  • Author : Emma Donoghue
  • Publisher : Little, Brown

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of Room, a young French burlesque dancer living in San Francisco is ready to risk anything in order to solve her friend’s murder—but only if the killer doesn’t get her first. Summer of 1876: San Francisco is in the fierce grip of a record-breaking heat wave and a smallpox epidemic. Through the window of a railroad saloon, a young woman named Jenny Bonnet is shot dead. The survivor, her friend Blanche Beunon, is a French burlesque dancer. Over the next three days, she will risk everything to bring Jenny's murderer to justice—if he doesn't track her down first. The story Blanche struggles to piece together is one of free-love bohemians, desperate paupers, and arrogant millionaires; of jealous men, icy women, and damaged children. It's the secret life of Jenny herself, a notorious character who breaks the law every morning by getting dressed: a charmer as slippery as the frogs she hunts. In thrilling, cinematic style, Frog Music digs up a long-forgotten, never-solved crime. Full of songs that migrated across the world, Emma Donoghue's lyrical tale of love and bloodshed among lowlifes captures the pulse of a boomtown like no other. "Her greatest achievement yet . . . Emma Donoghue shows more than range with Frog Music—she shows genius." —Darin Strauss, author of Half a Life.

Book The Collection of Short Stories for Children and Young Adults

Download or read book The Collection of Short Stories for Children and Young Adults written by Joseph Pagan and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 137 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I originally began creating childrens stories when I was a child myself. After I had grown up and was on a camping trip with three young children, they asked me to tell them a story. That gave rise to this book. The first five stories in this collection were written for children and with the interaction and help of children. The children suggested characters, places, and other elements that added to the completion of these stories. It is my hope that a lot of sleepyheads will enjoy them. The other six stories were written later. They are targeted for young adults and are, for the most part, adaptations of my unpublished screenplays. These I wrote while studying filmmaking in college. All the stories in this book were meant to be enjoyed and, maybe, give the readers a chuckle or two, some fun and exciting reading!

Mariana Souto-Manning is Associate Professor of Education in the Department of Curriculum and Teaching at Teachers College, Columbia University. “A profound, rich, and rewarding meditation and deep conversation with teachers fully engaging young children with culture, social history, and learning for the future. This wide-ranging book escapes temporal, spatial, and disciplinary boundaries. Read it and reflect on how you can take it into your own life of learning.” —Shirley Brice Heath, Professor Emerita, Stanford University “Early childhood educators will experience this unique book as a warm and detailed invitation to engage in multicultural education. The emphasis throughout is on “multi”—multiple pedagogical approaches, from culture circles to podcasts to story acting, and multiple cultural heritages embodied by active children and teachers. From a critical perspective and alongside creative teachers who aspire to be transformative, Souto-Manning links accessible theory with rich and thoughtful practices.” —Celia Genishi, Professor of Education, Teachers College, Columbia University “Mariana Souto-Manning’s Multicultural Teaching in the Early Childhood Classroom rightly places the use of deficit thinking and ineffective teaching strategies in the wasteland of classroom instruction. The author superbly documents and explains ways of teaching multiculturally that will richly benefit the learning of all students and make teaching become the fun that teachers dreamed it would be when they first said, ‘I want to teach because I love kids.’” —Carl A. Grant, Hoefs-Bascom Professor, University of Wisconsin-Madison “Multicultural Teaching in the Early Childhood Classroom encourages teachers to honor, affirm, and challenge even our very youngest children to think inclusively, critically, and democratically—a necessity if we are to help develop knowledgeable, caring, and empowered learners.” —Sonia Nieto, Professor Emerita, University of Massachusetts, Amherst

Book Frog of Arcadia

Download or read book Frog of Arcadia written by Blake Bobechko and published by FriesenPress. This book was released on 2021-12-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas is an aquarium toad of unknown parentage. He doesn’t know his past and the prospects for his future are dim. While he’s read extensively about faraway lands, Thomas has never ventured beyond the glass walls of home. But when happenstance leaves a door open into a brave new world, Thomas hopes he’ll finally discover where he belongs. As the story unfolds, this humble but educated toad finds himself in the middle of a civil feud between rival frog clans and a lost kingdom yet to be restored. Thomas wrestles with the tension of being a toad of two worlds, and learns that pride can overtake anyone, and that even victory can defeat the victor. Frog of Arcadia is an enchanting moral epic filled with cowardice and chivalry, pride and majesty, boorishness and heroism. But a divine order holds it all together and, at last, we all reap what we sow.
