Book Rolling Down Black Stockings

Download or read book Rolling Down Black Stockings written by Esther Royer Ayers and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rolling Down Black Stockings is a personal recollection of Esther Royer Ayers's youth spent in a highly restrictive and confined religious community. Her story is as much a search for identity and a longing for a mother's love as it is a tale about a totalitarian culture that led to her departure from the Old Order Mennonite religion. This poignant story is told in three books: book 1 describes her youth in a farm community on the outskirts of Columbiana, Ohio; book 2 follows the struggles of Ayers as she tries to fit in with another culture after leaving the church when her family moves to Akron, Ohio; and book 3 discusses the history and cultural dynamics of the religion. Ayers recounts how the Old Order Mennonite Church came into existence. Her personal account begins when she was eight years old, watching as her mother took care of her sick father. With intel-ligence and insight, Ayers describes how her family coped with the burden of not having enough income, which meant that the children were expected to work instead of getting an education. her Mennonite community, Ayers relates her difficulties trying to fit in at the public school and how she and her siblings were required to fall classes so that they would be expelled. It concludes with reflections on what all this meant to her. A rare and moving memoir, Rolling Down Black Stockings is also a valuable piece of social history that will appeal to historians as well as those interested in separatist communities and women's studies.

He's served five and a half years abroad in the Army. She was eight when he left and fourteen when he returned. Jonquil Barclay chooses a nursing career against her father's wishes and enters Prelimanary Training School at the local Royal Infirmary in November 1949. Strict imposed and self-discipline is required from day one. Serious illness, death, drudgery, extreme emotions and the traumas of patients and their families become daily life. As do the rewards of working as a team, the joys of seeing patients recover and sheer job satisfaction. Four young nurses rooming together become firm friends. They have fun bending the Infirmary rules and find relief from their tensions in sharing experiences. Young love intrudes in more ways than one and a surprising Infirmary intrigue develops. Christmas 1949 shows a rare, happy atmosphere for patients and staff alike. The joy of getting through her PTS exams at the end of three hard months is more than Joni ever hoped for.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dream your dreams, my child, and knit them into the wool." A long time ago a girl named Claire learned to knit by her mother's side. As the mother knit mittens, scarves and all sorts of clothing for the wealthy people of the town, Claire set about knitting stockings to keep her toes warm. Claire, her mother and father, you see, were poor. They lived in a stone hut, with little wood to burn and meagre food to eat. So Claire knit stockings and--with Christmas approaching--heeded her mother's words to knit her Christmas dreams into the wool. Soon Claire became known as the stocking girl--with many orders for stockings to fill. One such order ensured her a handsome payment. Enough to fill her family's hut with light and food. But as she trudged through the snow to deliver the stockings on Christmas Eve, Claire was stirred to share her knitted dreams with someone truly in need. From the Hardcover edition.

Book The Book of Curiosities

Download or read book The Book of Curiosities written by John Platts and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-06-02 with total page 738 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Book of Curiosities" by John Platts is an encyclopedia and dictionary containing ten thousand wonders and curiosities of nature and art, remarkable astonishing places, beings, customs, experiments, animals, phenomena, of both Ancient and Modern Times, in all parts of the globe. Excerpt: "We shall now introduce to our readers some Ancient and Modern Opinions respecting the Hair. The ancients held the hair a sort of excrement, fed only with excrementitious matters, and no proper part of a living body. They supposed it generated of the fuliginous parts of the blood, exhaled by the heat of the body to the surface, and then condensed in passing through the pores. Their chief reasons were, that the hair being cut, will grow again, even in extreme old age, and when life is very low; that in hectic and consumptive people, where the rest of the body is continually emaciating, the hair thrives; nay, that it will even grow again in dead carcases."
