Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sabrina McDonald's book The Blessings of Loneliness suggests that those who experience loneliness don't need to pursue marriage as the ultimate answer to their hurt, but they need to embrace the blessings that come through the pain. Having dealt with loneliness as a single woman and again as a widow for more than three years, McDonald proposes that loneliness itself is not a blessing, but the fruit that comes through it is. So many Christians forget that God calls His people to the low places. He calls us to be humble and meek. He even calls us to give up everything to follow Christ. None of these come easily, and they often require pain. But we've been promised recognition, grace, inheritance, and everlasting life in return. The same is true for the pain that comes through loneliness. Feelings of rejection and relational hurt force a person to die to his own desires, reach out to others, and find intimacy in Christ, but in return, God has promised a life filled with blessings if we reach within the pain and put our trust in Him. In The Blessings of Loneliness, McDonald encourages singles to see marriage as a calling, not a cure. She also encourages them to see singleness as a calling, and to take advantage of their time in order to reach others with the love of Christ. Throughout the book, McDonald uses her own experience and testimonies of others to prove that loneliness can bring about the abundant life. She uses scripture to back up her words of inspiration and wisdom, and each chapter contains practical steps that lead the lonely single down the path of a deeper relationship with Christ. Many men and women struggling with loneliness have found hope through this message. Here are a few personal testimonies: "You don't know what a blessing this has been. It has been such a message of confirmation and of comfort! Earlier this year, my Dad told me to continue being busy for God. Don't worry about timetables and how things look with regards to not being sent a mate.... Isn't it awesome to realize that God is more than enough for you? I just loved your words and I could write on and on...just wanted you to know that your testimony has blessed me and so many others!" "Thank you for this testimony. I am single now after separation from my husband. Reading your story is very comforting to me." "Thank you for that encouraging word. I'm a turning-27-single myself and I could identify with all the struggles you went through. Most of my friends can also relate to your valley experiences as a single. Praise God for the love and assurance of His presence every day. Although loneliness is a physical reality, when a woman chooses to run to the even more real presence of God by faith, she'll learn to embrace the joys and challenges of single-blessedness. I realize I am only beginning this journey of discovering these, and I thank God that he's my guide and fellow sojourner. I hope you'll continue to minister to singles and point them to Jesus!" "I just read The Blessings of Loneliness, and I appreciate your sharing such profound words of wisdom. I have been in the season of singleness for what seems like an eternity. While seeking God to satisfy the desire for a mate, I too discovered His love for me, and now I can't stop talking about Him. God bless you in your endeavors." The Blessings of Loneliness is a message of hope and healing for singles in any stage of life. The book is an easy short read with many stories that will draw the interest of a variety of readership. It's guaranteed to inspire anyone who struggles with feeling alone.

Book excerpt: "To be human is to be lonely." When his seventy-something spiritual director Friar Ugo spoke these words in a voice cracking with age, Jason Gaboury felt a deep sense of their truth. To the observer, Jason, a campus minister, active church member, and father with a young family, might not have seemed lonely. But it's how he felt. He has wrestled with loneliness ever since he can remember, perhaps before he can remember . . . through childhood, college, and into adulthood. When Friar Ugo challenged him to see loneliness as a context for friendship with God, things began to change. In these pages God invites you to stop and wait with him in your own moments of isolation and anxiety. It's an invitation into a journey through loneliness into a deeper life with God.

Download or read book A Biography of Loneliness written by Fay Bound Alberti and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite 21st-century fears of an 'epidemic' of loneliness, its history has been sorely neglected. A Biography of Loneliness offers a radically new interpretation of loneliness as an emotional language and experience. Using letters and diaries, philosophical tracts, political discussions, and medical literature from the eighteenth century to the present, historian of the emotions Fay Bound Alberti argues that loneliness is not an ahistorical, universal phenomenon. It is, in fact, a modern emotion: before 1800, its language did not exist. And where loneliness is identified, it is not always bad, but a complex emotional state that differs according to class, gender, ethnicity and experience. Looking at informative case studies such as Sylvia Plath, Queen Victoria, and Virginia Woolf, A Biography of Loneliness charts the emergence of loneliness as a modern and embodied emotional state.

