Its general position is about parallel with the coast-line of the mainland, trending slightly northward from west to east. The north shore in general is abrupt and hilly, owing to a low range of hills termed the backbone of the island, which, in places along the Sound, form high, bold bluffs often 100 feet and more in height. The south shore fronts the Atlantic Ocean, forming an outlying beach separated, in great part, from the land by shallow bays and salt marshes. Except at its eastern extremity this beach is low and sandy, shifting somewhat year by year under the influence of the winds as well as by the action of the tides and waves. Frequent complaints of this nature have induced me to offer the present volume, with a view of placing within the reach of the "gunners," the means of becoming more thoroughly acquainted with the birds frequenting Long Island. The additions all departments of Natural History are continually receiving, is evidence, that with however much zeal and energy the different branches have been pursued, and notwithstanding the praiseworthy exertions bestowed by those who have distinguished themselves in their various pursuits, still we find their labors are not so far complete as to leave nothing for their successors. While the Botanist, Mineralogist, Entomologist, and Conchologist are enriching their cabinets, the Ornithologist is finding in our vast territory undescribed species. The "Journal of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia," (1841, ) contains an article giving the views of Dr. Bachman, relative to the course our Naturalists should pursue in the publication of American species viz. that all north of the Tropic of Cancer twenty-three and a half degrees, should be called North America - the Tropics, Tropical or Central America - and south of the Tropic of Capricorn, South America." The large scope which our Zoology embraces, deters many persons from making collections, as they despair ever being able to complete them. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Connecticut Facing Long Island Sound for practically all of its hundred miles of southern border, Connecticut shows a succession of low, rocky promontories and sandy beaches divided by shallow bays and salt marshes. The latter stretch for varying distances northward, but soon give place to rather broad stream valleys, separated by gently rising hills. These hills, usually low and rounded at the coast, when not dikes or sheets of trap, as near New Haven, become rapidly more mountainous in the northwestern part of the state, culminating in Bear Mountain in the extreme corner, 2,354 feet in altitude and sixty miles from the Sound. The soil of these hills is usually poor and shallow, while that of many of the valleys is deep and rich, so that, while the lowlands are well cultivated and thickly settled, the uplands are generally left to brush land or forest. From this configuration it will be evident that most of the streams are short and flow in a southerly direction. Three main river courses cross the state: - the Thames on the east, which for its lower quarter is practically an arm of the sea, and above that hardly more than a small stream; the Connecticut, which passes through the center, in a broad and fertile valley in its upper course, and in a narrow valley hemmed in by highlands below Portland; and the Housatonic in the western part, with a narrow and much more mountainous valley. Apparently the Connecticut and upper Housatonic valleys and the southern coast line are highways for the migration of our birds in spring, and the coast line certainly is in fall, but our information on this point is at present very incomplete. The woodland consists chiefly of deciduous trees, though hemlocks and cedars are common, and groves of white pine and spruce still exist in the northwestern portion. Shut off from the ocean by Long Island, strictly pelagic birds are seldom found in Connecticut, but for many other species it is particularly fitted as regards climate and topography. Of the natural factors which influence the bird life of any part of the world, those due to the climate are undoubtedly of foremost importance. Among these is light, the effect of which may be illustrated by reference to owls, goatsuckers and woodcocks, which feed mostly by night or in the twilight, and in the daytime must hide away in hollows or dark portions of the forest. To a less extent the influence of this factor is observed in those forest species such as many thrushes and wood warblers whose eyes are noticeably larger than those of their relatives which live in more open surroundings, and unquestionably the intensity of light affects their nervous equilibrium to such an extent that it even determines their presence or absence in a given locality, apart from all other factors. Temperature has usually been considered the most important climatic factor and is the principal one taken into account by the United States Biological Survey in mapping the distribution of animals in America. As illustrations of this factor, it is frequently evident when surveying a ravine in central New York or when approaching the outskirts of the Adirondacks, that such species as the Junco, Canada warbler and Hermit thrush will frequently be present or absent according as the average temperature varies 2 or 3 degrees during the six hottest weeks of summer. Of very great importance is the humidity, which is largely dependent upon temperature and, with it, regulates the distribution of many species.
