Book The Black Photo Album

Download or read book The Black Photo Album written by Santu Mofokeng and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "...with the so-called civilised workers, almost without exception their civilisation was only skin deep." O. Pirow, quoting South African Prime Minister J. B. M. Hertzog For this book Santu Mofokeng collected private photographs which urban black working and middle-class families in South Africa commissioned between 1890 and 1950, a time when the government was creating policies towards those designated as "natives". Painterly in style, the images evoke the artifices of Victorian photography. Some of them are fiction, a creation of the artist in terms of setting, props, clothing and pose - yet there is no evidence of coercion. We believe these images, as they reveal something about how these people imagined themselves. In this work Mofokeng analyses the sensibilities, aspirations and self-image of the black population and its desire for representation and social recognition in times of colonial rule and suppression. The Black Photo Album / Look at Me: 1890-1950 is drawn from an ongoing research project of the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

Book The Randy Rhoads Photo Book

Download or read book The Randy Rhoads Photo Book written by Jett Black and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a small part of my memories hanging out in the music scene of the 70's. I first met Randy in 1974 at well-known Hollywood club 'Rodney Bingenheimer's English Disco' during the time he and Kelly Garni was playing with John Condon & his band 'Smokey'. I knew how great he was even back then. With a small ego & big personality, Randy was a fun, lighthearted kind of guy. Not shy really, but rather bashful, and very serious when it came to his Music. He was a lot of fun to be around & hang out with. We stayed friends until the end. His death devastated me... I never thought it would all end so soon. Randy Rhoads was an Amazing guitar player and a great person, and I am blessed to have known him. Jett Black

Book Gilles Peress and Chris Klatell Annals of the North

Download or read book Gilles Peress and Chris Klatell Annals of the North written by Chris Klatell and published by Steidl. This book was released on 2020-09-29 with total page 904 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An almanac to the world of Gilles Peress' Whatever You Say, Say Nothing, delineating the decades of conflict in Northern Ireland In Annals of the North, New York-based photographer Gilles Peress (born 1946) and writer and lawyer Chris Klatell combine essays, stories, photographs, documents and testimonies to open up for the reader the complicated and contradictory storylines that emerged from the conflict in the North of Ireland. Weighed down by 800 years of colonization but only the size of Connecticut (with half its population), Northern Ireland provides a remarkably intimate stage set. Interweaving text and image, Annals of the Northexamines the multifaceted struggle between Irish Republicans and Nationalists, Protestant Unionists and Loyalists, and the imperial British, to explore broader themes of empire, retribution and betrayal, as well as the tense dialectic between the ordinary demands of everyday life and periodic explosions of violence. The book is at once wide-ranging yet deeply personal and political, alternately dense and humorous, legal and literary.

Book American Realities

Download or read book American Realities written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, more Americans lived below the poverty line than at any time since 1959, when the U.S. Census Bureau began collecting this data. In 2011, Kira Pollack, Director of Photography at 'TIME', commissioned photographer Joakim Eskildsen to capture the growing crisis, affecting nearly 46.2 million Americans. Based on census data, the places with the highest poverty rates were chosen when Eskildsen, together with journalist Natasha del Toro, traveled to New York, California, Louisiana, South Dakota, and Georgia over seven months to document the lives of the people behind the statistics. The people Joakim Eskildsen has portrayed are people who struggle to make ends meet, who have lost their jobs or homes, and often live in unhealthy conditions. They usually remain invisible in the American society to which the myth of the American Dream is still very strong. Many of the people held there was no such dream anymore, merely the American Reality.

Book excerpt: A stunning collection of the most iconic photographs ever taken of Black Flag, along with never-before-seen shots and a foreword by Chuck Dukowski. 256 jam-packed pages, over 300 photographs, and over 70% of the photos have never been seen. What I See: The Black Flag Photographs of Glen E. Friedman is an incredible compilation of all of Friedman's most iconic and recognizable images (from 1980 to 1983), of this seminal American punk band, as well as over one hundred never-before-seen photos made during those phenomenal peak years in the group's history. The book includes a foreword by Chuck Dukowski, a cofounder and bass player of Black Flag. Friedman's own introduction to the book takes readers through his journey with the group, from the very first time he saw them play, to his perspectives on the music of the era, to the how, why, and what Black Flag were doing at the time. His words provide additional context to the imagery, explaining what drove him to create his art alongside the band. From the streets around Black Flag's single-room home base/office, rehearsing for their first album, handing out flyers, wheat-pasting posters, driving for hours to a show and returning the same night, house parties, clubs, to the big stage and the beach, Glen E. Friedman was there with his heart, soul, and most importantly his camera. In What I See, he shares with us and inspires us with these images that were made over an incredibly volatile three-year time span.
