Book Black Print with a White Carnation

Download or read book Black Print with a White Carnation written by Amy Helene Forss and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2014-01-01 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mildred Dee Brown (1905–89) was the cofounder of Nebraska’s Omaha Star, the longest running black newspaper founded by an African American woman in the United States. Known for her trademark white carnation corsage, Brown was the matriarch of Omaha’s Near North Side—a historically black part of town—and an iconic city leader. Her remarkable life, a product of the Reconstruction era and Jim Crow, reflects a larger American history that includes the Great Migration, the Red Scare of the post–World War era, civil rights and black power movements, desegregation, and urban renewal. Within the context of African American and women’s history studies, Amy Helene Forss’s Black Print with a White Carnation examines the impact of the black press through the narrative of Brown’s life and work. Forss draws on more than 150 oral histories, numerous black newspapers, and government documents to illuminate African American history during the political and social upheaval of the twentieth century. During Brown’s fifty-one-year tenure, the Omaha Star became a channel of communication between black and white residents of the city, as well as an arena for positive weekly news in the black community. Brown and her newspaper led successful challenges to racial discrimination, unfair employment practices, restrictive housing covenants, and a segregated public school system, placing the woman with the white carnation at the center of America’s changing racial landscape.

Book excerpt: "The Black Carnation" is a crime mystery novel set in London in the nineteenth century. Marietta Mazzucata was a brilliant Opera performer, a worthy successor to Grisi and Persiani, full of fire and dramatic force, not a mere musical box, twittering like a mechanical bird. Her private life was well guarded despite talk of many a young man's broken heart being tied to her. But the façade all comes down to a shocking explosion of dynamite, during the end of a performance at the Opera. An explosion that kills the famed singer instantly. Now, however, the tragic event of her death inspires the press to find out and publish all they could about her, in which case something would be found in her past life which would probably point to a reason for the manner of her death...

Download or read book The Carnation Genome written by Takashi Onozaki and published by Springer. This book was released on 2022-01-01 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes recent advances in carnation genome research for large-scale transcriptome analysis, the draft genome sequence, DNA markers and genome mapping, flower color, mutations, flower opening, vase life, interspecific hybridization, fragrance. The carnation is one of the most important ornamental flowers in the world, along with the chrysanthemum and the rose. The genus Dianthus is a member of the Caryophyllaceae and includes more than 300 species of annuals and evergreen perennials. Modern carnation cultivars are the product of highly complex hybridization, owing to their long history of breeding. The carnation genome was first sequenced in ornamentals by a Japanese research team in 2013. The carnation has been genetically improved over the years, and there are various types of flower colors, shapes, patterns, and sizes. In this book, the molecular mechanism of flower color development and the transposable elements responsible for this diversity are studied in detail. In addition, it presents breeding and physiological research for improving flower vase life, one of the most important traits in ornamentals, based on a model of ethylene susceptible flowers. To improve selection efficiency, genomic analysis tools including DNA markers and genetic linkage maps are also highlighted. In closing, the book discusses mutation breeding technologies such as ion-beam irradiation and genetically modified carnations.

Download or read book A White Sport Coat and a Pink Carnation written by Joseph Murphy and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2000-09-01 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story is a fast-paced human drama. High school is a time of innocence, a time for fun, when adolescents establish a set of values that will last a lifetime. In 1957, teens were carousing all across the country, as the 1950s were in full roar. The Bronx, New York was no different. Relive the adventures of the in crowd at St. Helenas Catholic high school as they learn the importance of friendship and the meaning of love. On a lark, four high school seniors celebrate an 18th birthday party in the school cafeteria. The only problems were that the school was closed for the night, and they brought along a keg of beer for the party. The nuns living three floors above, hear the commotion and think a rape is in process and phone the police, causing all Hell to break loose. The influence of the church and school seemed limitless. Most of the clergy served as a maturing authority to guide their students along the straight and narrow path. However, one rouge administrator had his own interpretation of the Lords missive. From this Brothers prospective, it was the principle behind the punishment that mattered. Responsible adults would be developed out of irresponsible boys. His actions and excessive punishments aimed at breaking down a select few pranksters would only serve as a rallying point to unify the student body and faculty to support the targets of his vengeance.
