Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 88th Division played a major role in the battle of Italy, where it was rated by the Germans after the summer of 1944 as the best American division in Italy. Because of the outstanding job it did in Italy, the 88th contributed its share to the winning of the war. It was the first of the draft infantry divisions to enter combat on any front in World War II and it was among the top divisions in the American Army. It won its share of territory and honors during its 344 days of combat. It paid dearly for all that it won—it lost 15,173 officers and men killed, wounded and missing in action. Only thirteen other divisions in the U.S. Army suffered heavier losses. The 88th fought its battles on what was called “a forgotten front.” Some day history will appraise the true worth of the Italian campaign in the overall war picture. Military historians will analyze and sift and publish detailed volumes on the operational contribution of the 88th in the battle for Italy. This book is not a history, in the true sense of the word. It is not intended to be such. It is rather the story of a combat division from its beginning to its end. It is a story compiled both from official journals and from the personal experiences of the citizen-soldiers who made up its squads and platoons. It is a story which never can be told in every complete detail. For every one of the incidents related here, a reader can remember scores that are not found in these pages. There are not enough words, or paper, to list them all. The incidents related are considered to be representative of the experiences of the majority of 88th men.

In a poor suburban community in southern Ohio, Dieter Vogel is a failing English teacher at a high school populated predominately by minority students. He is bullied by the basketball coach, neglected by the principal, ignored by his crush, Esther, and pressured to workout with Jose, the art teacher. Satan convinces Dieter to overthrow the school mascot, Gretel the Pretzel, so that the Devil can take its place. Dieter is promised Esther's love and the position of principal in return. All Dieter has to do is follow the Devil's advice and use classic literature to manipulate the students into a racially charged frenzy against the mostly white staff.

Book excerpt: The Blue Devils have received very little attention from jazz historians, though the band members and the writer Ralph Ellison (who sometimes sat in with them) spoke with conviction about their sterling musicianship and their legendary ability to defeat all competitors in battles of the bands. Chronicling the ten years the band was officially together, Douglas Daniels delves into the potent social and cultural history of the 1920s and the Depression to show the era's influence on the group's founding as well as on the players' careers.

Book Go Blue Devils

Download or read book Go Blue Devils written by Jim Elworth and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2011-11 with total page 676 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Plattsmouth, Nebraska lies at the confluence of the Platte and Missouri rivers. The people of Plattsmouth are proud of their small town's rich history, of their strength and determination as a community. They also share something that larger towns cannot, something that for generations has helped unite them and shape their very lives. What they share is a community-wide excitement on fall Friday nights, the rush of a close game, the heartbreaking losses, the exhilaration of a big win - what they share is the Plattsmouth Blue Devils. Go Blue Devils!: A History of Plattsmouth High School Football, 1893 -1979, by former Plattsmouth resident Jim Elworth, presents a one-of-a-kind account of a high school football team and the town that has rallied around it for more than one hundred years. Elworth's comfortable and at times humorous prose brings us season after season of game-day excitement, rendered in detail from years of researching and writing. But Go Blue Devils! is more than a story of game scores. It is a history of accomplished, hard working, down-to-earth townspeople. It is a history of the town itself, told through the exploits of local boys giving their all on the fields of sport. It is a story of those local boys inspiring their community and going on to live rich, positive and valuable lives.

Download or read book Jost Nickel s Snare Book written by Jost Nickel and published by Alfred Music. This book was released on 2019-11 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The title Snare Book tells its own tale: Jost Nickel's book is exclusively about snare exercises that will improve your hand technique and your general understanding of rhythm at the same time. Additionally, playing these exercises using different subdivisions and time signatures will further strengthen your rhythmic understanding and will make the exercises more interesting and less repetitive. I usually don't enjoy exercises where I have to play the same thing over and over again." says Jost. "My mind wanders off, and I find it a lot harder to keep practicing because of the lack of variation. As much as I agree that practice is repetition, I also never want to get bored when I practice." Chapter 1 offers a wide range of great warm-up exercises that combine well-known stickings with accentuations, subdivisions, or time signatures that are unusual for these stickings. Additionally, you'll find ostinato exercises to strengthen your independence and interlocking exercises to improve your coordination. "My Snare Book is definitely not your typical rudiments book," adds Jost. "I am confident that the exercises in this book are enjoyable and useful because they offer variations on different levels that will keep you engaged. That makes it easier to play the many repetitions you need to get better." The other chapters take a very systematic approach where Jost takes you step by step through different exercises on double-stroke rolls, flams, multiple strokes, ruffs, inverted double-stroke rolls, paradiddles, and more. Once you have understood the book's conceptual approach, you'll be able to create your own exercises. Simply keep the concepts but change the content, either on your snare drum or on your drum pad. A 12-page insert called "Reading Texts" is also included."
