Book excerpt: From the revolutionary mind of television's legendary mad genius, a story of money, sex, greed, revenge, murder -- and reality TV The year is 2012, and as the Most Famous Television Producer in the World is walking down a wintry New York City block, he's accosted by a homeless-looking cripple who, like everyone else, insists he has the formula for the greatest TV show of all time. As it turns out, he does: Contestants will compete for one hundred million dollars. If they win, they're rich. If they lose, they face immediate on-camera execution. As the Producer begins scheming to steal the idea and revive his fading career, The Big Question introduces the extraordinary characters who will ultimately become the show's contestants -- a brilliantly rendered, Dickensian cast that includes the seventy-something Vera Bundle, with a taste for scotch and encyclopedias; Arthur Durch, a convicted sex offender-turned-relationship therapist; Retta Mae Wagons, a sixteen-year-old prostitute with an IQ of 170 and an ex-con-turned-Muslim fundamentalist boyfriend who doesn't appreciate her; Billy Constable, the Kentucky rube who gets off a bus in New York and promptly finds himself in trouble with the Mob; and Father Brady, the devout Catholic priest with a mortifying secret to hide at any cost. As the first episode is broadcast live in front of millions, the audience, the cast, and the crew behind the scenes do the unthinkable: they sit and watch, rapt and glassy-eyed, as the final contestant left on stage meets an unimaginable fate. To say The Big Question is a novel of greed and immorality would be putting it lightly. But to read this book without laughing out loud at every page would be impossible. This is more than just a funny book, though. With uncanny precision and razor-sharp wit, the inimitable Chuck Barris reveals the inconceivable lengths to which people will go for those priceless fifteen minutes, the fascination we have with the little black box in our homes -- and the horrifying deeds done in the name of entertainment.

Book excerpt: It is 1955 in Las Vegas. Sammy and Satchmo are headlining the big hotels - where the casino operators and the color bar say a black man can't buy a drink or a meal or a room. Until now. The Chicago mob man Mo Weiner is bankrolling ex-boxer Worthless Worthington Lee and the city's first all-black hotel-casino. The Ivory Coast is rising up from the dust, on the wrong side of town. And out of the shadows steps Deacon, a white horn player with a dark past and a genius for jazz. Mo mistakes him for a hitman. Worthless takes him for a friend. Anita, the mixed-race beauty he falls for, wants him for herself. And Haney, the corrupt and racist copy who runs this hot desert oasis of sin and sand, wants him rubbed out. Deacon is holding a dangerous hand, and a dangerous secret, spun inside a deadly web of deceit and double-crosses. The Ivory Coast is coming, rushing this sprawling drama toward the last Sunday in May, when the whole town will be black and white and blood-red all over... A suspenseful first novel of remarkable imagination, scope and energy, The Ivory Coast is impossible to ignore and, once begun, impossible to resist.

Book excerpt: Blending fact with fiction in this masterful historical novel, National Book Award and Pulitzer Prize winner Wallace Stegner retells the story of Joe Hill—the Wobbly bard and labor activist who became the stuff of legend when, in 1915, he was executed for the alleged murder of a Salt Lake City businessman. Organizer, agitator, "Labor's Songster"—a rebel from the skin inwards, with an absolute faith in the One Big Union—Joe Hill fought tirelessly in the frequently violent battles between organized labor and industry. But though songs and stories still vaunt him, and his legend continues to inspire those who feel the injustices he fought against, Joe Hill may not have been a perfectly saintly crusader—and may have been motivated by impulses darker than the search for justice. Joe Hill is a full-bodied portrait of both the man and the myth: from his entrance into the short-lived Industrial Workers of the World union, the most militant organization in the history of American labor, to his trial, imprisonment, and final martyrdom. His famous last words: "Don't waste time mourning. Organize."

Book excerpt: The story of Joseph “Yellow Kid” Weil, a man who could—and often did—pull off scams to outshine The Sting. In his long career as a confidence man, Joseph “Yellow Kid” Weil swindled the public of more than eight million dollars and established the reputation for robbery and trickery. Always beating the police at their own game, “Yellow Kid” used phony oil deals, women, fixed races, and an endless list of other tricks to best an increasingly gullible public. One day, he was Dr. Henri Reuel, a noted geologist who traveled around and told his hosts that he was a representative for a big oil company—all the while draining them of the cash they gave him to “invest in fuel.” The next day, he was director of the Elysium Development Company, promising land to innocent believers while robbing them in recording and abstract fees. Or he was a chemist par excellence who had discovered how to copy dollar bills; promising to increase your fortune, he would multiply your bills—then take the booty once the police arrived. Originally published in 1948, here is Weil’s true and amazing story, with a smart and witty Afterword by none other than Nobel Laureate Saul Bellow, who profiled “Yellow Kid” for The Reporter in 1956. It is undeniable proof that “Yellow Kid” was the con man par excellence—the virtuoso scam artist, bar none.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revised and Updated Edition Fleeing the ice clad fjords of his native Greenland just ahead of greedy kinsman who would keep his inheritance from him, Sigtrygg Thorgilsson, half-breed grandson of the storied explorer Leif Eiriksson, seeks his fortune on the shores of North America, last glimpsed by his grandfather some forty years before. Making his way across uncharted waters with a hastily assembled crew of untried men, he quickly learns that the inhabitants of the new land are less than pleased by their presence and that their survival will depend on their ability to carve a place for themselves in the midst of their skeptical hosts. But risking life and limb in a desperate gamble to prove their worth will not be enough as Sigtrygg’s angry kinsmen unexpectedly arrive on the coast to dispute what he has won. Then only the shrewd counsel of an aged viking, and the passion of the woman Sigtrygg left behind, offer a way out of the burgeoning blood feud that threatens to engulf them all—as storm clouds gather in the distance and a defeated enemy prepares to take his revenge. A novel of Vikings and Indians in pre-Columbian North America, The King of Vinland’s Saga reprises the failed settlement history of the Norse on the edge of the North Atlantic in the eleventh century—as Europe lay mired in medieval darkness, its inhabitants still ignorant of the places and peoples that lay just beyond their reach. Book Review: Just put down the above book. If this was your first endeavor, then I am eagerly anticipating your second. The book was fantastic! It was as enjoyable to me as “The Golden Warrior”, “Musashi”, and “With Fire and Sword” and other historical fiction novels that grace my bookshelves (many of which purchased through your recommendation on Amazon). It is nice to read a book and get mad, frustrated, etc. at the characters. Thanks again for a pleasurable read! Pete Giorgianni
