This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Iona and Mull, 1852-70 When it was first proposed that the late Mr H. D. Graham's mss. Should be resuscitated and saved from oblivion, the present Editor had by that time devoted a large share of personal attention to the Natural History of the West of Scotland and the Isles. But as he was aware that Mr H. D. Graham's Notes and Letters were then under able editorship, and had been announced for publica tion, he considered his time and opportunities would be better bestowed upon other districts which were not receiving so much attention. Although a few occasions did permit of his visiting portions of Mull, and he kept a few notes of such facts as he met with, no special care was given to Mull until it became surely ascertained that the volume on Iona and Mull was not going to appear under the editorship of Mr Robert Gray; nor were any steps taken until after that gentleman's death to again communi cate with the family of Mr Graham regarding the Manuscripts and Sketches, of which latter the present Editor retained a vivid recollection, having seen them in Mr Gray's house in Glasgow. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive guide to walking on Scotland's Isle of Mull and the neighbouring islands of Ulva, Gometra, Iona and Erraid, providing 47 routes ranging between 3 and 14 miles. Offering routes for walkers of all abilities, the guide features a mix of long and short circuits alongside more demanding mountain traverses. Although challenging, these traverses involve few technical difficulties and are hugely rewarding for properly equipped and experienced walkers. Suitable for year-round walking, most visitors will stay in the main settlement of Tobermory, but Dervaig, Salen, Craignure and Bunessan also offer services and accommodation options. For each of the 47 routes, the guide includes OS mapping, detailed route description and insights into local points of interest. The introduction and appendices offer information about accommodation and services available across the island, as well as ferry routes. Easily accessible from Oban on the west coast of Scotland, the Isle of Mull will appeal to walkers seeking secluded routes with inspiring views around every corner. Boasting wild, rugged scenery and a spectacular coastline, Mull offers outstanding opportunities to observe wildlife including golden and sea eagles, otters, deer, dolphins and harbour porpoise. The islands are endlessly fascinating for geologists due to their volcanic and glaciated past, resulting in rock formations found nowhere else in the world.

Book Birds in Scotland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Valerie M. Thom

Download or read book Birds in Scotland written by Valerie M. Thom and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-11-30 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The most important work on the birds of Scotland ever published' - British Birds This comprehensive study and review of the birds in Scotland follows on from where the celebrated two volumes of The Birds of Scotland (1953), by Dr Baxter and Miss Rintoul, left off. It does more than that, however, since not only has there been a profound increase in ornithological coverage and data (as reflected in the species accounts), there have also been great changes in habitat and environment since the days of Baxter & Rintoul. These aspects form the themes of the ten preliminary chapters reviewing the Scottish scene today in terms of habitat, conservation, birdwatching and the changes in species status and distribution. The species accounts, the backbone of the book, review the period 1950-83 but include, where practicable, records of rarities and details of counts up to the spring of 1985; there are also brief summaries of earlier data based on the researches of Baxter & Rintoul. In all, 497 species are dealt with. The texts of major species accounts are complemented by 173 distribution maps and many tables of relevant data, and there are 129 species drawings by a team of artists under the editorship of Donald Watson, who also contributes chapter head pieces and other drawings. A section of photographs illustrates the varied habitats typical of Scotland today. There are, further, appendices and an extensive bibliography. The book will be of great interest to all birdwatchers in Scotland but of special value, too, to the many thousands of birdwatching visitors from elsewhere in these islands and from countries abroad. The Scottish Ornithologists' Club, for whom the book is published, and all whose records and researches made the author's work possible, have reason to be proud of Valerie Thom's achievement.
