Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shetland has always been synonymous with exciting birding. The islands are nationally important for their 21 species of breeding seabirds, and other extremely rare or sporadic British breeders such as the Red-necked Phalarope and Snowy Owl. They are also much-visited by passage migrants. In particular, Fair Isle rivals the Isles of Scilly as THE place for keen listers to go in the autumn, and this picturesque little island, with its famous bird observatory, regularly hosts extreme rarities. Following the style of the popular Birds of Norfolk and Birds of Suffolk, this new avifauna looks in depth at the status, distribution and abundance, past and present, of every bird recorded in Shetland. Population trends for breeders and regular visitors are analysed, and a detailed breakdown of all Shetland records is presented for the rarities. This book will make fascinating reading for all those interested in Shetland's birds, and will be a key resource for those studying the birdlife of this special group of islands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Shetland: With Observations on Their Habits, Migration, and Occasional AppearanceJust twenty years ago, my dear brother was preparing, with all the eagerness of a boy naturalist, to be the companion of my second visit to Shetland, where the summer was to be spent as we 10 ved best to spend it; nor is it altogether without a strange sort of fitness that he now hands me the result of his work thus begun, as he passes out of our Sight for a while. Yet the task of giving it to the world is far from easy to one who has for so many years been out of the track of natural science, though loving no earthly thing so well. I can claim but a single merit for my share in the book, - that of accuracy: for the rest, allowance must be generously made for short comings almost inseparable from work thrown unexpectedly upon a parish priest, only able to give to it the hours which could be spared, and ill spared, from occupations of a wholly.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: In this gloriously illustrated companion to her crime novels featuring Inspector Jimmy Perez, Ann Cleeves takes readers through a year on Shetland. Discover its past, meet its people, celebrate its festivals and see how the flora and fauna of the islands change with the seasons. An archipelago of more than a hundred islands, Shetland is the one of the most remote places in the United Kingdom. Its fifteen hundred miles of shore mean that wherever one stands, there is a view of the sea. It has sheltered voes and beaches and dramatically exposed cliffs, lush meadows full of wild flowers in the summer and bleak hilltops where only the hardiest of plants will grow. It is a place where traditions are valued and celebrated, but new technologies and ways of working are also embraced. Whether it is the drama of the Viking fire festival of Up Helly Aa in winter, or the piercing blue and hot pink of spring flowers on the clifftops, the long, white nights of midsummer or the fierce gales and high tides of autumn, Shetland is vividly captured in all its bleak and special beauty. A book to treasure, full of photos and insightful notes about the stunning location of the Shetland series, now a major BBC One drama starring Douglas Henshall.

Download or read book The Seabird s Cry written by Adam Nicolson and published by Henry Holt and Company. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life itself could never have been sustainable without seabirds. As Adam Nicolson writes: "They are bringers of fertility, the deliverers of life from ocean to land." A global tragedy is unfolding. Even as we are coming to understand them, the number of seabirds on our planet is in freefall, dropping by nearly 70% in the last sixty years, a billion fewer now than there were in 1950. Of the ten birds in this book, seven are in decline, at least in part of their range. Extinction stalks the ocean and there is a danger that the grand cry of the seabird colony, rolling around the bays and headlands of high latitudes, will this century become little but a memory. Seabirds have always entranced the human imagination and NYT best-selling author Adam Nicolson has been in love with them all his life: for their mastery of wind and ocean, their aerial beauty and the unmatched wildness of the coasts and islands where every summer they return to breed. The seabird’s cry comes from an elemental layer in the story of the world. Over the last couple of decades, modern science has begun to understand their epic voyages, their astonishing abilities to navigate for tens of thousands of miles on featureless seas, their ability to smell their way towards fish and home. Only the poets in the past would have thought of seabirds as creatures riding the ripples and currents of the entire planet, but that is what the scientists are seeing now today.

Excerpt: ...one I have always experienced a considerable amount of difficulty in restoring the feathers of the back of the neck to their original position. THE COMMON SANDPIPER. Totanus hypoleucos. It was not until the year 1869 that I was able to procure for identification so much as a single specimen of this bird, when, on the 2d of July, Robert Mouat not only shot a pair at the Loch of Cliff, but had a chase after the young as they ran among the long grass. This is the only direct evidence of its breeding in Shetland; though that it does so regularly is pretty certain, for during the summer months the bird is often heard and sometimes seen. Messrs Baikie and Heddle consider it merely an occasional visitor to Orkney. Thomas Edmondston's singular mistake of recording this species as a winter visitor to Shetland was afterwards corrected by himself. Somewhat later in the above-named year, I myself shot one from a small party, perhaps a family. It fell, winged, into the water, and remained swimming leisurely about while I pushed off the boat and rowed up; but the bird dived the moment I attempted to seize it, and although I kept a strict look-out all round upon the dead-calm surface of the water it never reappeared. Another singular fact in connection with the habits of this bird is its, at any rate occasional, terror at thunder. I remember as a boy, in the autumn of 1850, trying for several days to get near some Common Sandpipers which had appeared upon the rocky shore near Dunnose, in the Isle of Wight, but so wild were they that not even a long shot could be obtained. One afternoon while I was endeavouring to stalk them, a heavy thunderstorm came on, and during one remarkably heavy peal I observed the birds fluttering to the shelter of the rocks;...
