Book excerpt: In 1947, 4,000 motorcycle hobbyists converged on Hollister, California. As images of dissolute bikers graced the pages of newspapers and magazines, the three-day gathering sparked the growth of a new subculture while also touching off national alarm. In the years that followed, the stereotypical leather-clad biker emerged in the American consciousness as a menace to law-abiding motorists and small towns. Yet a few short decades later, the motorcyclist, once menacing, became mainstream. To understand this shift, Randy D. McBee narrates the evolution of motorcycle culture since World War II. Along the way he examines the rebelliousness of early riders of the 1940s and 1950s, riders' increasing connection to violence and the counterculture in the 1960s and 1970s, the rich urban bikers of the 1990s and 2000s, and the factors that gave rise to a motorcycle rights movement. McBee's fascinating narrative of motorcycling's past and present reveals the biker as a crucial character in twentieth-century American life.

Book Hoodlum Movies

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Stanfield
  • Publisher : Rutgers University Press
  • Release : 2018-07-13
  • ISBN : 0813599059
  • Pages : 215 pages

Download or read book Hoodlum Movies written by Peter Stanfield and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2018-07-13 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From The Wild Angels in 1966 until its conclusion in 1972, the cycle of outlaw motorcycle films contained forty-odd formulaic examples. All but one were made by independent companies that specialized in producing exploitation movies for drive-ins, neighborhood theaters, and rundown inner city theaters. Despised by critics, but welcomed by exhibitors denied first-run films, these cheaply and quickly produced movies were made to appeal to audiences of mobile youths. The films are repetitive, formulaic, and eminently forgettable, but there is a story to tell about all of the above, and it is one worth hearing. Hoodlum Movies is not only about the films, its focus is on why and how these films were made, who they were made for, and how the cycle developed through the second half of the 1960s and came to a shuddering halt in 1972.

Book excerpt: Owen “Onyx” Walsh tried to stop me from being great. Pity he didn’t know I'm more determined than a bull. He’s a dream-blocking jerk and I can’t stand his stupid freckled face. We despise each other, that much is clear. That’s why I’m spun confused when he starts looking at me like he doesn’t. I’m not a size two with a tiny waist, nor do I have bright blue eyes or perky tits—you know, the type he loves hanging around—so why does he want to be around me all of a sudden? Oh, right, because I tried to be nice to him once and made the mistake of fibbing to my family that he’s my boyfriend. Now he’s like a plague I can’t get rid of—not that I’ve been trying too hard. I tried to stop him from winning my heart. Pity I didn’t know he's more determined than a starving lion. Book excerpt: It all started with a failed engine… I’ve seen them around. Preppy, sun-kissed Californians zigzagging about Denver in funky Jeep Wranglers. Ignored them. Until one of them walks through the doors of The Metal House Auto Repair Shop. Sure, he’s good-looking or whatever, but hideously dressed, a bit nerdy, and such a far cry from my type that it’s not even worth mentioning. So why can’t I stop staring? Captivated. Confused. And why does he keep staring? Like I’m a dream come to life. He offers me a deal too good to pass up, a deal that will get me one step closer to my dream to travel the world. I couldn’t have anticipated the turn my life would take when I said yes to Alec Vaughn. Tags: opposites attract, interracial romance

Book excerpt: In all my years as a scientist, I never believed the experiments I was involved in would lead to so many people dying. I've even put my only son at risk. Our lives are inexorably changed, coursing down a path that may see the very destruction of us all, should this virogene escape the confines of its sealed environment. All my background, both moral and academic, tell me what I am doing is wrong, but how am I possibly going to stop it now? Can it be stopped? Will all this end in the loss of more lives? Cody Jenkins' father, Ben, is a prominent biophysicist working under a government contract for a private foundation. His realm of expertise lies in the development of biological compounds that will lead to the creation of a genetically engineered super virus. Once created, however, the virus proves so deadly that it defies all biological and chemical means of slowing its devastating effects on its host subjects. Because the research project that results in the discovery of the virus is government funded, the military believe they have the right to it, regardless of what the virus would mean for humanity; the Corsican Brotherhood wants to steal it for profit-thus begins a battle of wit, intrigue, and violence in which Cody becomes an innocent pawn.

