Book The B Word

  • Author : Maria San Filippo
  • Publisher : Indiana University Press
  • Release : 2013-04-12
  • ISBN : 0253008921

Download or read book The B Word written by Maria San Filippo and published by Indiana University Press. This book was released on 2013-04-12 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Often disguised in public discourse by terms like "gay," "homoerotic," "homosocial," or "queer," bisexuality is strangely absent from queer studies and virtually untreated in film and media criticism. Maria San Filippo aims to explore the central role bisexuality plays in contemporary screen culture, establishing its importance in representation, marketing, and spectatorship. By examining a variety of media genres including art cinema, sexploitation cinema and vampire films, "bromances," and series television, San Filippo discovers "missed moments" where bisexual readings of these texts reveal a more malleable notion of subjectivity and eroticism. San Filippo's work moves beyond the subject of heteronormativity and responds to "compulsory monosexuality," where it's not necessarily a couple's gender that is at issue, but rather that an individual chooses one or the other. The B Word transcends dominant relational formation (gay, straight, or otherwise) and brings a discursive voice to the field of queer and film studies.

Download or read book Face Value written by Autumn Whitefield-Madrano and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2016-06-21 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A fascinating look” (The Boston Globe) at how we think and talk about beauty in the twenty-first century—and the unexpected and often positive way that beauty shapes our lives. For decades, we’ve thought of beauty as a negative influence in our lives. We feel insecure in the face of retouched, impossibly-perfect images. We worry primping and preening are a distraction and a trap. But in Face Value, journalist Autumn Whitefield-Modrano dispels this one-sided beauty myth and examines the relationship between appearance and science, social media, sex, friendship, language, and advertising to show how beauty actually affects us day to day. Through meticulous research and interviews with dozens of women across all walks of life, she reveals surprising findings, like wearing makeup can actually relax you, you can convince people you’re better looking just by tweaking your personality, and the ways beauty can be a powerful tool of connection among women. Provocative and empowering, it celebrates a relaxed brand of feminism, one in which it’s equally okay to feel fierce in your fake eyelashes and confident when going makeup-free. Face Value is “an immensely valuable work, one that seamlessly—and impressively—combines the tropes of the academic lit review and the memoir and the work of cultural criticism into an engaging, and timely, follow-up to The Beauty Myth” (The Atlantic).

Book excerpt: The Wizard of Oz has captured the imagination of the public since publication of L. Frank Baum's first book of the series in 1900. The seventeen essays in this book address numerous questions of the boundaries between literature, film, and stage--and these have become essential to Oz scholarship. Together the essays explore the ways in which Oz tells us much about ourselves, our society, and our journeys.

Book Claiming the B in LGBT

Download or read book Claiming the B in LGBT written by Kate Harrad and published by Thorntree Press LLC. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even as the broader LGBT community enjoys political and societal advances in North America, the bisexual community still today contends with decades of misinformation stereotyping them as innately indecisive, self-loathing, and untrustworthy. Claiming the B in LGBT strives to give bisexuals a seat at the table. This guidebook to the history and future of the bisexual movement fuses a chronology of bisexual organizing with essays, poems, and articles detailing the lived experiences of bisexual activities struggling against a dominant culture driven by norms of monosexual attraction, compulsory monogamy, and inflexible notions of gender expression and identity. Kate Harrad's anthology of a thriving identity yearning to realize itself provides a vision of bisexuality that is beyond gay and straight, rather than left to merely occupy the space between.

Book The Archie Sabrina Universe

Download or read book The Archie Sabrina Universe written by Heather McAlpine and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2023-04-10 with total page 202 pages. Book excerpt: Intersecting with fan studies, TV and comics studies, queer, disability and feminist studies, as well as popular culture and media scholarship, this collection of essays is the first to offer critical examinations of Riverdale, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina and the broader Archie/Sabrina comics universe. Its authors interrogate these texts in an effort not only to make sense of their chaotic stories, but to understand our own ongoing fascination with their narratives. Contributing to a greater cultural conversation about representation in media, authors find unexpected value in the oftentimes ridiculous (mis)adventures of the Archie/Sabrina expanded universe.

Book A Brief Guide to Star Trek

Download or read book A Brief Guide to Star Trek written by Brian J. Robb and published by Robinson. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For over 40 years Star Trek has made a phenomenal cultural impact. Now more popular than ever - J.J. Abrams' reinvented Star Trek movie was one of the box office hits of 2009, grossing $385 million worldwide - the 'franchise' continues to have cultural, social and political resonance around the world. Star Trek has changed not just the way we look at space but also our own world. It gave the culture a lexicon of catchphrases, from "Beam me up, Scotty" to Dr McCoy's many complaints beginning "I'm a doctor, not a [...]!" Much of the 'future' technology depicted on Star Trek has come to feature in everyday life, from the communicator-like mobile phone to computer touch screens now taken for granted. Many of the world's most prominent scientists were inspired to pursue their careers (as were many writers and artists) due to an early exposure to Star Trek. In A Brief Guide to Star Trek, expert Brian J Robb charts the rise and rise of the show and explores its impact our culture.
