Book Study in Black and White

Download or read book Study in Black and White written by Tanya Sheehan and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2019-05-06 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this volume, Tanya Sheehan takes humor seriously in order to trace how photographic comedy was used in America and transnationally to express evolving ideas about race, black emancipation, and civil rights in the mid-1800s and into the twentieth century. Sheehan employs a trove of understudied materials to write a new history of photography, one that encompasses the rise of the commercial portrait studio in the 1840s, the popularization of amateur photography around 1900, and the mass circulation of postcards and other photographic ephemera in the twentieth century. She examines the racial politics that shaped some of the most essential elements of the medium, from the negative-positive process to the convention of the photographic smile. The book also places historical discourses in relation to contemporary art that critiques racism through humor, including the work of Genevieve Grieves, Adrian Piper, Lorna Simpson, Kara Walker, and Fred Wilson. By treating racial humor about and within the photographic medium as complex social commentary, rather than a collectible curiosity, Study in Black and White enriches our understanding of photography in popular culture. Transhistorical and interdisciplinary, this book will be of vital interest to scholars of art history and visual studies, critical race studies, U.S. history, and African American studies.

Book The Black and White Pictures

Download or read book The Black and White Pictures written by William Eggleston and published by Scalo Verlag Ac. This book was released on 2004 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Eggleston is synonymous with color photography--or so we think. But the man who almost single-handedly established color photography in the art world with his 1976 Museum of Modern Art exhibition, "William Eggleston's Guide, started out as a black-and-white photographer. It was in the early 1960s that Eggleston first took to the camera, after discovering the work of Walker Evans and Henri Cartier-Bresson, and it was their black-and-white aesthetic that opened his lens. "Precolor presents Eggleston's never-before published black-and-white work, a roadmap for his later hyper-saturated color oeuvre. Eggleston's passion for everyday life, for the uncanny beauty of the mundane, is already evident in his black-and-white photographs. Whether it's a stack of metal chairs, a man at a pay phone, a child perched on a tree, or a teenager on a street corner--Eggleston captures them all with an off-hand elegance, casually endowing the most seemingly insignificant glimpses of life with substance and urgency.

Book excerpt: Taking pictures in black and white has always been a popular form of expression in the field of photography. For the beginner, they are a way to add a bit of classical flair to their photos, in an attempt to make more of a visual impact. For the professional, they present an opportunity to work in a medium that is different, and which makes for quite an adventure in itself, editing wise. While it may appear fairly simple to shoot in black and white, or monochrome, getting a result that actual titillates the mind and the imagination is quite complicated. There are a myriad of factors to consider when going full monochrome. The image format and how much editing flexibility it provides, the amount of contrast, from pitch black to snow white, in the photo, the textures, the shapes and the depth, are just some of the factors. The range of techniques that go into monochrome photography make it an art form that needs to be learnt in depth, before exploring further possibilities. Whether you are new to photography in general, or you haven't really explored the black and white realm, or even if you are experienced yet looking to do more in monochrome, this guide can benefit you to no end. Be it simply framing the photo, to advanced techniques such as editing monochromatic RAW, this guide has all the tips and tricks you need, to make an experience out of black and white photography. Remember that you may not have access to all the accessories, equipment and/or software mentioned in the book. He attended Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and then New York University. In 1943 he began the study which, as he describes in this book, changed his life magnificently: the study of the philosophy Aesthetic Realism with its founder, the poet and critic Eli Siegel. Louis Dienes says that Black & White expresses, “along with my enthusiasm for photography, my gratitude to Eli Siegel for teaching me that poetry arises from the oneness of the permanent opposites in reality as seen by an individual.” Photographs by Louis Dienes have appeared in numerous group shows at the Terrain Gallery. In 1962 he had a one-person exhibition at the Terrain. And, with the Aesthetic Realism Photographers, his work was included in travelling exhibitions throughout the United States. As poet, he is a co-author of the landmark book Personal & Impersonal: Six Aesthetic Realists (Definition Press, 1959). And poems by him have been published in such journals as Black Mountain Review, Georgia Review, Pegasus, Midland Poetry Review and the New York Herald Tribune Poet’s Column. Louis Dienes often spoke about how much he learned as he continued to attend classes in poetry and in the relation of art and life, conducted by the Aesthetic Realism Chairman of Education, Ellen Reiss.

Book Complete Guide to Black and White Photography Finding Something Different Beyond Color

Download or read book Complete Guide to Black and White Photography Finding Something Different Beyond Color written by Geralyn Walkenhorst and published by . This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beauty inside black and white pictures can't be denied. There are always things beyond color here. Let find out about the art of black and white photograph through this book. As the author said, "In a world dominated by colorful images, black and white and toned photographs can stand out as something different, something somehow more beautiful,". To work in the 21st century, a black and white or toned image must be special. It must express something not there in color. There must be a reason to change the reality of the image by turning it grayscale, not just that you can. All that said, there is absolutely nothing like a truly great black and white image.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Award-winning photographer Matt Black traveled over 100,000 miles to chronicle the reality of today’s unseen and forgotten America. When Magnum photographer Matt Black began exploring his hometown in California’s rural Central Valley—dubbed “the other California,” where one-third of the population lives in poverty—he knew what his next project had to be. Black was inspired to create a vivid portrait of an unknown America, to photograph some of the poorest communities across the US. Traveling across forty-six states and Puerto Rico, Black visited designated “poverty areas,” places with a poverty rate above 20 percent, and found that poverty areas are so numerous that they’re never more than a two-hour’s drive apart, woven through the fabric of the country but cut off from “the land of opportunity.” American Geography is a visual record of this five-year, 100,000-mile road trip, which chronicles the vulnerable conditions faced by America’s poor. This compelling compilation of black-and-white photographs is accompanied by Black’s own travelogue—a collection of observations, overheard conversations in cafe´s and public transportation, diner menus, bus timetables, historical facts, and snippets from daily news reports. A future classic of photography, this monograph is supported by an international touring exhibition and is a must-have for anyone with an interest in witnessing the reality of an America that’s been excluded from the American Dream.
