Excerpt: ...you by the living God not to disregard me in this great time of need. And I expect thee most of all, my holy Peter, to be mindful of what my father did for thee when he was doorkeeper.' Then indeed Peter asked him, and said, 'Wast thou with thy father when he vindicated me, so that they did not apprehend me?' And again the chief said, 'I beseech you all not to disregard me.' And then Saint Peter said unto him, 'It is not, indeed, in my power, nor in that of any of us to help thee, except thou wilt believe in Jesus Christ, that he is the Son of the living God, and arose from the dead. But if thou believest not that he is the Son of God, thou shalt not be set down upon the earth. But we know that the enemy of mankind hath blinded your hearts, lest you should believe that Christ were true God, and you should be saved by him. But go now, indeed, and kiss this bier, and say to this corpse that thou believest in God the Father, and in Mary, for she bore Jesus Christ.' Then the leader of the priests blessed Mary with his tongue, in the Hebrew language, glorifyingly. And none of them, in the meanwhile, raised the bier. And then, after a respite, he again blessed the body of Mary, by the witness of the books of Moses and by very numerous scriptures; and he declared, from them all, that Mary was the temple of the living God. Then the apostles were greatly astonished at him and said unto him, 'Whence came to him these wonderful speeches?' Then said Peter, 'Streteh forth thy hand, and say that thou believest on the name of our Saviour Christ, with all thy heart, then shall thy hands become restored and be as they were before.' And immediately it came to pass that he believed in his heart; and again Peter spake to him, 'Arise now and receive this...

Download or read book Blickling Homilies written by Richard J. Kelly and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2010-07-15 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Blickling Homilies date from the end of the tenth century and form one of the earliest extant collections of English vernacular homiletic writings. The homiletic texts survive in a composite codex consisting of Municipal Entries for the Council of Lincoln (14th - 17th century), a Calendar (mid 15th century), Gospel Oaths (early 14th century), and the eighteen homiletic texts that are based on the yearly liturgical cycle. The Blickling Homilies are an important literary milestone in the early evolution of the English prose. The manuscript, in the collection of William H. Scheide housed in Princeton University Library (MS. 71, s.x/xi), was published in facsimile by Rudolph Willard in 1960 as Volume 10 of Early English Manuscripts in Facsimile, Copenhagen. It is the only Anglo-Saxon MS still in private ownership, and together with The Blickling Psalter are the only two Anglo-Saxon MSS in the Americas. The only previous edition of The Blickling Homilies is by Richard Morris, published in three volumes in 1874, 1876, & 1880 (reprinted as one volume in 1967). This new edition makes a number of corrections where Morris's manuscript reading is in error. The English translations are modernized and made more accurate. The original text and facing-page translation have been formatted into paragraphs, which are hoped to further and aid comprehension. Finally, the text and translation are accompanied by a general introduction, textual notes on each homiletic text, tables and charts, and a select bibliography.

Book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Volume 1 The Medieval Period Second Edition

Download or read book The Broadview Anthology of British Literature Volume 1 The Medieval Period Second Edition written by Joseph Black and published by Broadview Press. This book was released on 2009-08-21 with total page 921 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In all six of its volumes The Broadview Anthology of British Literature presents British literature in a truly distinctive light. Fully grounded in sound literary and historical scholarship, the anthology takes a fresh approach to many canonical authors, and includes a wide selection of work by lesser-known writers. The anthology also provides wide-ranging coverage of the worldwide connections of British literature, and it pays attention throughout to issues of race, gender, class, and sexual orientation. It includes comprehensive introductions to each period, providing in each case an overview of the historical and cultural as well as the literary background. It features accessible and engaging headnotes for all authors, extensive explanatory annotations throughout, and an unparalleled number of illustrations and contextual materials, offering additional perspectives both on individual texts and on larger social and cultural developments. Innovative, authoritative, and comprehensive, The Broadview Anthology of British Literature embodies a consistently fresh approach to the study of literature and literary history. The second edition of volume one of The Broadview Anthology of British Literature includes considerably more of Langland's Pier’s Plowman than appears in the first edition, and includes for the first time the work of John Gower. Also new to the bound book component of the anthology is the York Crucifixion Play, and additional work by Chaucer. With this volume as with the others, material continues to be added on an ongoing basis to the website component of the anthology.

