Book Ecology of Arctic Environments

Download or read book Ecology of Arctic Environments written by Sarah J. Woodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once thought of as a pristine environment, it is now all too apparent that the Arctic is a sink for pollutants transported northwards over long distances in the atmosphere and oceans, and is also likely to be subject to major climate change as a result of global warming. Many ecologists are currently seeking to further our understanding of how arctic ecosystems function, and to detect and predict anthropogenic changes which may occur within them. This book, resulting from a British Ecological Society Special Symposium, addresses these issues.

Book Variation in Growth and Seasonal Condition of Ringed Seal Phoca Hispida from the Canadian Arctic

Download or read book Variation in Growth and Seasonal Condition of Ringed Seal Phoca Hispida from the Canadian Arctic written by and published by . This book was released on 1907 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ringed seal (Phoca hispida) morphometric data from three locations in the eastern Canadian Arctic were compared to examine geographic variation in aspects of growth, life-history, and condition. Seals from Eureka (80$\sp\circ$ N) reached an asymptotic length of 150.9 cm, 14.0 cm greater than individuals from Arctic Bay (73$\sp\circ$ N) and 22.7 cm greater than those from Pangnirtung (66$\sp\circ$ N). Seals may reach sexual maturity sooner in Arctic Bay than Eureka or Pangnirtung. Statistically significant sexual dimorphism was evident in Pangnirtung were males were 6.7% longer than females. Condition, expressed as blubber content (% of total mass) was estimated using three published indices of condition: blubber thickness, axillary girth/length $\bullet$ 100, and the 'LMD' index. These indices did not adequately describe changes in condition for this data and did not provide a meaningful measure of the absolute amount of fat present. A new method of estimating absolute sculp (skin and blubber) mass from sculp volume calculated by a prolate spheroid model was developed. Regressions of mass in relation to length for various seasons demonstrated that spring and summer mass loss averaged 14 kg for an adult seal with an asymptotic length of 128 cm. Prior to sexual maturity, juveniles lost proportionally less mass than adults. Observed differences in growth and condition may reflect variation in life-history strategies related to primary productivity and predation pressure by polar bear (Ursus maritimus) and Inuit.

Book New POPs in Marine Mammals in Nordic Arctic and NE Atlantic Areas During Three Decades

Download or read book New POPs in Marine Mammals in Nordic Arctic and NE Atlantic Areas During Three Decades written by Maria Dam and published by Nordic Council of Ministers. This book was released on 2011-11-25 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Marine mammals hold a special position in the hearts of people inhabiting Nordic Arctic areas and in coastal communities around the North Atlantic Ocean as they are an essential part of the diet and traditional life-style. However, marine mammals are in a particularly vulnerable position as regards environmental pollutants, because of the large fat stores in their bodies which serve as a "magnet" to a large number of persistent and toxic pollutants. A Nordic Council of Ministers supported collaboration between Norway, Denmark/Greenland, Faroe Island, Iceland and Sweden set out to look for possible trends in "new" contaminants in marine mammals in Nordic Arctic waters. The "new" contaminants in focus are the brominated flame retardants including the PBDEs, methoxylated PBDEs, perfluorinated compounds including the PFOS family, and polychlorinated naphthalenes. In addition, a subset of the samples was analysed for brominated dioxins and dibenzofurans. The marine mammals studied were fin whale, minke whale, pilot whale, white-sided dolphins, harbour porpoise, ringed seal and hooded seal. The study aims at giving a wide scope of the presence of these "new" contaminants in marine mammals in recent time and going back to the 1980s using samples from specimen banks.

Download or read book The Behaviour of Pinnipeds written by D. Renouf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 424 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We teach our students of behavioural science that one first defines a research problem, and then the most appropriate animal is selected to investigate hypotheses. The reverse order of events is improper: a particular class of animals should not be studied for its own sake. In the case of the Pinnipeds (seals, sea lions, fur seals and walruses) the organism and the problem are essentially the same. The research questions presented in this volume in one way or another relate to survival in two worlds, the ocean for foraging, and the terrain at its edge or frozen above it for breeding. The evolution of Pinniped behaviour and the mechanisms which underlie it are a consequence of having to cope with two seemingly incompatible sets of environmental constraints. The physiological adaptations for concomitant functioning in two media with very different physical characteristics have produced correlated behav ioural modifications. The energetic demands of reproduction and foraging are idiosyncratic because each activity occurs on opposite sides of the air/water interface. As a result, the mating system must reconcile aquatic design for such functions as locomotion and thermoregulation, with the terrestrial requirements for successful pupping. Similarly, the ecology of this dual habitat prescribes the rules governing the behaviour of the neonate and its interactions with its mother.

Book Colonisation Migration and Marginal Areas

Download or read book Colonisation Migration and Marginal Areas written by Mariana Mondini and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2017-01-23 with total page 351 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human migration tends to involve more than the odd suitcase or two - we often carry other organisms on our travels, some are deliberately transported, others move by accident. This volume of 12 papers offers a zooarchaeological approach to questions surrounding the nature and extent of human colonization and migration, and the adaptation of humans to new and sometimes extreme or challenging environments. The volume is divided into two parts: Part 1 takes up the theme of Human and Animal Migration and Colonisation. Contributors consider the relationship between human movements and the movements of animals and animal products; case studies look at Neolithic population movements in Oceania, the Norse colonization of Greenland, and the European settlement of Virginia. Part 2 focuses on the topic of Behavioural Variability in the So-Called Marginal Areas. Contributors offer various interpretations of the concept of 'marginality', from climatic extremes of the Arctic cold, and the heat and aridity of western North America, to the geographical remoteness of Patagonia, and the cultural circumstances surrounding the beginnings of transhumant pastoralism in prehistoric southeastern Europe.

Book A Little Less Arctic

    Book Details:
  • Author : Steven H. Ferguson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

Download or read book A Little Less Arctic written by Steven H. Ferguson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-05-30 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Arctic Canada, Hudson Bay is a site of great exploration history, aboriginal culture, and a vast marine wilderness supporting large populations of marine mammals and birds. These include some of the most iconic Arctic animals like beluga, narwhal, bowhead whales, and polar bears. Due to the challenges of conducting field research in this region, some of the mysteries of where these animals move, and how they are able to survive in such seemingly inhospitable, ice-choked habitats are just now being unlocked. For example, are polar bears being replaced by killer whales? This new information could not be more salient, as the Hudson Bay Region is undergoing rapid environmental change due to global warming, as well as increased pressures from industrial development interests. A Little Less Arctic brings together some of the world’s leading Arctic scientists to present the current state of knowledge on the physical and biological characteristics of Hudson Bay.
