Book Martin of Tours

Download or read book Martin of Tours written by Régine Pernoud and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Regine Pernoud, the highly acclaimed French medieval historian, and author of best-selling titles on Joan of Arc and Hildegard of Bingen, as well as the book Those Terrible Middle Ages, presents an enlighteneing biography of one of France's most revered saints, and man whose impact on France, and Europe, continues to this days. Martin of Tours lived in the 4th century, at that great turning point in history when the Roman Empire fell and the Church took charge in the West. He left a successful career in the military life to become a monk, and later a Bishop who traveled extensively, evangelizing the countryside and creatiung that particular sort of community life in a village that is now called a "parish." More than four hundred towns and some four thousand parished in France are named after St. Martin. The term "chapel" is derived from the actual church where pilgrims venerate Martin's "cape" or cloak. Martin of Tours was a servant of the common man, as well as the nobility, and a very humble man who responded to the needs of his times and and opened up vast perspectives for ordinary, everyday life. Given the crisis of the Christian Faith now facing France and all of Europe, the story of this solider and great apostle and Christian evangelist is a timely one indeed.

Book Roman Military Equipment from the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome second edition

Download or read book Roman Military Equipment from the Punic Wars to the Fall of Rome second edition written by M. C. Bishop and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2006-04-22 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rome's rise to empire is often said to have owed much to the efficiency and military skill of her armies and their technological superiority over barbarian enemies. But just how 'advanced' was Roman military equipment? What were its origins and how did it evolve? The authors of this book have gathered a wealth of evidence from all over the Roman Empire - excavated examples as well as pictorial and documentary sources - to present a picture of what range of equipment would be available at any given time, what it would look like and how it would function. They examine how certain pieces were adopted from Rome's enemies and adapted to particular conditions of warfare prevailing in different parts of the Empire. They also investigate in detail the technology of military equipment and the means by which it was produced, and discuss wider questions such as the status of the soldier in Roman society. Both the specially prepared illustrations and the text have been completely revised for the second edition of this detailed and authoritative handbook, bringing it up to date with the very latest research. It illustrates each element in the equipment of the Roman soldier, from his helmet to his boots, his insignia, his tools and his weapons. This book will appeal to archaeologists, ancient and military historians as well as the generally informed and inquisitive reader.

Book The Soldier Bishop Ellison Capers Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Soldier Bishop Ellison Capers Classic Reprint written by Rev. Walter B. Capers and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Soldier-Bishop, Ellison Capers In presenting the life of Bishop Capers, it is a pleasure to acknowledge the assistance I have received from contributors and friends. To those bishops who knew and honored him and have herein paid their tribute to his memory, expressing so beautifully the love and esteem in which they held him - to them I wish to record my gratitude and appreciation. Bishop Capers ever cherished as sacred any expression of comradeship and confidence toward him, whether given by the humblest or the greatest of his fellow-men. But no experience gave him greater happiness than such expressions from his brother bishops. To those whose names appear in the volume in connection with memoirs, reminiscences, and anecdotes I also wish to express my appreciation, both for the material furnished and also for the spirit of loyal interest which prompted the contributions. It was at the suggestion of my brother, the Very Rev. William T. Capers, dean, Christ Church Cathedral, Lexington, Ky., that I was led to undertake this work. By his many admirable suggestions in regard to the method of securing certain valuable materials, and also in regard to the work in the last half of the book, I profited greatly. Bishop Capers is survived by five sons and two daughters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book Soldiers of the Virgin written by Kevin Gosner and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 1992-07-01 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early summer of 1712, a young Maya woman from the village of Cancuc in southern Mexico encountered an apparition of the Virgin Mary while walking in the forest. The miracle soon attracted Indian pilgrims from pueblos throughout the highlands of Chiapas. When alarmed Spanish authorities stepped in to put a stop to the burgeoning cult, they ignited a full-scale rebellion. Declaring "Now there is no God or King," rebel leaders raised an army of some five thousand "soldiers of the Virgin" to defend their new faith and cast off colonial rule.Using the trial records of Mayas imprisoned after the rebellion, as well as the letters of Dominican priests, the local bishop, and Spaniards who led the army of pacification, Kevin Gosner reconstructs the history of the Tzeltal Revolt and examines its causes. He characterizes the rebellion as a defense of the Maya moral economy, and shows how administrative reforms and new economic demands imposed by colonial authorities at the end of the seventeenth century challenged Maya norms about the ritual obligations of community leaders, the need for reciprocity in political affairs, and the supernatural origins of power. The first book-length study of the Tzeltal Revolt, Soldiers of the Virgin goes beyond the conventions of the regional monograph to offer an expansive view of Maya social and cultural history. With an eye to the contributions of archaeologists and ethnographers, Gosner explores many issues that are central to Maya studies, including the origins of the civil-religious hierarchy, the role of shamanism in political culture, the social dynamics of peasant corporate communities, and the fate of the native nobility after the Spanish conquest.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 5 friends, 1 pact, 1 lie People will do just about anything to protect their secrets and to keep the money flowing. Loyalty like respect is earned not given, unfortunately some have neither. What's more important? Loyalty or Honor? Respect or Money? Blood or Mud? There's a pandemic sweeping the globe called crack and Bryson Daniels is hellbent on introducing it to the streets of Dallas, Texas. He wants in on the ground floor, so he along with four friends that he's known since fourth grade Chuckie, Ronnie, Cutty and Peanut intend to corner a market yet to be made available to the public. True to teenaged angst and naivety, the five friends forge a pact, a blood oath of sorts: when they are adults ready to retire from the game, their children will take over their respective roles in the organization that they've built. There's one problem though, Bryson Daniels is the only one of the friends that has a daughter and their sons have made it painfully clear that they'll never take orders from a woman. Is Blood really thicker than water or will Bryson's friends remain loyal? There can only be one king, anything else left on the board is a toy soldier, a mere pawn. Love has a strange way of turning the tables in any given situation, even when you're handed a sure fire win.