Book The Apocalyptic Year 1000

  • Author : Richard Landes
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2003-06-05
  • ISBN : 0195354737
  • Pages : 377 pages

Download or read book The Apocalyptic Year 1000 written by Richard Landes and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2003-06-05 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book challenge prevailing views on the way in which apocalyptic concerns contributed to larger processes of social change at the first millennium. Several basic questions unify the essays: What chronological and theological assumptions underlay apocalyptic and millennial speculations around the Year 1000? How broadly disseminated were those speculations? Can we speak of a mentality of apocalyptic hopes and anxieties on the eve of the millennium? If so, how did authorities respond to or even contribute to the formation of this mentality? What were the social ramifications of apocalyptic hopes and anxieties, and of any efforts to suppress or redirect the more radical impulses that bred them? How did contemporaries conceptualize and then historicize the passing of the millennial date of 1000? Including the work of British, French, German, Dutch, and American scholars, this book will be the definitive resource on this fascinating topic, and should at the same time provoke new interest in and debate on the nature and causes of social change in early medieval Europe.

Book A History of Preaching Volume 1

Download or read book A History of Preaching Volume 1 written by Rev. O.C. Edwards JR. and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2016-04-25 with total page 824 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A History of Preaching brings together narrative history and primary sources to provide the most comprehensive guide available to the story of the church's ministry of proclamation. Bringing together an impressive array of familiar and lesser-known figures, Edwards paints a detailed, compelling picture of what it has meant to preach the gospel. Pastors, scholars, and students of homiletics will find here many opportunities to enrich their understanding and practice of preaching. Volume 1 contains Edwards's magisterial retelling of the story of Christian preaching's development from its Hellenistic and Jewish roots in the New Testament, through the late-twentieth century's discontent with outdated forms and emphasis on new modes of preaching such as narrative. Along the way the author introduces us to the complexities and contributions of preachers, both with whom we are already acquainted, and to whom we will be introduced here for the first time. Origen, Chrysostom, Augustine, Bernard, Aquinas, Luther, Calvin, Wesley, Edwards, Rauschenbusch, Barth; all of their distinctive contributions receive careful attention. Yet lesser-known figures and developments also appear, from the ninth-century reform of preaching championed by Hrabanus Maurus, to the reference books developed in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries by the mendicant orders to assist their members' preaching, to Howell Harris and Daniel Rowlands, preachers of the eighteenth-century Welsh revival, to Helen Kenyon, speaking as a layperson at the 1950 Yale Beecher lectures about the view of preaching from the pew. Volume 2, available separately as 9781501833786, contains primary source material on preaching drawn from the entire scope of the church's twenty centuries. The author has written an introduction to each selection, placing it in its historical context and pointing to its particular contribution. Each chapter in Volume 2 is geared to its companion chapter in Volume 1's narrative history. Ecumenical in scope, fair-minded in presentation, appreciative of the contributions that all the branches of the church have made to the story of what it means to develop, deliver, and listen to a sermon, A History of Preaching will be the definitive resource for anyone who wishes to preach or to understand preaching's role in living out the gospel. "...'This work is expected to be the standard text on preaching for the next 30 years,' says Ann K. Riggs, who staffs the NCC's Faith and Order Commission. Author Edwards, former professor of preaching at Seabury-Western Theological Seminary, is co-moderator of the commission, which studies church-uniting and church-dividing issues. 'A History of Preaching is ecumenical in scope and will be relevant in all our churches; we all participate in this field,' says Riggs...." from EcuLink, Number 65, Winter 2004-2005 published by the National Council of Churches
