Book excerpt: Dive into this fun steampunk fantasy featuring quirky characters, snappy banter, and set in a world that's a cross between Victorian London and the tropics. Blackmail an assassin? Who would do such a thing? Someone pretty desperate, that’s who. Which is exactly the position Rory finds herself in. As a scrawny, dreadlocked pickpocket who grew up on the street, life hasn’t given her a ton of options. On top of which, her partner in crime has screwed her over for all her money, so she can no longer pay for the sword master who was supposed to train her—her ticket to a new life. She’s not prepared to give up on her dream of becoming a great sword fighter, though. Which is why when she stumbles across an assassin’s secret, she immediately sniffs an opportunity. Blackmail can be a pretty effective strategy, after all. If he trains her, she’ll keep her mouth shut. The risks in blackmailing an assassin are pretty high, but if she can pull it off, she might finally be able to realise her dream. That is until she realises that the assassin’s she’s blackmailing is nothing like what she thought, and she’s landed herself into far more trouble than she bargained for. Book excerpt: A New York Times Best New Historical Novel of 2021 "Potent... fast-paced..." - The New York Times Book Review "Wonderfully imagined and wonderfully written . . . Superb!" -- Lee Child Part Wolf Hall, part The Name of the Rose, a riveting new literary thriller set in Restoration London, with a cast of real historic figures, set against the actual historic events and intrigues of the returned king and his court … The City of London, 1678. New Year’s Day. Twelve years have passed since the Great Fire ripped through the City. Eighteen since the fall of Oliver Cromwell and the restoration of a King. London is gripped by hysteria, and rumors of Catholic plots and sinister foreign assassins abound. When the body of a young boy drained of his blood is discovered on the snowy bank of the Fleet River, Robert Hooke, the Curator of Experiments at the just-formed Royal Society for Improving Natural Knowledge, and his assistant Harry Hunt, are called in to explain such a ghastly finding—and whether it's part of a plot against the king. They soon learn it is not the first bloodless boy to have been discovered. Meanwhile, that same morning Henry Oldenburg, the Secretary of the Royal Society, blows his brains out, and a disgraced Earl is released from the Tower of London, bent on revenge against the King, Charles II. Wary of the political hornet’s nest they are walking into – and using scientific evidence rather than paranoia in their pursuit of truth – Hooke and Hunt must discover why the boy was murdered, and why his blood was taken. The Bloodless Boy is an absorbing literary thriller that introduces two new indelible heroes to historical crime fiction. It is also a powerfully atmospheric recreation of the darkest corners of Restoration London, where the Court and the underworld seem to merge, even as the light of scientific inquiry is starting to emerge …

Download or read book The Irish Assassins written by Julie Kavanagh and published by Grove Atlantic. This book was released on 2021-08-03 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A brilliant true crime account of the assassinations that altered the course of Irish history from the “compulsively readable” writer (The Guardian). One sunlit evening, May 6, 1882, Lord Frederick Cavendish and Thomas Burke, Chief Secretary and Undersecretary for Ireland, were ambushed and stabbed to death while strolling through Phoenix Park in Dublin. The murders were funded by American supporters of Irish independence and carried out by the Invincibles, a militant faction of republicans armed with specially made surgeon’s blades. They put an end to the new spirit of goodwill that had been burgeoning between British Prime Minister William Gladstone and Ireland’s leader Charles Stewart Parnell as the men forged a secret pact to achieve peace and independence in Ireland—with the newly appointed Cavendish, Gladstone’s protégé, to play an instrumental role in helping to do so. In a story that spans Donegal, Dublin, London, Paris, New York, Cannes, and Cape Town, Julie Kavanagh thrillingly traces the crucial events that came before and after the murders. From the adulterous affair that caused Parnell’s downfall; to Queen Victoria’s prurient obsession with the assassinations; to the investigation spearheaded by Superintendent John Mallon, also known as the “Irish Sherlock Holmes,” culminating in the eventual betrayal and clandestine escape of leading Invincible James Carey and his murder on the high seas, The Irish Assassins brings us intimately into this fascinating story that shaped Irish politics and engulfed an Empire. Praise for Julie Kavanagh’s Nureyev: The Life “Easily the best biography of the year.” —The Philadelphia Inquirer “The definitive biography of ballet’s greatest star whose ego was as supersized as his talent.” —Tina Brown, award-winning journalist and author

Buy The Viper and the Urchin and get swept away in the adventure today! INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR Q - So, what makes the Bloodless Assassin series special? A - It's a mix of things really. When I started writing The Viper and the Urchin, I wanted to create something that I'd want to read. My top picks are usually novels that feature quirky characters with humour to them, anything steampunk or fantasy, and I do love a good mystery. The Viper and the Urchin is a great mix of all these things. It's a fun and easy read with a darker mystery threading throughout the story. Q - The setting is a little unusual for steampunk. A - Yes. One of the things I love about fantasy is being whisked away to a completely new and unknown world, and I wanted to recreate that feeling. So I've kept the aesthetic and technology of steampunk, but set my story in an exciting tropical world that's very different from what readers will have encountered before. My world is also at the start of its development of steam technology, so the city of Damsport is very much a mix of old and new. Q -Will there be more books in the series? A - Absolutely! I'm working on Book 2 now and I have a few more in the works. You can get notified first when a new book comes out by going here: bit.ly/CJeanjeanNewReleases (just paste into your browser. Book Surprise Kill Vanish

