Among the most critical contemporary concerns are eutrophication and associated deterioration of water quality, plankton blooms, hypoxia and anoxia, loss of biodiversity and decline of living resources.

Book Pollution in the Black Sea

Download or read book Pollution in the Black Sea written by Konstantin Pokazeev and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-19 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides information on the causes, consequences, and possible solutions to modern environmental problems associated with ocean pollution with a particular focus on the Back Sea. The oceans are a vast but fragile complex. In recent decades, it has become especially manifest when ocean pollution has reached an unparalleled situation. Meanwhile, not only the well-being of ecosystems depends on the state of ocean waters, but human civilization largely depends on the oceans as a consequence of environmental dependence. This book examines the consequences of pollutants such as oil and hydrocarbon products (including plastics and microplastics), water acidification, sewage, wastewaters discharge into the ocean, thermal pollution, nuclear pollution, and biological pollution. Beyond the types of pollutants and their consequences, this book outlines the state of the art of the legal situation internationally regarding ocean pollution. The authors also show the current pollution of the inland seas, taking as an example of the Black Sea (anthropogenic and natural sources of pollution, its shelf, and shallow waters as well as international legislation). A part of the book analyzes the main types of environmental monitoring of the oceans and their role in solving ocean pollution problems with a particular interest in the Black Sea. The book is of interest to specialists in ocean pollution, ecologists, oceanologists, students, and graduate students studying oceanography, marine ecology, current methods of environmental monitoring, and legal problems related to the oceans and seas pollution, as well as to anyone interested in modern problems of the oceans.

Book Regional Co operation and Protection of the Marine Environment Under International Law

Download or read book Regional Co operation and Protection of the Marine Environment Under International Law written by Nilufer Oral and published by Martinus Nijhoff Publishers. This book was released on 2013-07-11 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Regional Co-operation and Protection of the Marine Environment Under International Law: The Black Sea, Nilufer Oral examines the regional co-operation mechanism for protection and preservation of the Black Sea marine environment within the framework of international law, and subsequently identifies the necessary components for a robust regional regime based on best legal practices. The book provides a thorough review of the complex modern challenges related to the Black Sea, with particular emphasis on biodiversity, fisheries, land-based pollution and vessel-based sources of pollution. A history of regional co-operation in the Black Sea offers an enlightening comparison to the development of regional co-operation in international law, in particular, to Part IX of the 1982 United Nations (Montego Bay) Convention on the Law of the Sea. Further comparative analyses, such as the existing regional regime of the Black Sea as established under the 1992 UNEP Regional Seas Programme, and selected regional seas programmes, including the acquis communautaire of the European Union, cohere into a firm foundation of present findings, upon which basis the author makes recommendations for the future. All those interested in the Law of the Sea, international environmental law, and fisheries management will find a critical new text in Regional Co-operation and Protection of the Marine Environment Under International Law: The Black Sea.

The Black Sea Region is an essential and unique part of southern Europe because of its geographical, cultural and historical features. It is the cradle of European civilisation, together with Greece and Rome. For centuries it neighboured onto and interacted with the cultures of the northern and southern Mediterranean, the Christian and Moslim worlds, and was the route of conquerors and migrations of whole nations. Here are closely interwoven the cultures and customs of nations, economic and trade relations, the history of wars and civilised relations of neighbouring countries.

Download or read book Sensitivity to Change written by Emin Özsoy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent decades have seen a degradation of the environmental quality in semi-enclosed seas, which are particularly sensitive to population pressures due to their naturally low flushing rates related to their geometry. The North Sea, Baltic Sea and the Black Sea are amongst the most seriously threatened seas in the Euro-Asian region. Each semi-enclosed sea has a distinct pattern of circulation, transport, mixing, associated with the particular geometry, topography, boundary processes, interior stratification, atmospheric forcing, ice fonnation, straits / sill controls, and the specific inputs of freshwater, nutrients and pollutants. The workshop investigated the distinctive physical and ecological characteristics of the three seas in a comparative manner, in order to identify the types of driving forces and dynamic controls operating on productivity, nutrient cycling, physical transport and mixing mechanisms. A comparative study of these controlling mechanisms would allow us to better understand ecosystem sensitivity in these different environments. The workshop presentations highlighted the complexity of the semi-enclosed seas related to the interaction amongst the physical, chemical and biological fields, and differences in time and space scales in each of the systems. Further, a strong climate signal exists in these systems, manifest in the interannual, interdecadal and longer term variability. Part of the variability appears connected with background climatic variability.

Book Black Sea In Crisis The Symposium Ii An Encounter Of Beliefs A Single Objective

Download or read book Black Sea In Crisis The Symposium Ii An Encounter Of Beliefs A Single Objective written by Sarah Hobson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1999-01-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a record of the proceedings of a remarkable symposium that took place on the Black Sea in September 1997. It was held under the auspices of The Ecumenical Patriarch, His All Holiness Bartholomew I, and His Excellency Mr Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission. It was the second in a series of symposia on the theme of 'Religion, Science and the Environment'. The first symposium, entitled 'Revelation and the Environment', took place on the Aegean Sea in 1995, to celebrate the 1,900th anniversary of the Book of the Apocalypse.Over a period of ten days, more than 400 distinguished scientists, environmentalists, religious leaders and policy-makers from 35 countries discussed the environmental problems facing the Black Sea — a unique environment, sadly degraded by the imprint of humankind and causing profound changes in the economy and life-style of the 160 million people in the area. The book offers ideas to help restore the environmental balance of this much-threatened region. At the same time, it looks at the Black Sea as a paradigm for the world's closed sea problems and demonstrates the value and potential of an integrated approach to global environmental stewardship.

Book Environment and Habitation around the Ancient Black Sea

Download or read book Environment and Habitation around the Ancient Black Sea written by David Braund and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2021-05-10 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environment and human habitation have become principal topics of research with the growing interest in the Black Sea region in antiquity. This book highlights their interaction around all the coasts of the region, from different perspectives and disciplines. Here, archaeological excavation and survey combine with studies of classical texts, cults, medicine, and more, to explore ancient experiences of the region. Accordingly, the region is examined from external viewpoints, centred in the Mediterranean (Herodotus, the Hippocratics, ancient geographers, and poets), and through local lenses, particularly supplied by archaeology. While familiar disconnects emerge, there is also a striking coherence in the results of these different pathways into the study of local environments, which embrace not only Graeco-Roman settlement, but also a broader range of agricultural and pastoralist activities across a huge landscape which stretches as far afield as ancient Hungary. Throughout, there are methodological implications for research elsewhere in the ancient world. This book shows people in landscapes across a huge expanse, in local reality and in external conceptions, complete with their own agency, ideas, and lifestyles.
