Book The Dynamics and Use of Lacustrine Ecosystems

Download or read book The Dynamics and Use of Lacustrine Ecosystems written by V. Ilmavirta and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Limnology is increasingly concerned with water supply and the relation of man to aquatic environments. Without the continued availability of pure water, all progress in technology and other fields of human life will be to no avail. The global problems concerning clear water are already extremely pressing. More limnology knowledge is needed to solve these problems. The responsibility of man to save water and to take more intensive care of the environment is raised in many of the papers, in this book. This emphasizes the necessary and unquestionable relevance of limnology to human society. Too often the abuse of water usage reflects the neglect of scientific results. Limnologists have a responsibility to ensure that administrators understand what is going on. The coverage of the book is wide, including papers on microbiology to engineering sciences. The biology of waters is handled at both species and ecosystem levels. The geographical distribution of topics ranges from the tropics to northern temperate areas. In fact, limnology is increasingly becoming a science which is, rightly, relevant to everyday life, not just an academic subject.

Book Lifestyles and Feeding Biology

Download or read book Lifestyles and Feeding Biology written by Martin Thiel and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-16 with total page 593 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second volume in the Natural History of the Crustacea series examines how crustaceans-the different body shapes and adaptations of which are described in volume 1-make a living in the wide range of environments they inhabit, and how they exploit food sources. The contributions in the volume give synthetic overviews of particular lifestyles and feeding mechanisms, and offer a fresh look at crustacean life styles through the technological tools that have been applied to recent crustacean research. These include SEM (scanning electron microscope) techniques, micro-optics, and long-term video recordings that have been used for a variety of behavioral studies. The audience will include not only crustacean biologists but evolutionary ecologists who want to understand the diversification of particular life styles, ecologists who follow the succession of communities, biogeochemists who estimate the role of crustaceans in geochemical fluxes, and biologists with a general interest in crustaceans.

Book Chemical Communication in Crustaceans

Download or read book Chemical Communication in Crustaceans written by Thomas Breithaupt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-11-25 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The crustaceans are ecologically and economically important organisms. They constitute one of the dominant invertebrate groups on earth, particularly within the aquatic realm. Crustaceans include some of the preferred scientific model organism, profitable aquaculture specimen, but also invasive nuisance species threatening native animal communities throughout the world. Chemoreception is the most important sensory modality of crustaceans, acquiring important information about their environment and picking up the chemical signals that mediate communication with conspecifics. Significant advances have been made in our understanding of crustacean chemical communication during the past decade. This includes knowledge about the identity, production, transfer, reception and behavioral function of chemical signals in selected crustacean groups. While it is well known that chemical communication is an integral part of the behavioral ecology of most living organisms, the intricate ways in which organisms allocate chemicals in communication remains enigmatic. How does the environment influence the evolution of chemical communication? What are the environmental cues that induce production or release of chemicals? How do individuals economize production and utilization of chemicals? What is the importance of molecule specificity or mix of a molecule cocktail in chemical communication? What is the role of chemical cues in multimodal communication? How does the ontogenetic stage, the sex or the physiological status of an individual affect its reaction to chemical cues? Many of these questions still represent important challenges to biologists.

Book Birds in Ireland

    Book Details:
  • Author : Clive Hutchinson
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 2010-10-30
  • ISBN : 1408137003
  • Pages : 218 pages

Download or read book Birds in Ireland written by Clive Hutchinson and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2010-10-30 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Birdwatching has become an increasingly popular pastime in Ireland as elsewhere. Nor is all of the birdwatching done by the Irish. Many professional ornithologists from Britain and Western Europe find good reason to study Ireland's birds, as do the numerous birdwatching visitors each year. Clive Hutchinson, a leading Irish ornithologist, has compiled this comprehensive review of birds in the Republic and Northern Ireland to coincide with the 21st anniversary year of the Irish Wildbird Conservancy's foundation and he has had the IWC's active support throughout. Knowledge about the status and distribution of birds in Ireland has increased greatly since the 1960s and this is reflected in the detailed species accounts which form the major part of the book. Factors which led to this greater knowledge, recent changes in bird distribution and status, and reasons for the absence of some species are topics discussed in the book's introductory chapters. Other subjects covered are Ireland's topography, climate and habitats, a review of ornithology and ornithologists in Ireland over the last 100 years, and conservation programmes of more recent times. John Busby's superb illustrations (more than 100) are a feature of the book, helping to set the Irish scene as well as depict its birds.
