Book The Bluejacket s Manual 26th Edition

Download or read book The Bluejacket s Manual 26th Edition written by Lcdr Thomas J. Cutler USN (Ret) and published by . This book was released on 2022-11-15 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 26th edition of The Bluejacket's Manual continues the tradition of previous editions of this iconic work by serving as both an introduction to neophyte U.S. Navy Sailors and as a career-long reference work for all who wear the Blue and Gold. Readers of previous editions will note two significant changes in this latest rendition. The first recognizes the U.S. Navy's current emphasis on warfighting. While routine and administrative guidance--such things as uniforms, honors, and ceremonies, pay and benefits, standards of conduct, etc.--remain, this latest edition places greater emphasis on those aspects that Sailors are likely to encounter and must prepare for in the event of combat. The first chapter is titled and focused on warfighting, reflecting the emphasis on "Warrior Toughness" in the training curriculum at Recruit Training Command (AKA "boot camp") at Great Lakes, Illinois. Readers will find that this training emphasizes the psychological as well as practical aspects of preparation, providing a kind of "philosophy" that is tailored to Bluejackets who may well find themselves facing the challenges inherent to combat operations. Other chapters in the book--such as Weapons and Damage Control--complement this emphasis. The second major change to the book is its organization of information. The result is a more user-friendly book As always, the major purpose of revision is to bring the included information relevant and up to date. Readers will find coverage of those aspects of the Bluejacket's world that are evolving. Such things as cyberwar and drones are now included with the emphasis on warfighting. The Bluejacket's Manual, 26th Edition is a comprehensive yet manageable reference that will continue to serve the needs of the Navy and those who serve.

Book The Parent s Guide to the U S Navy

Download or read book The Parent s Guide to the U S Navy written by Thomas J Cutler and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Military ways can be enigmatic, resulting in an alien world where acronyms often replace words and where “1330” is a time of day. Add to that, the Navy is not only military, it is nautical, which adds centuries of sea-going terminology and practices to the confusion. While the young men and women who sign on to become sailors in the United States Navy receive extensive indoctrination and training, their parents do not. As their sons and daughters are becoming uniformed, the parents remain uninformed. This book is both a translation manual and a cultural guide to their son’s or daughter’s chosen new world. Alongside chapters covering uniforms, ranks, ships, and aircraft, are explanations and guidance as to what to expect when their child first joins the Navy, the many benefits their sailor will enjoy, and what families should bring and do when visiting their sailors in their new and somewhat alien world. Designed to be an easy read as well as a useful reference work, The Parent’s Guide to the U.S. Navy is essential reading for those parents whose children have chosen to “go down to the sea in ships.

Book Almost Anywhere

Download or read book Almost Anywhere written by Krista Schlyer and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2015-10-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What do you do when your world ends? At twenty-eight years old, Krista Schlyer sold almost everything she owned and packed the rest of it in a station wagon bound for the American wild. Her two best friends joined her—one a grumpy, grieving introvert, the other a feisty dog—and together they sought out every national park, historic site, forest, and wilderness they could get to before their money ran out or their minds gave in. The journey began as a desperate escape from urban isolation, heartbreak, and despair, but became an adventure beyond imagining. Chronicling their colorful escapade, Almost Anywhere explores the courage, cowardice, and heroics that live in all of us, as well as the life of nature and the nature of life. This eloquent and accessible memoir is at once an immersion in the pain of losing someone particularly close and especially young and a healing journey of a broken life given over to the whimsy and humor of living on the road.

Download or read book River of Redemption written by Krista Schlyer and published by Texas A&M University Press. This book was released on 2018-11-26 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Incorporating seven years of photography and research, Krista Schlyer portrays life along the Anacostia River, a Washington, DC, waterway rich in history and biodiversity that has nonetheless lingered for years in obscurity and neglect in our nation’s capital. River of Redemption offers an experience of the river that reveals its eons of natural history, centuries of destruction, and decades of restoration efforts. The story of the Anacostia echoes the story of rivers across America. Inspired by Aldo Leopold’s classic book, A Sand County Almanac, Krista Schlyer evokes a consciousness of time and place, taking readers through the seasons in the watershed as well as through the river’s complex history and ecology. As with rivers nationwide, the ways we’ve changed the Anacostia affect the people and wildlife that inhabit its shores, from the headwaters in Maryland, past its confluence with the Potomac River, and ultimately to the Chesapeake Bay. Centuries of abuse at the hands of people who have altered the landscape and mistreated the waterway have transformed it into a polluted, toxic soup unfit for swimming or fishing. The forgotten river is both a reminder of the worst humanity can do to the natural landscape and a wellspring of memory that offers a roadmap back to health and well-being for watershed residents, human and non-human alike. Blending stunning photography with informative and poignant text, River of Redemption offers the opportunity to reinvent our role in urban ecology and to redeem our relationship with this national river and watersheds nationwide.

Download or read book NavCivGuide written by Thomas J. Cutler and published by U.S. Naval Institute Blue & Go. This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The success of the U.S. Navy in its more than two centuries of existence is due not only to the essential contributions of Sailors on active duty and in the Reserve, but also to the civilians who have worked as part of the Navy since its earliest days. But active and Reserve Sailors are sent to boot camp or officer candidate school to prepare them for their unique occupation. And while the Navy has long provided The Bluejackets Manual to incoming Sailors to serve as an introduction and as a continuing reference guide so that they will feel more comfortable in a new and otherwise alien world, civilians working for the Navy have never been issued a similar guide to help them navigate a world where floors are decks, where 1337 is a time in the here-and-now instead of a date from ancient history, and where uniforms are anything but!" "While it is impractical to send all civilian workers to a centralized indoctrination course, it is possible to provide a common reference, specially designed to acquaint civilians with this very special world they have entered. NavCivGuide is that common reference guide designed specifically for those who, like the Sailors in the Fleet, serve the nation and the Navy, but who also need and deserve help in understanding where they are and what it is all about." "This guide provides new employees and veteran workers alike with the words and steps needed to succeed in the Navy. Just as The Bluejacket's Manual serves as a guide for Sailors, this book provides both new civilian and veteran employees with a ready reference to the culture and organization of the U.S. Navy. This key guide will provide all civilians with an understanding of the Navy's world of acronyms, n-codes, uniforms, and customs. Among its special features are sections on using military salutations properly, reading naval uniforms, understanding the workings of the Department of Defense, and an introduction to ships and airplanes. It is the only comprehensive guide to the military world of the U.S. Navy available for the civilian."--BOOK JACKET.

The sources and references have been many and varied and although the utmost care was taken, the Lists are far from complete and may contain errors. The original Codes etc were designed principally for marine use as this was the field in which radio was initially developed. The majority retain this influence but many have been modified and modernized to cover land and air applications. Technical terms have also varied as technology has changed however most abbreviations of the computer age have been omitted.
