Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds of Calcutta The kind reception accorded to the first edition of the present little work has been deemed a justification for its reproduction in an improved form. A few necessary alterations have been made to bring it up to date, and the chapters have been re-arranged so as to bring the birds dealt with into the same order as that in which they occur in the Fauna of British India, Bird volumes. The scientific names used for Indian birds are those of the above work, the few foreign species mentioned bearing the name given them in the British Museum Catalogue of Birds. Book The Birds Convention Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Birds Convention Classic Reprint written by Harriet Williams Myers and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Birds' Convention "The meeting will please come to order." It was Mr. Mockingbird who spoke and, instantly, there was quiet among the birds. "I think you all know why we are here assembled," began Mr. Mockingbird. "It is to hold our First Annual Convention of the birds. All our human brothers hold meetings which they call 'conventions, ' and from what I hear of them, they are most enjoyable occasions. Only last night the mistress of the yard where Mrs. Mocker and I 'dwell and raise our families, was telling her mate of an 'affair, ' as she called it, and I am sure it must have been delightful." "Yes, my friends," spoke up Mrs. Mocker, "our family" - meaning the humans where she lived -"go to many things of that kind. Only a short time ago the daughter went on a moonlight picnic, a thing we would not care to do, although Mr. Mocker always sings these spring nights and would not mind an evening meeting, I suppose." "The boy at our house often goes to 'games' as he calls them," said Mr. Jay. "He is a football player, whatever that may be, and sometimes he comes home all bruised up. I am sure that nothing of that kind will happen at our Convention," and Mr. Jay tried to look meek. Mrs. Goldfinch whispered to her neighbor that she guessed if Mr. Jay behaved himself the others would. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Calcutta Review, 1865, Vol. 41 Now - in whatever measure these divisions hold good with regard to mammals, we cannot but help thinking that they are decidedly arbitrary with regard to birds. Our Opinion is this -that as the flora of a place is dependent on the tempera ture, and the insects dependent on the flora, so the birds, by being to a great extent dependent on insect food, are to be found to range according to the vegetation. In the low valleys of the Himalayas, where heat and moisture combine to form a very tropical vegetation, we find the very finest forms Of insects are developed, and those birds frequenting the same region are generally nearly allied, as well as the insects, to the tropical forms found further south in the Islands of the Indian Archipelago, where the vegetation is Of much the same character. The higher up the mountain sides we go, we find the birds and insects vary according to the zones of vegetation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales of the Birds There is a certain quiet bit of land, just where two midland counties meet, that is in winter a favourite resort Of the fieldfares. There they find all they need - the hedges are usually bright with hips, and with the darker crimson berries of the hawthorn the fields are all pasture-meadows, and the grass is tufty and full of insects; a little stream winds snake-like through the fields, hidden by an overarching growth Of briar and bramble. NO well-worn path crosses these meadows, and you may count on being undisturbed if you sit for a few minutes, to enjoy the winter sunshine and. Or that has never listened for a moment to their songs, nor watched their graceful movements, nor admired their beautiful form and plumage? Alas! That any should be found who, for mere amusement, can silence their soft and joyous notes, mangle their curious frames, or rob and destroy their inimitable dwellings. Book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint

Download or read book Our Birds and Their Nestlings Classic Reprint written by Margaret Coulson Walker and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-11 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Birds and Their Nestlings Since permanent interest in any subject cannot be awakened through occasional lessons, it is believed that much profit will come from a few weeks' continuous read ing along a single line, - reading which will create a love for the beautiful through understanding. Ignorance closes the door to much of our best' literature, which can be interpreted only through a sympathetic familiarity with nature. Color, sound, and movement are always attractive to childhood, and nowhere can they be found in such pleas ing combination as in the bird world. The study of its busy little inhabitants in their natural environment will not only add pleasure to the walks of the child, but will help him to a knowledge of the adaptation of all life to its surroundings. It will also lead to the intelligent appreciation of litera ture and music. Since the birth of time the birds have inspired poets and musicians. They have also given the keenest pleas ure to countless thousands who have never attempted to express what they felt. To interest a child in these guests of our groves, - these feathered entertainers who are also workers in our fields and orchards, - is to put him in possession of a wellspring of interest as enduring as life itself. Book Birds of the Plains Classic Reprint

Download or read book Birds of the Plains Classic Reprint written by Douglas Dewar and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Birds of the Plains It is easy enough to write a book. The difficulty is to sell the production when it is finished. That, however, is not the author's business. Nevertheless, the labours of the writer are not over when he has completed the last paragraph of his book. He has, then, in most cases, to find a title for it. This, I maintain, should be a matter of little difficulty. I regard a title as a mere distinguishing mark, a brand, a label, a something by which the book may be called when spoken of - nothing more. According to this view, the value of a title lies, not in its appropriateness to the subject-matter, but in its distinctiveness. To illustrate: some years ago a lady entered a bookseller's shop and asked for "Drummond's latest book - Nux Vomica." The bookseller without a word handed her Lux Mundi. To my way of thinking Lux Mundi is a good title inasmuch as no other popular book has one like it. So distinctive is it that even when different words were substituted the bookseller at once knew what was intended.
