Book Development of the Bicycle Compatibility Index

Download or read book Development of the Bicycle Compatibility Index written by and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research effort was undertaken to develop a methodology for deriving a bicycle compatibility index (BCI) that could be used by practitioners to evaluate the capability of specific roadways to accommodate both motorists and bicyclists. The BCI methodology was developed for urban and suburban roadway segments (i.e., midblock locations that are exclusive of major intersections) and incorporated those variables which bicyclists typically use to assess the "bicycle friendliness" of a roadway (e.g., curb lane width, traffic volume, and vehicle speeds). The developed tool will allow practitioners to evaluate existing facilities in order to determine what improvements may be required as well as to determine the geometric and operational requirements for new facilities. Also discussed in this report is the application of the developed methodology used for rating midblock segments to intersections and an assessment of the validity of such an approach for rating the bicycle compatibility of intersections.

Book The Bicycle Compatibility Index

Download or read book The Bicycle Compatibility Index written by David L. Harkey and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Determining how existing traffic operations and geometric conditions impact a bicyclist's decision to use or not use a specific roadway is the first step in determining the bicycle compatibility index (BCI) that could be used by practitioners to evaluate the capability of specific roadways to accommodate both motorists and bicyclists. This report focuses on the application of the BCI methodology and the use of the Microsoft Excel workbook on the enclosed diskette. The report includes a brief summary of the model development, data requirements for using the model, a detailed discussion of the workbook, and numerous examples applied to real-world problems.

Book Traffic Engineering Handbook

Download or read book Traffic Engineering Handbook written by ITE (Institute of Transportation Engineers) and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2016-01-19 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Get a complete look into modern traffic engineering solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is a newly revised text that builds upon the reputation as the go-to source of essential traffic engineering solutions that this book has maintained for the past 70 years. The updated content reflects changes in key industry standards, and shines a spotlight on the needs of all users, the design of context-sensitive roadways, and the development of more sustainable transportation solutions. Additionally, this resource features a new organizational structure that promotes a more functionally-driven, multimodal approach to planning, designing, and implementing transportation solutions. A branch of civil engineering, traffic engineering concerns the safe and efficient movement of people and goods along roadways. Traffic flow, road geometry, sidewalks, crosswalks, cycle facilities, shared lane markings, traffic signs, traffic lights, and more—all of these elements must be considered when designing public and private sector transportation solutions. Explore the fundamental concepts of traffic engineering as they relate to operation, design, and management Access updated content that reflects changes in key industry-leading resources, such as the Highway Capacity Manual (HCM), Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), AASSHTO Policy on Geometric Design, Highway Safety Manual (HSM), and Americans with Disabilities Act Understand the current state of the traffic engineering field Leverage revised information that homes in on the key topics most relevant to traffic engineering in today's world, such as context-sensitive roadways and sustainable transportation solutions Traffic Engineering Handbook, Seventh Edition is an essential text for public and private sector transportation practitioners, transportation decision makers, public officials, and even upper-level undergraduate and graduate students who are studying transportation engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research was undertaken to provide additional tools to evaluate the suitability of an on-street bicycle facility for both motorists and cyclists, especially as the tools apply to the approval or rejection of bicycle facility retrofits. The research also included a review of roadway design literature relevant to bicycle facility retrofits and an analysis of bicycle-car crash data from the Houston-Galveston Area Council for the years 1999-2001.

Book Cycling and Society

Download or read book Cycling and Society written by Dave Horton and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-13 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the social sciences help us to understand the past, present and potential futures of cycling? This timely international and interdisciplinary collection addresses this question, discussing shifts in cycling practices and attitudes, and opening up important critical spaces for thinking about the prospects for cycling. The book brings together, for the first time, analyses of cycling from a wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, including history, sociology, geography, planning, engineering and technology. The book redresses the past neglect of cycling as a topic for sustained analysis by treating it as a varied and complex practice which matters greatly to contemporary social, cultural and political theory and action. Cycling and Society demonstrates the incredible diversity of contemporary cycling, both within and across cultures. With cycling increasingly promoted as a solution to numerous social problems across a wide range of policy areas in car-dominated societies, this book helps to open up a new field of cycling studies.