Book Riding with Rilke

Download or read book Riding with Rilke written by Ted Bishop and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2006-05-09 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English professor and motorcycle enthusiast Ted Bishop is taking one last ride before fall term when his bike vibrates out of control and he is flung into a ditch, breaking his back and collapsing his lungs. With limited mobility, Ted finally has time to savour the reading experience. He begins writing about his crash, realizing that two worlds had come together when his head hit the pavement. The more he thinks about it, the more it seems that archival work is the inverse, not the opposite, of motorcycling. Ultimately, what surrounds both reader and rider is silence. In Riding with Rilke, Ted Bishop takes us on the road through some of the richest landscapes in North America and Europe, with numerous stops along the way. Whether describing the archival jolt of holding Virginia Woolf's suicide note in the British Library or the outlaw thrill of cruising Main Street in small-town America on a bike nicknamed “Il Mostro,” Bishop tells a story filled with insight and humour.

Book Outlaw Biker

Download or read book Outlaw Biker written by Richard "Deadeye" Hayes and published by Citadel Press. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this no-holds-barred memoir, a legendary biker recounts his life of sex, drugs, rock & roll and lots of broken laws. Here is the true-life story of Richard “Deadeye” Hayes in all its bad-ass, balls-to-the-wall glory. This is a man who stole a machine gun before he was seven and lost his left eye when a good friend shot him in the face. As a member—and then president—of the infamous Los Valientes Motorcycle Club, he broke more laws and had more fun than any six of the coolest guys you know. One of the last true Outlaw Bikers, Deadeye knows what it means to be a man, take shit from no one, and have tattoos that actually say something. Riding, drug dealing, and sending men to the hospital with his bare hands, Deadeye made himself a legend among bikers—all the while making sure his daughters never got mixed up with guys like him. “This may just be the best book ever written by an author who's been shot twice, stabbed once, and bitten by a rattlesnake!” —Geoffrey Leavenworth, author of Isle of Misfortune

Book Seventy Years on a Motorcycle

Download or read book Seventy Years on a Motorcycle written by Herbert Foster Gunnison and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2003-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No comments on Gunnison's work are complete if they don't zero in on his style, which is lively, engaging, and moves through complex interrelated ideas with grace and ease. His passions for life and faith in the sublime are truly refreshing and there are quotable gems galore: "motorcycles are the truth about speed" and "love is a conspiracy against the ordinary" are typical. When Herb is sufficiently provoked he grabs a sledgehammer from the arsenal of his intellect as in the following rejoinder to the news that atomic scientists think nuclear explosions are "beautiful" beautiful my ass that's my philosophy When appropriate , Herb can be lyrical. "Oh how I love to ride on drizzly summer days tucked in behind a misty windscreen, insulated from the moist wind chill by a rainsuit, listening to the song of a perfectly tuned engine, absorbed in the rush of my solitary world lonely unassailable, aching with day long joy as I watch the earth renew its sweet mysterious self around me." The word is coming in over and over that this book is an absorbing read. This is not to say it is lacking in serious cultural or personal psychological issues. Herb makes an inspired case for the distractive and self-deadening results of excessive worship of technology in the popular culture. Two attempts to break the coast-to-coast speed record on a motorcycle to celebrate his 45th birthday and 7500 mile motorcycle journey around the U.S. to celebrate his 75th birthday becomes frames and metaphors. Beneath all the excitement Gunnison is burdened with deep psychological problems. He was the third generation offspring of an extraordinarily wealthy lineage. His father, uncle and grandfather were all multi-millionaires. Herb's identity problems set in during adolescence when he got the idea that he was expected to WOW the crowd after three impossible acts to follow. For seventy years he sublimated his identity problem on fast road and dirt bikes and early indication are (Thank God!) that this book fortunately is about to bring him full circle because motorcyclists are gobbling it up and sooner or later the Holier than Thou Group is going to ruefully admit that the motorcyclists they look down on are living in Paradise. Every purchase of this book. Is a vote for our respectability.

Book Need for the Bike

Download or read book Need for the Bike written by Paul Fournel and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 2021-01-04 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book like no other, Paul Fournel's Need for the Bike conducts readers into a very personal world of communication and connection whose center is the bicycle, and where all people and things pass by way of the bike. In compact and suggestive prose, Fournel conveys the experience of cycling--from the initial charm of early outings to the dramas of the devoted cyclist. An extended meditation on cycling as a practice of life, the book recalls a country doctor who will not anesthetize the young Fournel after he impales himself on a downtube shifter, speculates about the difference between animals that would like to ride bikes (dogs, for instance) and those that would prefer to watch (cows, marmots), and reflects on the fundamental absurdity of turning over the pedals mile after excruciating mile. At the same time, Fournel captures the sound, smell, feel, and language of the reality and history of cycling, in the mountains, in the city, escaping the city, in groups, alone, suffering, exhausted, exhilarated. In his attention to the pleasures of cycling, to the specific "grain" of different cycling experiences, and to the inscription of these experiences in the body's cycling memory, Fournel portrays cycling as a descriptive universe, colorful, lyrical, inclusive, exclusive, complete.
