Book excerpt: The classic Harmony of the Gospels by J. W. McGarvey and Philip Y. Pendleton with interspersed comments. Attractively re-typeset, this enduring work is a valuable resource to modern Bible students. "In most commentaries a fifth or sixth of the space is taken up in drawing distinctions between the texts of the four Gospels, while in this work these distinctions are placed before the reader's eye, where he can see them for himself at a glance. Moreover, in other commentaries, which give the text, another sixth or seventh of the work is taken up in reprinting in the notes that portion of the text concerning which the commentator wishes to speak. Our interjected method avoids all this needless repetition, and makes it possible for us to present the comment with the least preliminary verbiage or introductory setting. Time is also saved because the reader does not have to look back and forth from the text at the top to the comment at the bottom of the page. Again, other commentaries lose a large amount of space by using the King James text. Those which preceded the revision waste space correcting the translation and modernizing its English: those published since the revision suffer a similar waste by drawing endless comparisons between the two texts. By choosing the American revision as the basis for our work, we have a text which needs but little explanation or apology, and we are thereby enabled to employ the reader's time and strength to his best advantage." --Excerpted from the Introduction

Book excerpt: The Gospelis a harmony in the truest sense of the word, a blending of the four gospels into one narrative. It is a chronological arrangement of the events that took place during the earthly life and ministry of Jesus Christ, from birth to death on the cross and resurrection, as recorded by the four saints. It is word for word, unchanged from the original text of the Authorized King James Version of the holy bible and arranged in the familiar two column format. When same events are recorded in two or more versions of the gospel, the most descriptive one has been utilized. Parallel verses that are most descriptive have been taken from another version and blended into the chosen narrative for the most comprehensive account possible. All gospel harmonies are a matter of interpretation. No two can be found that are in complete agreement as to the chronological order of events. This harmony challenges some centuries old and generally accepted placements. These, contrary to traditional placements, answer many long debated questions, among others: was Jesus rejected at Nazareth before or after the first Passover; where and when did Jesus begin his public ministry; what was the duration of his ministry; was John 5:1, the unnamed feast of the Jews, Passover; at what point chronologically did Jesus go to Jerusalem for this feast; did the second cleansing of the temple occur on Sunday or Monday; was Wednesday of Holy Week a non-event day? The journey of Jesus during the last six months has been described as the most perplexing question in harmonistic study. In this harmony the combination of Luke and John during this period leaves nothing to be questioned. A separate explanatory note and chronological arrangement of the last six months of gospel history has been included for special study. The Gospelis a book for all ages, denominational persuasion, and level of chronological study and understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 Foreword INDIES Book of the Year Award Finalists - Multicultural "I am a man torn in two. And the gospel I inherited is divided." Jonathan Wilson-Hartgrove grew up in the Bible Belt in the American South as a faithful church-going Christian. But he gradually came to realize that the gospel his Christianity proclaimed was not good news for everybody. The same Christianity that sang, "Amazing grace, how sweet the sound" also perpetuated racial injustice and white supremacy in the name of Jesus. His Christianity, he discovered, was the religion of the slaveholder. Just as Reconstruction after the Civil War worked to repair a desperately broken society, our compromised Christianity requires a spiritual reconstruction that undoes the injustices of the past. Wilson-Hartgrove traces his journey from the religion of the slaveholder to the Christianity of Christ. Reconstructing the gospel requires facing the pain of the past and present, from racial blindness to systemic abuses of power. Grappling seriously with troubling history and theology, Wilson-Hartgrove recovers the subversiveness of the gospel that sustained the church through centuries of slavery and oppression, from the civil rights era to the Black Lives Matter movement and beyond. When the gospel is reconstructed, freedom rings both for individuals and for society as a whole. Discover how Jesus continues to save us from ourselves and each other, to repair the breach and heal our land.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Resonate series recovers the ancient wisdom of Scripture and helps us understand how it resonates with our complex world. The stories and insights of each book of the Bible are brought into conversation with contemporary voices of hope and lament--the cultural messages we interact with on a daily basis. The Scriptures become a meeting ground where God speaks to the pressing concerns of our day, and we are confronted in turn with a fresh experience of God's truth. In this journey through the Gospel of John, Paul Louis Metzger wrestles with the question of what happens when God, who is love, comes to town and takes up residence among us. For some this new neighbor love is welcome; for others, unusual; for still others, suspect--even dangerous. We learn from John's Gospel what it means to be called friends and lovers of God, what it means to put love to death and what it means for love to rise again in our midst and in our lives.
