Download or read book Blood from the Sky written by Adam Jortner and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the decades following the Revolution, the supernatural exploded across the American landscape—fabulous reports of healings, exorcisms, magic, and angels crossed the nation. Under First Amendment protections, new sects based on such miracles proliferated. At the same time, Enlightenment philosophers and American founders explicitly denied the possibility of supernatural events, dismissing them as deliberate falsehoods—and, therefore, efforts to suborn the state. Many feared that belief in the supernatural itself was a danger to democracy. In this way, miracles became a political problem and prompted violent responses in the religious communities of Prophetstown, Turtle Creek, and Nauvoo. In Blood from the Sky, Adam Jortner argues that the astonishing breadth and extent of American miracles and supernaturalism following independence derived from Enlightenment ideas about proof and sensory evidence, offering a chance at certain belief in an uncertain religious climate. Jortner breaks new ground in explaining the rise of radical religion in antebellum America, revisiting questions of disenchantment, modernity, and religious belief in a history of astounding events that—as early Americans would have said—needed to be seen to be believed.

Download or read book The matter of miracles written by Helen Hills and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 2021-02-02 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book investigates baroque architecture through the lens of San Gennaro’s miraculously liquefying blood in Naples. This vantage point allows a bracing and thoroughly original rethink of the power of baroque relics and reliquaries. It shows how a focus on miracles produces original interpretations of architecture, sanctity and place which will engage architectural historians everywhere. The matter of the baroque miracle extends into a rigorous engagement with natural history, telluric philosophy, new materialism, theory and philosophy. The study will transform our understanding of baroque art and architecture, sanctity and Naples. Bristling with new archival materials and historical insights, this study lifts the baroque from its previous marginalisation to engage fiercely with materiality and potentiality and thus unleash baroque art and architecture as productive and transformational.

Download or read book Miracles written by Charles Raymond Dillon and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-11 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the stories in this book are outside the scope of our everyday experience, many unbelievable, yet many have been validated by observers as being authentic. There are stories of weeping and mobile statues, incorruptible flesh of the dead, and spontaneous combustion of human bodies. Other stories concern ecstasy, levitation, visions, healing, and other mysterious events. The concept of miracles have been attacked by rationalist philosophers who argue that they would be a violation of the common course of nature, thus the events could not happen. Saint Augustine answered such critics by defining miracles as being events that are unknown in nature, not as something opposed to it. This book contains a collection of wondrous events that have been reported at have occurred at different times, in diverse places, and among all peoples of the world. These wonderful events may be called miracles, frauds, coincidences, or what ever you may choose. Many have been investigated and determined to have been fraud. The intent is to present the information, and to let you decide if they are real miracles or not.