Book The Loneliness Epidemic

Download or read book The Loneliness Epidemic written by Susan Mettes and published by Brazos Press. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What makes people lonely? And how can Christian communities better minister to the lonely? In The Loneliness Epidemic, behavioral scientist and researcher Susan Mettes explores those questions and more. Guided by current research from Barna Group, Mettes illustrates the profound physical, emotional, and social toll of loneliness in the United States. Surprisingly, her research shows that it is not the oldest Americans but the youngest adults who are loneliest and that social media can actually play a positive role in alleviating loneliness. Mettes highlights the role that belonging, friendship, closeness, and expectations play in preventing it. She also offers meaningful ways the church can minister to lonely people, going far beyond simplistic solutions--like helping them meet new people--to addressing their inner lives and the God who understands them. With practical and highly applicable tips, this book is an invaluable tool for anyone--ministry leaders, parents, friends--trying to help someone who feels alone. Readers will emerge better able to deal with their own loneliness and to help alleviate the loneliness of others. Foreword by Barna Group president David Kinnaman.

Book A History of Solitude

    Book Details:
  • Author : David Vincent
  • Publisher : John Wiley & Sons
  • Release : 2020-05-06
  • ISBN : 1509536604
  • Pages : 264 pages

Download or read book A History of Solitude written by David Vincent and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solitude has always had an ambivalent status: the capacity to enjoy being alone can make sociability bearable, but those predisposed to solitude are often viewed with suspicion or pity. Drawing on a wide array of literary and historical sources, David Vincent explores how people have conducted themselves in the absence of company over the last three centuries. He argues that the ambivalent nature of solitude became a prominent concern in the modern era. For intellectuals in the romantic age, solitude gave respite to citizens living in ever more complex modern societies. But while the search for solitude was seen as a symptom of modern life, it was also viewed as a dangerous pathology: a perceived renunciation of the world, which could lead to psychological disorder and anti-social behaviour. Vincent explores the successive attempts of religious authorities and political institutions to manage solitude, taking readers from the monastery to the prisoner’s cell, and explains how western society’s increasing secularism, urbanization and prosperity led to the development of new solitary pastimes at the same time as it made traditional forms of solitary communion, with God and with a pristine nature, impossible. At the dawn of the digital age, solitude has taken on new meanings, as physical isolation and intense sociability have become possible as never before. With the advent of a so-called loneliness epidemic, a proper historical understanding of the natural human desire to disengage from the world is more important than ever. The first full-length account of its subject, A History of Solitude will appeal to a wide general readership.

Book Loneliness as a Way of Life

Download or read book Loneliness as a Way of Life written by Thomas Dumm and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-01 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “What does it mean to be lonely?” Thomas Dumm asks. His inquiry, documented in this book, takes us beyond social circumstances and into the deeper forces that shape our very existence as modern individuals. The modern individual, Dumm suggests, is fundamentally a lonely self. Through reflections on philosophy, political theory, literature, and tragic drama, he proceeds to illuminate a hidden dimension of the human condition. His book shows how loneliness shapes the contemporary division between public and private, our inability to live with each other honestly and in comity, the estranged forms that our intimate relationships assume, and the weakness of our common bonds. A reading of the relationship between Cordelia and her father in Shakespeare’s King Lear points to the most basic dynamic of modern loneliness—how it is a response to the problem of the “missing mother.” Dumm goes on to explore the most important dimensions of lonely experience—Being, Having, Loving, and Grieving. As the book unfolds, he juxtaposes new interpretations of iconic cultural texts—Moby-Dick, Death of a Salesman, the film Paris, Texas, Emerson’s “Experience,” to name a few—with his own experiences of loneliness, as a son, as a father, and as a grieving husband and widower. Written with deceptive simplicity, Loneliness as a Way of Life is something rare—an intellectual study that is passionately personal. It challenges us, not to overcome our loneliness, but to learn how to re-inhabit it in a better way. To fail to do so, this book reveals, will only intensify the power that it holds over us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Where do I begin with this review? I think I should take my sisters advice and repeat what she often tells me: If I cant say amen, just say ouch. Keeping that in mind, Im over here saying ouch because author Toni L. Wortherly is on my toe stomping pretty hard with this petite but powerful book. As a single Christian woman combating some of the issues of loneliness and frustration associated with living a single life, this book speaks volumes to me. There is nothing like reading what youre going through to let the reader know they are not alone on this journey. As Ive pledged my life to following the tenants of my faith, its good to have confirmation, in the form of a book, which I can reference from time to time. Ill admit that Im not crazy about the title; I dont like to be referred to as prey or as the hunted. The Word of God says: He that finds a wife, finds a good thing so a loose translation would mean that I am prey. I would hope that my mate wouldnt refer to me in this manner. The translation would also imply that Im weak or defenseless; I feel that Im a strong vessel, who patiently awaits capture. Pray While Youre Prey is a great read for single women. Those of us who have the desire to be spiritually grounded in all that we do, can draw strength from the scripture, interpretation and study questions found at the end of each chapter. This is a book to share with your entire cadre of single sister friends as we journey down the path to closeness with God and the quest to be a virtuous woman and wife.
