Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Maine Species of Altica If we are to retain an American ignite Ill., it seems best, as Fall suggested, to consider the brilliant, coppery' - golden form of the middle Atlantic states, the typical ignite. This is with out doubt the Species Which Chittenden treated as the strawberry flea-beetle (u. S. Bur. Ent. Bul. 23 n. S., p. 70-79, figs. 17 although his description of the coloration of the adult is con fusing, and leads one to suspect that more than one species may have beenat work on the strawberries. Book Carabid Beetles in Their Environments

Download or read book Carabid Beetles in Their Environments written by H.U. Thiele and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 386 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the increasing numbers of research workers and groups of investigators devoting themselves to the ecology of carabids I felt that the time had come to take stock of the existing knowledge in this field and to endeavour to weld my personal results and those of other workers into a comprehensive picture. It was with these aims in mind that the following study was conceived. A further goal was to attempt to show to what extent research on carabids can contribute to the larger fields of research encompassing ecology, ethology and evolution. In my opinion the investigations on carabids permit us to draw conclusions of general applicability and, as such, comparable with those made in recent years upon other groups of animals. I am well aware of the risk involved nowadays in attempting, on one's own, to integrate results from a wide variety of scientific disciplines into a meaningful whole, and for this reason I am always grateful for corrections and for additional information. It is impossible for me to mention by name all of the col leagues who have given me their support in the preparation of the book. Reprints of their publications have been placed at my disposal by almost all of the authors cited, as well as by others whose names and works have been omitted merely in order to prevent the book from taking on encyclopedic pro portions. I am nevertheless indebted to them all for their cooperation.

Book Ritual bones or common waste

Download or read book Ritual bones or common waste written by J. Thilderkvist and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2013-11-01 with total page 43 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the problems of identifying human actions behind finds of bones in settlement archaeology, exemplified with the identification of ritual deposits. In order to formulate a methodological framework for approaching the identification of ritual deposits, different methods are tested on four Early Medieval case studysites: Dongjum and Leeuwarden, two artificial dwelling mounds situated in the then undiked salt marches of the Northern Netherlands, Midlaren, an inland settlement in Drenthe, also in the Northern Netherlands, and finally Uppåkra, a central place in the South of Sweden. The bone fragments from the four materials are studied in a five step process of definition, description, identification, interpretation and explanation. The deposits are discussed with the help of various archaeological, ethnographic and historical sources. The results of the analysis lead to a methodological framework for understanding individual deposits based on a holistic perspective where all information is regarded as potentially valuable, various methods are taken into consideration, and simplification is avoided.

Book Biodiversity associated with the rice field agroecosystem in Asian countries A brief review

Download or read book Biodiversity associated with the rice field agroecosystem in Asian countries A brief review written by Channa N. B. Bambaradeniya and published by IWMI. This book was released on 2004 with total page 29 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This review is intended to bring together the published information available on the biodiversity associated with the rice field agroecosystem, in countries extending across Asia from Sri Lanka to Japan. The intention is to provide a synthesis that would enable us to better appreciate the environmental services and opportunities for biodiversity conservation offered by rice fields, as the additional benefits and contribution of these major food-producing agroecosystems. Since this review is based mainly on published information in the English language public domain, such limitation of the exercise might result in a bias towards those countries where the published and/or accessible information exists. In order to reduce such bias, attempts were made to review unpublished "grey" literature as well, although this was by no means comprehensive.

Book Australia s Biodiversity and Climate Change

Download or read book Australia s Biodiversity and Climate Change written by Will Steffen and published by CSIRO PUBLISHING. This book was released on 2009 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Australia's unique biodiversity is under threat from a rapidly changing climate. The effects of climate change are already discernible at all levels of biodiversity - genes, species, communities and ecosystems. Many of Australia's most valued and iconic natural areas - the Great Barrier Reef, south-western Australia, the Kakadu wetlands and the Australian Alps - are among the most vulnerable. But much more is at stake than saving iconic species or ecosystems. Australia's biodiversity is fundamental to the country's national identity, economy and quality of life. In the face of uncertainty about specific climate scenarios, ecological and management principles provide a sound basis for maximising opportunities for species to adapt, communities to reorganise and ecosystems to transform while maintaining basic functions critical to human society. This innovative approach to biodiversity conservation under a changing climate leads to new challenges for management, policy development and institutional design. This book explores these challenges, building on a detailed analysis of the interactions between a changing climate and Australia's rich but threatened biodiversity. Australia's Biodiversity and Climate Change is an important reference for policy makers, researchers, educators, students, journalists, environmental and conservation NGOs, NRM managers, and private landholders with an interest in biodiversity conservation in a rapidly changing world."--Publisher.
