Book Feeling Trapped

Download or read book Feeling Trapped written by James Ptacek and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between class and intimate violence against women is much misunderstood. While many studies of intimate violence focus on poor and working-class women, few examine the issue comparatively in terms of class privilege and class disadvantage. James Ptacek draws on in-depth interviews with sixty women from wealthy, professional, working-class, and poor communities to investigate how social class shapes both women's experiences of violence and the responses of their communities to this violence. Ptacek's framing of women's victimization as "social entrapment" links private violence to public responses and connects social inequalities to the dilemmas that women face.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Any pattern of behavior in which one partner abuses the other physically, emotionally, psychologically, or financially is considered domestic violence. It has many faces and affects people of all sexes, ages, and socioeconomic statuses. As a pervasive and deplorable social problem, domestic violence has devastating effects on its victims and their loved ones. The following are examples of frequent forms of domestic violence: - The use of physical force against or for the purpose of controlling a partner is an example of physical violence. Physical violence can take the shape of any of the following actions: hitting, slapping, punching, kicking, choking, etc. - One form of abuse is known as "emotional or psychological abuse," and it entails exerting control over a partner's feelings and thoughts. Abusive behavior can take many forms, such as relentless criticism, insults, humiliation, threats, intimidation, isolation, and gaslighting (which causes the victim to question their own view of reality). - When one partner pressures or intimidates another into sexual activity against their will, this is sexual abuse. Any sexual act that is not mutually agreed upon is included in this category. - Economic or financial abuse occurs when one spouse uses their access to or use of money resources to exert dominance and control over the other. Money can be withheld, the victim's career or education might be sabotaged, and the victim can be saddled with debt. - Abuse in the digital or cyber realm refers to the use of electronic devices for the sake of power and control or harassment of a relationship. Some examples of this kind of behavior are eavesdropping on conversations and tracking where people go online or on their phones, and cyberbullying. - The term "stalking" refers to a set of unwelcome and intrusive actions taken with the intent to threaten, harass, or intimidate a partner. This can be done in a variety of ways, such as by following them, calling them repeatedly, or sending them unwelcome texts. - Some abusers will try to control and manipulate their victims by appealing to their religious or spiritual beliefs. Be aware that domestic violence can take many forms and might worsen over time. Injuries, trauma, anxiety, sadness, and low self-esteem are just some of the physical and psychological consequences that victims of domestic violence often endure. Domestic abuse is a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Many services exist to help victims of domestic violence, such as crisis lines, shelters, and advocacy groups. Always put your own well-being and safety first.

Book Battle Cries

  • Author : Hillary Potter
  • Publisher : NYU Press
  • Release : 2008-11-01
  • ISBN : 0814767710
  • Pages : 287 pages

Download or read book Battle Cries written by Hillary Potter and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2008-11-01 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contrary to the stereotype of the “strong Black woman,” African American women are more plagued by domestic violence than any other racial group in the United States. In fact, African American women experience intimate partner violence at a rate 35% higher than white women and about two and a half times more than women of other races and ethnicities. This common portrayal can hinder black women seeking help and support simply because those on the outside don't think help is needed. Yet, as Hillary Potter argues in Battle Cries: Black Women and Intimate Partner Abuse, this stereotype often helps these African American women to resist and to verbally and physically retaliate against their abusers. Thanks to this generalization, Potter observes, black women are less inclined to label themselves as “victims” and more inclined to fight back. Battle Cries is an eye-opening examination of African American women's experiences with intimate partner abuse, the methods used to contend with abusive mates, and the immediate and enduring consequences resulting from the maltreatment. Based on intensive interviews with 40 African American women abused by their male partners, Potter's analysis takes into account variations in their experiences based on socioeconomic class, education level, and age, and discusses the common abuses and perceptions they share. Combining her remarkable findings with black feminist thought and critical race theory, Potter offers a unique and significant window through which we can better understand this understudied though rampant social problem.