  • Pages : 560 pages

Download or read book Surprise Kill Vanish written by Annie Jacobsen and published by Little, Brown. This book was released on 2019-05-14 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen, the untold USA Today bestselling story of the CIA's secret paramilitary units. Surprise . . . your target. Kill . . . your enemy. Vanish . . . without a trace. When diplomacy fails, and war is unwise, the president calls on the CIA's Special Activities Division, a highly-classified branch of the CIA and the most effective, black operations force in the world. Originally known as the president's guerrilla warfare corps, SAD conducts risky and ruthless operations that have evolved over time to defend America from its enemies. Almost every American president since World War II has asked the CIA to conduct sabotage, subversion and, yes, assassination. With unprecedented access to forty-two men and women who proudly and secretly worked on CIA covert operations from the dawn of the Cold War to the present day, along with declassified documents and deep historical research, Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen unveils -- like never before -- a complex world of individuals working in treacherous environments populated with killers, connivers, and saboteurs. Despite Hollywood notions of off-book operations and external secret hires, covert action is actually one piece in a colossal foreign policy machine. Written with the pacing of a thriller, Surprise, Kill, Vanish brings to vivid life the sheer pandemonium and chaos, as well as the unforgettable human will to survive and the intellectual challenge of not giving up hope that define paramilitary and intelligence work. Jacobsen's exclusive interviews -- with members of the CIA's Senior Intelligence Service (equivalent to the Pentagon's generals), its counterterrorism chiefs, targeting officers, and Special Activities Division's Ground Branch operators who conduct today's close-quarters killing operations around the world -- reveal, for the first time, the enormity of this shocking, controversial, and morally complex terrain. Is the CIA's paramilitary army America's weaponized strength, or a liability to its principled standing in the world? Every operation reported in this book, however unsettling, is legal.

Book excerpt: When I was a child I tried a whole host of things and I always had the full support of my mother, Carmel Armstrong, and she told me that I could do anything that I put my mind to and I believed her and not only did I believe her, but I have also tried to pass this same message on to others as often as I could and especially to children because there's no greater gift that a human being can give to another than the gift of encouragement. And because of the wonderful and magnificent gift of encouragement, I am currently living my dream of being a published author and I have wanted this title ever since I watched my mother sit in front of her typewriter while filling the pages with words and in case you haven't guessed by now my mother was also a writer. The Playground is a gritty Gangster Novel that takes you on a journey through the lives of Sophia and David Bloom; mother and son who are forced to move to a Housing Project that's located on the Eastside of South Central Los Angeles after a family tragedy robs them of their financial well being. And their move takes place just before the rise of Crack Cocaine and before the decline of Heroin and it puts them in direct contact with dirty Cops, F.B.I. Agents, C.I.A. Operatives, Gangsters, Drug Dealers, White Supremacists, Thieving dope fiends of the worst kind, Revolutionaries or Domestic Terrorists if you prefer, and other shady representatives of the United States Government. But that's just the beginning because you see there's an unbelievable twist to the story that you won't believe. And I invite you to learn who Damu is and who Warlock is.

The Malazan Empire simmers with discontent, bled dry by interminable warfare, bitter infighting and bloody confrontations with the formidable Anomander Rake and his Tiste Andii, ancient and implacable sorcerers. Even the imperial legions, long inured to the bloodshed, yearn for some respite. Yet Empress Laseen's rule remains absolute, enforced by her dread Claw assassins. For Sergeant Whiskeyjack and his squad of Bridgeburners, and for Tattersail, surviving cadre mage of the Second Legion, the aftermath of the siege of Pale should have been a time to mourn the many dead. But Darujhistan, last of the Free Cities of Genabackis, yet holds out. It is to this ancient citadel that Laseen turns her predatory gaze. However, it would appear that the Empire is not alone in this great game. Sinister, shadowbound forces are gathering as the gods themselves prepare to play their hand... Conceived and written on a panoramic scale, Gardens of the Moon is epic fantasy of the highest order--an enthralling adventure by an outstanding new voice. Book excerpt: The final book in the Razor's Edge Chronicles! How did I wind up chained with silver and pumped full of drugs to keep me unconscious? I was under the impression that there was no crisis on the horizon, and that Sarroch and I were therefore free to go on our first proper date. Except that I’m clearly a glutton for punishment, because I decide that I should talk to Yue, to clear the air. So even though it goes against every survival instinct, I set up a meeting with her. Surprisingly, Yue doesn’t end up being the biggest problem I face, despite her very clear desire to rid the world of me. The masked kidnappers who inject us both with drugs and silver are clearly far more dangerous. Which is how I find myself groggy, chained up, with no idea of where I am, or who kidnapped us and why. Now, not only do I need to find a way to get out of this mess, but I need to do it while collaborating with Yue. Which is a bit like trying to hug a rabid dog while hoping not to get bitten. Yue’s still out there, and more to the point she’s not happy with how little progress I’ve made on our deal regarding Sarroch. Which means a significant decrease in the value of my life. Staying home is therefore the smart thing to do. But all the same, a friend in trouble is a friend in trouble, and no one but me seems to care what’s going on with Ilmu. With my limited magic there’s only so much I can do, but I manage to get my hands on magical incense that will allow me to see her. That is until another supernatural creature appears in the smoke and drags me into whatever space Ilmu is trapped in. And just like that, my problems with Yue look pretty insignificant.
