Book History of Electron Tubes

Download or read book History of Electron Tubes written by Sōgo Okamura and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost 90 years have passed since the invention of the thermionic electron valve in 1904 by Sir John Ambrose Fleming. During this period, the development of electron tubes created the so called Electroni Age. Electron tubes played the leading role in the electronic equipments until the middle of the 1950s when solid state devices such as transistors and integrated circuits replaced electron tubes in various applications and accelerated the electronic age.

Book Getting the most out of Vacuum tubes

Download or read book Getting the most out of Vacuum tubes written by Robert B. Tomer and published by BOOK GEEK. This book was released on 1960-01-01 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Types and causes of tube failures, what to expect from tubes, testing methods, and all about tube maintenance programs. Over 80% of all electronic equipment defects result, directly or indirectly, from tube failures. Why do tubes fail? What can be done to prevent them from failing before there time? How can you determine whether a tube is good or bad,or how well and how long it will work in a given circuit? Should tubes be replaced periodically, whether they've failed or not...or should they be tested every so often, and replaced if indications show them to be below par? This book supplies the answers to these and many many more questions!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birthing the Computer: From Relays to Vacuum Tubes is the first in a multi-volume series on historical computing machines. This series will span the development of computer systems from the Zuse machines of the early 1930s to about 1995 when microprocessors began to be commoditized. Each volume will focus on a range of technologies, or a class of machines or a particular vendor, and will describe the hardware of the machines and its peripherals, the operating system and system software, and its influence upon programming languages. This volume begins with the Zuse machines which were constructed from relays, but contained the basic elements of a computer system, namely input, computing engine, and output. Early machines from Atanasoff and Berry, Aiken, Stibitz, and IBM are described. The transition from relays to vacuum tubes increased speed and performance significantly, and led to the first true computers in ENIAC, EDSAC, and EDVAC which used paper tape and Williams tubes for I/O and storage. These machines were built by universities. Several early machines were purpose built such as Colossus and BINAC, and created with government support and industrial know-how. By the mid-to-late ‘50s, computing machines were being built by universities (the SSEM, Whirlwind, and IAS machines), governments (the NBS SEAC and SWAC, and several other machines), and industry (the UNIVAC series and the English Electric DEUCE). Most of these machines were constructed using the von Neumann architecture, and represent an evolution of thinking in how computing machines were to operate along with some innovative ideas in software and programming languages. By the end of the 1950s, the design, development, programming and use of computing machines were in full ferment as many new ideas were proposed, many different machines were designed and some were constructed. Computing machines became a commercial enterprise. Governments receded from building machines to levying requirements and funding construction, while universities continued to explore new architectures, new operating systems, and new programming languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The A B C of Vacuum Tubes in Radio Reception: An Elementary and Practical Book on the Theory and Operation of Vacuum Tubes as Detectors and Amplifiers; Explains Non-Mathematically the Fundamental Principles Upon Which All Vacuum Tube Circuits Are Based The inauguration of radio-telephone broadcasting has quickly aroused an enormous general interest in radio reception of speech and music. The possibilities of this new method of broadcasting information of general interest and entertainment can hardly be estimated. The method is revolutionary and has been aptly compared to the invention of the printing press in this respect. Vacuum tubes make possible the reception of radio-telephone speech and music and radio-telegraph signals with a degree of satisfaction not approached by prior devices. The vacuum tube appears to the layman as a complicated form of incandescent electric lamp which operates in a very mysterious manner. In writing this little book the author has endeavored to overcome this impression and to clearly set forth the elementary principles of theory and operation. It is assumed that the 'reader has no knowledge of radio and very little, if any, of electricity. Mathematics has been especially avoided in the treatment of the subject and no technical terms are used without their meaning being made clear. Book A Brief History of Bendix Red Bank Tubes

Download or read book A Brief History of Bendix Red Bank Tubes written by Charles Hansen and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-02-15 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: But the fact is, these super-tubes were made by what to most people was an obscure division of Bendix Aviation Corporation. The plant in which they were made was originally called the Bendix Red Bank Division, in Eatontown, N.J. the author is goingto take you on a bit of a trip through history: The history of military vacuum tubes, the history of Bendix Aviation, the triggering event that put Eclipse-Pioneer and Bendix Aviation in the vacuum tube business, and a history of the Bendixtube business and its important developments. The author is also going to give you valuable information about all the hype and hoopla surrounding the "Bendix" tubes being offered on eBay and other surplus sources. The Bendix tube business ceased operation only about 45 years ago, but detailed information is extremely difficult to find. It was mainly through the remaining retired employees, the local Bendix retired employees associations, and old Eatontown documents that were used by the author to piece together this puzzle. Some of it is anecdotal and may not be entirely accurate. By the time the author started working at Bendix in 1966, there was hardly even a mention of the tube businessat Eatontown.
