Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Yang Wanli 杨万里 (1127-1206), courtesy name Yanxiu 延秀, style name Chengzhai 诚斋, was a famous literati and prominent politician in Southern Song. From the 12th to the 13th century he served four Southern Song emperors. Yang Wanli, You Mao 尤袤, Lu You 陆游, and Fan Chengda 范成大 were known as "The Four Prominent Poets of the Reviving Period" 中兴四大诗人 in the history of Chinese literature. Profoundly drawn to Zen Buddhism, Yang Wanli developed a distinctive style for poetic composition named the Chengzhai School, a quick sketch of daily occasions enlivened with poetic, graphic, whimsical charms. This style is unique for its uncontrived prose-like casualty. It is easy to grasp the image which naturally leads to a deeper metaphysical understanding. The publication is an analytical translation on a set of poems collected under the title of Boating In Appreciation of Flowers 《大司成颜几圣率同舍招游裴园泛舟绕孤山赏荷花晚泊玉壶得十绝句》. The set of ten quatrains was written during an outing on the West Lake in 1185. In this collection, the use of lotus flowers as a penetrating motif was characteristic of the masterful renderings of Chengzhai School.

Book A Cultural History of Plants in the Nineteenth Century

Download or read book A Cultural History of Plants in the Nineteenth Century written by David Mabberley and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 257 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Cultural History of Plants in the Nineteenth Century covers the period from 1800 to 1920, a time of astonishing growth in industrialization, urbanization, migration, population growth, colonial possessions, and developments in scientific knowledge. As European modes of civilization and cultivation were exported worldwide, botanical study was revolutionized – through the work of Charles Darwin and many others – and the new science of biology was born, based on cells, nuclei and molecules. As Darwinism took hold, plants came to be seen as a way of thinking about the connectivity of nature and life itself. The 6 volume set of the Cultural History of Plants presents the first comprehensive history of the uses and meanings of plants from prehistory to today. The themes covered in each volume are plants as staple foods; plants as luxury foods; trade and exploration; plant technology and science; plants and medicine; plants in culture; plants as natural ornaments; the representation of plants. David Mabberley is Emeritus Fellow at Wadham College, University of Oxford, UK; Emeritus Professor at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands; and Adjunct Professor at Macquarie University, Australia. Volume 5 in the Cultural History of Plants set. General Editors: Annette Giesecke, University of Delaware, USA, and David Mabberley, University of Oxford, UK.

Book Jihad in Paradise Islam and Politics in Southeast Asia

Download or read book Jihad in Paradise Islam and Politics in Southeast Asia written by Mike Millard and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-01-28 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written in an accessible, journalistic style, Jihad in Paradise focuses on Southeast Asia's struggle to deal with Islamic extremists and terrorism at the hands of Jemah Islamiyah, al Qaeda's Southeast Asian arm. Although the book gives particular attention to Singapore's attempts to deal with these issues, the story extends into Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. All of these countries have significant Muslim populations, and recent violent events have affected the business environment, tourism, and the region's tradition of religious tolerance. The author draws on personal interviews with experts in the field as well as key political and religious figures in Singapore, Malaysia, and Indonesia, including Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, Minister for Muslim Affairs Jaacoub Ibrahim, and expelled Muslim dissident Zulfikar Mohamad Sharif. Millard examines the Bali bombing, Malaysia's conservative Islamic party PAS, the Malaysian province of Kelantan which is a Muslim political hotbed, Abu Saayaf of the Philippines, and Fateha.com and the use of the Internet. He also provides a glimpse of how Singapore, the region's most developed nation, has engineered its society in order to impose a degree of racial and religious tolerance.
