Book The Big Bang of Space Governance

Download or read book The Big Bang of Space Governance written by Eytan Tepper and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This thesis investigates the nature and architecture of space governance and how it evolved and can and will evolve further, given the absence of a global government or supreme authority. The thesis demonstrates that after an initial period of successful development of space governance featuring institutions building and the adoption of space law treaties, from the early days in the late 1950s to the mid-1970s, space governance, as developed by those institutions, has largely been stagnated. The consequence is that even the most important issues, e.g., space debris, militarization, and utilization of space natural resources, are left insufficiently addressed. The thesis follows with analysis of the structure of space governance and reviews theories of decentralized governance, aiming to suggest a feasible, effective and dynamic model for space governance that will enable a continuous evolution thereof. The thesis is therefore about the architecture of global space governance and not about the content of the norms. The thesis concludes that the only way to break the governance gridlock is by space governance becoming polycentric, allowing it to evolve in a decentralized and incremental manner. Thus, a separate forum for each sub-issue-areas (i.e., specific issue-areas within the issue-area of space activities, such as militarization of space and space debris), led by stakeholders (active actors) and experts, would establish forums, create rules for that issue, and possibly monitor their application. The aggregate of all forums’ work would be feasible and efficient governance, flexible to adapt to changes. In fact, space governance is already on track to become polycentric, increasingly and inevitably, as stakeholders and experts establish forums that suggest, adopt or push for rules and standards. The result is a gradual emergence of numerous decision-making centers (governance centers) producing numerous, partially overlapping, issue-specific regimes. Still, further action is required to transform space governance to a polycentric system. A polycentric structure would enable the development of governance under the existing constraints that prevent it from developing otherwise. While adverse effects may be associated with polycentric governance systems, the advantages of polycentric governance exceed the adverse effects, which may be further mitigated in ways, which the thesis discusses. In terms of policy recommendations, the thesis suggests that instead of trying to fix the monocentric system, the policy should be to embrace and facilitate a decentralized, polycentric governance system, i.e., to relay to and rely on the work of separate governance centers; to divert governance-building efforts to be invested in support of the establishment and operation of these governance centers; to acknowledge the major role of stakeholders and experts, i.e., in the linkage between activities and voice; and to mitigate the adverse effects of polycentric governance. After presenting the case for polycentric space governance, the thesis continues to analyse the governance of two sub-issue-areas: space natural resources and space warfare. The normative recommendations for space governance may also suit the governance of other issue-areas in global affairs"--

Book Global Space Governance An International Study

Download or read book Global Space Governance An International Study written by Ram S. Jakhu and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 784 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the findings, conclusions and recommendations of the Global Space Governance study commissioned by the 2014 Montreal Declaration that called upon civil society, academics, governments, the private sector, and other stakeholders to undertake an international interdisciplinary study. The study took three years to complete. It examines the drivers of space regulations and standards, key regulatory problems, and especially addresses possible improvements in global space governance. The world's leading experts led the drafting of chapters, with input from academics and knowledgeable professionals in the public and private sectors, intergovernmental organizations, and nongovernmental organizations from all the regions of the world with over 80 total participants. This book and areas identified for priority action are to be presented to the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space and it is hoped will be considered directly or indirectly at the UNISPACE+50 event in Vienna, Austria, in 2018. The report, a collective work of all the contributors, includes objective analysis and frank statements expressed without pressure of political, national, and occupational concerns or interest. It is peer-reviewed and carefully edited to ensure its accuracy, preciseness, and readability. It is expected that the study and derivative recommendations will form the basis for deliberations and decisions at international conferences and meetings around the world on the theme of global space governance. This will hopefully include future discussion at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Who is responsible if one of the nearly 6,000 satellites circling our planet malfunctions and causes damage? What law governs an individual's, company's, or government's actions in space? How can we ensure Earth's safety as we venture farther out into the universe? These are just a few of the questions answered in The Future of Governance in Space. From the satellites that power our communications to the exploration of the final frontier, the intersection of space and technology has never been more important. Yet not every situation is covered by current law, and there are many legal issues the world will need to work out sooner rather than later. In this book, you will learn: The origins of international space law How other areas of law have influenced current space legislation How space law affects everything in your life, from communication to technology Why more action concerning space governance is essential In The Future of Governance in Space, author Lauren Peterson illustrates the challenges the future holds for legal issues in space, and why more definitive legislation is needed to preserve our technological future. If you love space, technology, or imagining how the future will look, you'll love this book.

Download or read book Dismantling the Big Bang written by Dr. John Hartnett and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2005-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why did Ptolemy's theory cause problems for the church? What is the big secret concerning the "?Age" of the earth? Why do many scientists reject the use of design in explaining origins? The seemingly absurd idea that all matter, energy, space, and time once exploded from a point of extreme density has captured the imagination of scientists and laypersons for decades. The big bang has provided a central teaching for the eons of time of "cosmic evolution", undermining the history and cosmology of the Bible. It is a theory that fails, even violating the very physical laws on which it is purportedly based. In this easy-to-read format, authors Alex Williams and John Hartnett explode this naturalistic explanation for the universe, and show that the biblical model provides a far better explanation of our origins. This fully indexed, illustrated analysis of the big bang theory is an invaluable help in understanding and countering a world view that is as chaotic and destructive as its name implies.

