaul around the end of the seventh and beginning of the eighth century. It contains a unique combination of a lectionary and a sacramentary, to which a plethora of canonical and non-canonical material was added. The Missal is therefore highly regarded by liturgists; but, additionally, medieval historians welcome the information to be derived from material attached to the codex which provides valuable data about the role and education of priests in Francia at that time, and indeed on their cultural and ideological background. The breadth of specialist knowledge provided by the team of scholars writing for this book enables the manuscript to be viewed as a whole, not as a narrow liturgical study. Collectively, the essays view the manuscript as physical object: they discuss the contents, they examine the language, and they look at the cultural context in which the codex was written.

Book Science and Art

Download or read book Science and Art written by Antonio Sgamellotti and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Science and art are increasingly interconnected in the activities of the study and conservation of works of art. Science plays a key role in cultural heritage, from developing new analytical techniques for studying the art, to investigating new ways of preserving the materials for the future. For example, high resolution multispectral examination of paintings allows art historians to view underdrawings barely visible before, while the use of non-invasive and micro-sampling analytical techniques allow scientists to identify pigments and binders that help art conservators in their work. It also allows curators to understand more about how the artwork was originally painted. Through a series of case studies written by scientists together with art historians, archaeologists and conservators, Science and Art: The Painted Surface demonstrates how the cooperation between science and humanities can lead to an increased understanding of the history of art and to better techniques in conservation. The examples used in the book cover paintings from ancient history, Renaissance, modern, and contemporary art, belonging to the artistic expressions of world regions from the Far East to America and Europe. Topics covered include the study of polychrome surfaces from pre-Columbian and medieval manuscripts, the revelation of hidden images below the surface of Van Gogh paintings and conservation of acrylic paints in contemporary art. Presented in an easily readable form for a large audience, the book guides readers into new areas uncovered by the link between science and art. The book features contributions from leading institutions across the globe including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York; Art Institute of Chicago; Getty Conservation Institute; Opificio delle Pietre Dure, Firenze; National Gallery of London; Tate Britain; Warsaw Academy of Fine Art and the National Gallery of Denmark as well as a chapter covering the Thangka paintings by Nobel Prize winner Richard Ernst.

Book excerpt: FT-Raman spectroscopy is one of the fastest growing areas in analytical chemistry today. Fourier Transform Raman Spectroscopy: From Concept to Experiment describes the nuances of the discipline from its conceptual beginning to its actual establishment as a viable analytical technique. It chronicles the rapid succession of scientific steps that brought FT-Raman spectroscopy from a laboratory curiosity to a marketable analytical instrument in only four years. Thetreatise contains a series of chapters written by those who participated in this exciting process and who have gone on to lead the march of Raman spectroscopy into the Fourier domain through their sustained contributions to the field. This book focuses on FT-Raman spectroscopy as a: Non-invasive technique for studying the structure of molecules containing chromophores Methodology to avoid interference by fluorescing impurities Routine technique for the structural characterization of materials Means to do quantitative analytical chemistry in the absence of resonance enhancement
