Book The Biology of Dragonflies

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Dragonflies: Odonata or Paraneuroptera The principal object with which this volume has been written is to present as full and complete an account of the Biology of the Odonata as it is possible to offer in the present state of our knowledge of these insects. Thus the book is written primarily for biologists rather than systematists. More than ninety per cent. of the papers so far published on the Odonata have been chiefly systematic in their aim. The remainder are principally morphological, and form a valuable though somewhat small collection of facts on which a book of this kind must necessarily be based. During the last three years, I have fortunately been able to undertake a considerable amount of work on the internal anatomy of the Order, thereby not only confirming many points which were more or less in doubt, but also adding some new discoveries, and here and there rectifying errors. Most of this work has not yet been published, and will first see the light in the condensed form in which it appears in the present volume. It is hoped that the method of treatment followed in this book, by which the morphological, phylogenetic and physiological view-points have been correlated, in so far as our present knowledge allows, will enable students of the Odonata to take up any line of research on this interesting Order with a full knowledge of what has already been achieved. To this end, the Bibliography has been practically confined to those publications bearing on the biological study of the Order. Book The Biology of Dragonflies

Download or read book The Biology of Dragonflies written by R. J. Tillyard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-13 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biology of Dragonflies: Odonata or Paraneuroptera The personal influence of de Selys reacted directly upon the next generation of students of the Odonata, and Shewed itself in an era of great activity and advancement in our knowledge of the Order. There were many, including Martin and Ris, who could proudly claim that they had sat at the feet of the master, and had been directly fired with his spirit of enthusiasm. The younger generation of Odonatologists, amongst whom I am proud to include myself, owe to these men what they in their time owed to de Selys. For the past twenty years, with unfailing courtesy and industry, they have placed their unrivalled knowledge at the disposal of all who sought it, and have lit afresh the flame of devotion which we trust will now be passed on to succeeding generations. Mainly owing to their endeavours, the systematic study of the Odonata has been brought up to a level of excellence not exceeded in any other Order; and thus the way is now paved for the biologists of the present and the future to pass on to the deeper studies of the morphology and physiology of the group, not by selecting, at a chance, any common type that happens to be convenient, but with full knowledge of the phylogenetic posit-ion of their regional fauna, and an added certainty as to the degree of specialization to be expected of the types they choose to study. Book Odonata Biology of Dragonflies

Download or read book Odonata Biology of Dragonflies written by B.K. Tyagi and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2007-10-01 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dragonflies (Odonata), represented by over 6000 known species, are unique insects. In more than one feature they differ, at the very first glance, from all other insect superorders including their nearest allies, the mayflies (Ephemeropteroidea). The Zygoptera and Anisoptera, on the other hand, are the dominant groups. Being voracious predators in both immature (aquatic) and adult (aerial) stages they are important elements of all, except the drier (or high alpine) environments in temperate and tropical regions, occupying a position at the apex of the food chain of invertebrate life. Many dragonfly species are tested biological control agents for several disease-transmitting vector mosquitoes, especially Aedes species. They are also ideal organisms to be used as indicators of water pollution and contamination. Many species serve as intermediate hosts of fluke parasites of birds, and thus are important in the transmission of parasitic diseases, especially of domestic poultry and wild ducks. Because of their unique morphology and physiology, dragonflies are used extensively in the study of many biological phenomena. All these subjects are discussed in this unique book comprising twenty three articles written by expert odonatologists from different parts of the world. The book is written in a lucid and comprehensible language, and will likely be useful to both the professional and amateur alike.

Book The Dragonflies of Europe

Download or read book The Dragonflies of Europe written by R.R. Askew and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-10-25 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the only book written in English to cover the entire European fauna, comprising 124 species of resident damselfly (Zygoptera) and dragonfly (Anisoptera), illustrated on the 30 plates of 219 colour figures. In most cases, both sexes as well as important variants are depicted, all enlarged. In his Foreword to this revised edition, Professor Philip Corbet, Past-President of the Worldwide Dragonfly Association and doyen of British odonatists, states that, as a standard reference work, “it will continue to contribute importantly to the progress of odonatology.” The author has made a few corrections to his original text, which covered 114 species of Odonata breeding in Europe, and has added a new Preface and an updating Supplement. The Introduction, which is largely unchanged, includes chapters on History; Life History; the Adult Dragonfly; Distribution; Morphology of the Adult Dragonfly; a complete, updated Check List; and Keys to the suborders and families. The Systematic section gives keys to the genera and species, with clear descriptions and details of the biology, flight periods, and distribution of all species found in Europe, with distribution maps showing national boundaries. This is now followed by the Supplement, in which Dr Askew has added a further ten resident species, including one new to science, and several adventives. It also provides new information under the following headings: Nomenclature; Orthography; Thermoregulation; American species observed in Europe; Accidental Introductions into Europe; Other species newly recognized in Europe; Species new to the British Isles; Expansion of recorded ranges within Europe; Other new distribution records; and Contraction of recorded ranges. The author goes on to list major European and national literature on the Odonata published since 1988. There are numerous line-drawings throughout the text and over 100 new references to the European literature have been added to the supplement bringing the total to over 650. The book concludes with a new Index to English and scientific names, incorporating all species, subspecies and synonyms cited in the revised text. There are two plates of colour photographs showing biology and habitats and the author has added a further colour plate to his original 29 plates of adult insects, depicting five of the new European species and one from North America. In its new, slightly-reduced, softback format, this classic work, which has already sold 3000 copies, will be more practical in the field and should prove extremely popular with British and Continental odonatists.