Book excerpt: This book delves into the complexities of space governance, offering innovative solutions for a sustainable future. From the pressing issues facing space governance today to creating a consensus on responsibility, ethics, and frameworks, we aim to answer key questions: (i) What are the current challenges? (ii) How do satellites impact society? (iii) What are the potential negative consequences? From communication and early warning systems to global broadcasting and navigation, satellite technology plays a pivotal role in our daily lives. However, this reliance also exposes vulnerabilities, as any disruption to satellite systems could have disastrous consequences across multiple industries. The rapid development of satellite technology, including drones and UAVs, has ushered in a new era of exploration and exploitation. Yet, this progress brings with it new challenges, particularly in terms of governance. As satellites transcend national boundaries, the dynamics of space governance become increasingly complex, with various entities pursuing their own interests without always considering the broader implications. This book bridges the knowledge gap surrounding space technology and highlights the need for increased governance frameworks, data protection, and disciplined deployment. By addressing issues of control, privacy, and security, we pave the way for a more sustainable and responsible approach to space exploration. Join us on this journey as we navigate the evolving landscape of space governance and chart a course towards a brighter future for all.

Book Commercial Space Exploration

Download or read book Commercial Space Exploration written by Jai Galliott and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-09 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Not since man set foot on the moon over four decades ago has there been such passion and excitement about space exploration. This enthusiasm and eagerness has been spurred on by the fact that for the first time since the very beginning of the space age, space travel is no longer limited to an elite group of highly trained and well-disciplined military officers and test pilots. Instead, we must understand that the possibility of commercial space travel is already on our horizon and that it comes with a number of significant practical and moral challenges. Our level of scientific development and ability to influence international affairs and policy confers upon us an obligation to study the ethical, legal and social considerations associated with space exploration and understanding the potential consequences from the beginning is critical. This volume provides the first comprehensive and unifying analysis concerning the rise of private space exploration, with a view toward developing policy that may influence real-world decision making. The plethora of questions demanding serious attention - privatisation and commercialisation, the impact on the environment, health futures, risk assessment, responsibility and governance - are directly addressed in this scholarly work.

Book The Multi level Governance of Space Mining

Download or read book The Multi level Governance of Space Mining written by Antonino Salmeri and published by Kluwer Law International B.V.. This book was released on 2023-02-07 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aerospace Law and Policy Series, Volume 24 Space mining holds the potential to revolutionize the space sector, but whether this revolution will be for good or for worse depends on how it will be governed. Under the right framework, space resource activities can enable a new era of prosperous and sustainable space exploration. But with the wrong rules (or lack thereof), they have the potential to destabilize the peaceful and cooperative uses of space. This book provides an in-depth analysis of how the systemic nature of international law, existing provisions of international space law and a growing number of national legislations are shaping the multi-level governance of space mining, including an unprecedented assessment of possible adjudication and enforcement options. The author investigates the multi-level framework of space law provision by provision, foregrounding relevant implications for the governance of space mining. Questions addressed include the following: Which national and international provisions govern the conduct of space resource activities? Are these provisions sufficient, and can they be enforced? How can we evolve the existing framework to govern large-scale, long-term space resource activities? What practical lessons can be learnt from comparable regulatory regimes governing the sea, telecommunications and Antarctica? The author moves from general to particular, beginning with the status of international law as a legal order and ending with the specific options available for enforcing norms applicable to space mining. The book concludes by evaluating the tenure of the current governance system and proposing three pragmatic correctives to stabilize it in the short, medium, and long term. Professionals and academics involved or interested in space mining will find this book indispensable. It will provide them with a full and clear picture of the regulatory status quo, as well as with expert advice on how to navigate the complex dynamics of contemporary policymaking efforts in this area. Space mining operators can further use this book to understand the implications of domestic and international provisions applicable to their activities. Finally, regulators and policymakers can leverage the analysis conducted in this book to identify the key aspects to be addressed for the safe, sustainable, rational and peaceful conduct of space resource activities in accordance with international law and as the province of all humankind.

Book Building Blocks for the Development of an International Framework for the Governance of Space Resource Activities

Download or read book Building Blocks for the Development of an International Framework for the Governance of Space Resource Activities written by Olavo de O. Bittencourt Neto and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is available digitally as an Open Access resource at www.boomdenhaag.nl. Click HERE to access the content. The development of space resources activities is happening now. In the absence of a clear framework to govern these activities there is a need to formulate such a framework in line with existing treaty obligations, in order to enable, support and coordinate the use of space resources in a manner that is acceptable for all stakeholders. This book provides a unique and comprehensive coverage of the work of The Hague International Space Resources Governance Group, established in 2016 with the purpose of assessing the need and laying the groundwork for such a framework. The Commentary contains the text, explanation, legal basis and alternatives discussed for each of the 20 Building Blocks that were adopted by the Working Group in 2019 and that could potentially form part of a future governance framework for space resource activities. The book is a useful reference tool for States, international organisations, industry, space agencies, scientists, academics and students in space law and policy interested in this new era of use and exploration of outer space.
