Book Where Fate Beckons

Download or read book Where Fate Beckons written by John Dunmore and published by University of Alaska Press. This book was released on 2007 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: French explorer and naval officer Jean-François de la Pérouse (1741-88) was, after James Cook, the greatest explorer of the Pacific in the eighteenth century. In 1785, La Pérouse was commissioned by Louis XVI to head an expedition into the uncharted regions of the Pacific Ocean. Setting out from France, the expedition over the next three years was the first to map the coasts of California, Alaska, and Siberia. From there, La Pérouse continued to Easter Island and Hawaii, where La Pérouse Bay bears his name. After a stop in Botany Bay, Australia, La Pérouse's two ships set out for the Solomon Islands. En route, they encountered a storm and were sunk; despite search efforts over the centuries, no trace of the wreckage of La Pérouse's ships has been found. Where Fate Beckons tells the story of La Pérouse's life and adventures, along the way providing a lively introduction to the world of French colonialism, the end of the Age of Exploration, and French society in the years leading to the French Revolution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lucas mimics Stoker's style so well that it's hard to distinguish his own writing from passages interpolated from Dracula. A fully humanized character study.” – Publishers Weekly Perhaps the most infamous supporting character in all of Gothic Horror is R.M. Renfield, the unstable patient under observation at Dr. Seward’s Carfax Asylum in Bram Stoker’s Dracula—a pathetic wretch who prophesies the imminent arrival of “the Master” while covertly feeding on spiders and flies. Yet Stoker’s 1887 classic tells us almost nothing about him. Why—and how—was such an unsavory figure chosen to be the Un-dead Count’s groveling envoy? In this remarkable harbinger of the “mash-up” novel, author Tim Lucas—with the help of Stoker himself—takes us on an illuminating, magical, sometimes strangely erotic investigation into Renfield’s origin, fitted seamlessly within the language and the flurry of correspondence and other documentation found in Dracula. THE BOOK OF RENFIELD reinvigorates Stoker’s seminal horror masterpiece with numerous, uncanny stories within stories—alternately ghastly, marvelous, and hauntingly tender, framing DRACULA’s robust blood-and-thunder with a flair for meta and modernity. This Newly Revised Edition is extensively reworded and restructured, incorporating many paragraphs of content deleted from the original 2005 text. Also included is a contextualizing new Foreword by horror expert Stephen R. Bissette and a substantial Afterword by the author.

Book Nabokov in Motion

Download or read book Nabokov in Motion written by Yuri Leving and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2022-02-10 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adopting the modernist master Vladimir Nabokov as its guide, Nabokov in Motion: Modernity and Movement is an exploration of the radically changing social, historical, technological, and literary culture of the early 20th century, a time when modes of communication and transportation, especially, were changing society in drastic and profound ways. Across seventy microchapters that are by turn serious, ironic, informative, and playful, and which take on topics such as automobiles, trains, airplanes, electricity, elevators, advertisements, telegraphs, and telephones, Yuri Leving offers new ways to understand Nabokov, Russian literature, and technology, modernism, and world material culture. Nabokov's writings are analyzed against a broad context of prose and poetry and from the point of view of what Leving calls the poetics of urbanism in literature. Nabokov in Motion is a ground-breaking exploration of urban and material themes in literature and creates a complex and vibrant cultural fabric of which Nabokov is the master weaver.

  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book Gustav Mahler written by Kurt Blaukopf and published by Plunkett Lake Press. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Mahler’s great orchestral works have been gathering a massive audience. Perhaps his strongest following is among the young... As a logical corollary of the burgeoning interest in the music has come a new interest in the man. What kind of mind shaped the music, what social experience shaped the mind? [Blaukopf’s] portrait of Mahler [1860-1911] as a developing individual is securely drawn, despite the complexities of the subject.” — Carl Schorske, New York Times Book Review “The study makes fascinating reading... Mostly an account of [his] life and career, the book clears up a number of questions regarding the composer’s life and sheds new light on various aspects of his personality... the final chapter, a review of the Mahler literature and a discussion of the changing opinions about Mahler, is especially valuable.” — Library Journal “Goodwin’s excellent translation makes Blaukopf’s work readily available to English readers, and the book is filled with important insights [into] Mahler and his contemporaries... will be meaningful to all readers who enjoy Mahler’s music, and help convert those who do not.” — Choice “[A] concise and... comprehensive survey of Mahler’s life and work.” — Stereo Review
