Book The Atom of the Universe

Download or read book The Atom of the Universe written by Dominique Lambert and published by . This book was released on 2016-07-04 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book takes us from the early childhood to the last days of George Lemaîitre, the man behind the theory of the primeval atom, now better known as Big Bang theory. But who was George Lemaître? A clergyman, a genius astronomer, an audacious cosmologist, a computer enthusiast ahead of his time, a professor with his head in the clouds, a bon vivant mathematician and gourmand? Dominique Lambert's book peels away these layers, chapter by chapter, from the adventures of a boy from Charleroi (Belgium) who became Monseigneur Lemaître as well as his impact on contemporary cosmology. The reader will follow Lemaitre's works through the course of his life, discovering along the way his involvement with the Chinese student community, his complex relationship with the Vatican, his deep devotion to the University of Louvain, his friendship with figures such as Einstein and Eddington, his adventures through the two World Wars, his travels in America, his curious interest in Molière and his deep faith lived through the 'Amis de Jésus'. The resulting picture is of a remarkable figure who was sensitive, creative, meticulous and, paradoxically, both discreet and exuberant while also being a man of exceptional integrity who reconciled his science with his faith. More than a book on one person, this biography of Lemaître offers the key to a better understanding of the profound changes which took place in the fields of science, faith and academic life in the last century. Preface by P.J.E. Peebles

Book The Big Bang Revolutionaries

Download or read book The Big Bang Revolutionaries written by Jean-Pierre Luminet and published by . This book was released on 2024-04-23 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many widely read scientific writers of our day mistakenly attribute the concepts of the expanding universe and the Big Bang to Edwin Hubble and Albert Einstein. Hubble did provide evidence of an expanding universe, but he neither discovered such evidence nor accepted the radical idea that space itself was expanding. As for Einstein, he held out against the idea of an expanding universe for more than a decade, and ceased working in the field as soon as he had to amend his view. The real heroes of the Big Bang revolution are the Russian Alexander Friedmann and Belgian priest Georges Lemaître. That they are virtually unknown to the general public is one thing. That their contribution is underestimated by astrophysicists and cosmologists is another, for the concepts they promulgated are among the most remarkable achievements of twentieth-century science. The Big Bang Revolutionaries amends the record, telling the remarkable story of how these two men, joined by the mischievous George Gamow and in the face of conventional scientific wisdom, offered a compelling view of a singular creation of the universe in what Lemaître termed a "primeval atom."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept and institution of priesthood in the Catholic Church has been the subject of serious challenge not only since the time of the Protestant Reformation but also, more recently, from within the Catholic Church, as the Second Vatican Council (1962-1965) and theologians afterward have reconsidered the place and function of priests in relation to both bishops and laity. In dialogue with those challenges, and by means of research into Scripture and the theological tradition--patristic, medieval, and modern--the author of this book considers classic images of priests and priestly ministry as a way of recovering an understanding of the priesthood that is at once both biblically and theological sound.

Book Matter and Spirit in the Universe

Download or read book Matter and Spirit in the Universe written by Helge Kragh and published by Imperial College Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cosmology is an unusual science with an unusual history. This book examines the formative years of modern cosmology from the perspective of its interaction with religious thought. As the first study of its kind, it reveals how closely associated the development of cosmology has been with considerations of a philosophical and religious nature. From nineteenth-century thermodynamics to the pioneering cosmological works of Georges LemaŒtre and Arthur E Milne, religion has shaped parts of modern cosmological theory. By taking the religious component seriously, a new and richer history of cosmology emerges.

Book THE ULTIMATE INTERPRETATION

Download or read book THE ULTIMATE INTERPRETATION written by XING FOO and published by JINSONG ZHENG. This book was released on with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deciphers the three ultimate questions in human philosophy from a new and simplified perspective. It opens up the underlying logical relationship between life, the universe, and human society. It completely overturns the traditional scientific perception and understanding of happiness. The book redefines the nature of organisms and the essence of life by peeling back the layers of contradictions in the evolution of organisms and the evolution of human civilization. This book proposes the hypothesis of female and male particles, basexon and baseyon, that can reach the upper bound of human imagination to reinterpret the natural significance of several existing scientific cognitions. The analysis of the complexity trap of current scientific cognition is also included. The book proposes two major visions for transforming human society: forgetting about learning and the trust revolution. These visions serve as a guide for the reader's thoughts and actions on how to achieve a true sense of freedom and happiness. The book contains numerous interesting and subversive ideas, which are discussed at length throughout the text. Due to space limitations, only a few examples can be listed here. - Biological nature is a strategic choice for survival, reproduction, security, and connection in terms of energy balance, intake, and lock-in. - Voluntary mutation is a strategy for trial and error and preparation for the next evolutionary leap. - Biological inheritance and passive variation are determined by four stratified genes, which are sequentially influenced by the environment. - The physical form of life is characterized by a boundary that separates the inside from the outside. The crucial phases of the birth of life forms, both biotic and abiotic, involve material combination and aggregation. - The use of language and thinking by humans has advantages during the connections among humans, but it also brings the disadvantage of complexity and reliance on shifting trust mechanisms. - Organisms follow a biological constitution in the pursuit of bioactivity, their origin similar to the law of abiogenesis in the cosmos.

Book Peregrinations of an Inquisitive Mind

Download or read book Peregrinations of an Inquisitive Mind written by R. C. Ropp and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009 with total page 450 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK "Pereginations of an Inquisitive Mind" In writing this book, I have addressed events that occurred in the past, my perspective of our current society here in the United states at this moment of time and have also focused on the future in terms of how Mankind will be able to travel to the nearest Galaxies. I have described the past in terms of stories I heard concerning the sojourn of the Ropp family in Shelby County, Indiana. I have done this because I believe that readers will be interested in the farming society of the 1880's and early 1900's. My presentation is meant to show how life in the farming community of that time occurred and was conducted. This lifestyle was prevalent throughout the mid-west at that time. I also addressed the past concerning the current thinking of how Man developed and progressed to our present-day civilization. I became interested in the inventions and technology that radically changed our society and have presented a history of the cathode ray tube which made color television possible. Today, this information medium is used as the major mode of communication in every household. I have also presented a history of artificial lighting because of the salient effect it has had on our mode of living throughout the world. This led me to research and determine what I regard as the most important inventions and advances in technology and medicine. Their impact has radically changed our lives as well as our lifetimes. I have also given my views concerning the present state of affairs in the present-day American society. I hope that this disarray of conflicting viewpoints will soon be adjusted to a more equitable state of affairs. Finally, I became interested in what we know concerning the Universe and what inventions and technology will be required in order to visit outlying Galaxies. I also addressed how these hypothetical inventions will affect the World Society when they become a reality. R.C. Ropp - November 2008
