Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-The Bickerstaff Partridge Papers by Jonathan Swift "Isaac Bickerstaff Esq" was a pseudonym used by Jonathan Swift as part of a hoax to predict the death of the then famous almanac maker and astrologer John Partridge. Jonathan Swift (Dublin, November 30, 1667-ibid., October 19, 1745) was an Irish satirical writer. His main work is Gulliver's Travels, ? which constitutes one of the most bitter, and at the same time satirical, criticisms that have been written against society and the human condition. A member of the Scriblerus Club, he anonymously published or used the pseudonyms of Lemuel Gulliver, Isaac Bickerstaff and M. B. Drapier to hide his satires. Of English parents, a modest lawyer and a housewife, Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin and was a posthumous son of his father, since he died shortly before he was born;all he owed to the charity of his uncle Godwin, who was in charge of educating the boy in the midst of great poverty, since his mother left the boy and returned to England. His family was related to numerous writers, especially his cousin John Dryden, who died in 1700, and the former Francis Godwin (1562-1633), and further and collaterally with Walter Raleigh and William Davenant; Even so, of all these only a utopian and satirical writer like Francis Godwin left some mark on his work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both the frame and substance of writing today owes much to the advancements that occurred in England between the Restoration and Romantic periods. The development of the novel set off the formation of new sorts and went with an ascent in education all through the nation. This volume looks at the English essayists who helped shape the social, political, and religious atmosphere of the age, and drenches understudies in the historical backdrop of accounts that keep on enchanting groups of onlookers today. This is a noteworthy and clear review of eighteenth-century scholarly life, giving a genuine feeling of the many-sided quality of the age and of the social and scholarly atmosphere in which innovative writing thrived. It thinks about a portion of the overwhelming topics of the period, contending against such marks as 'Augustan Age', 'Time of Enlightenment' and 'Time of Reason', which have been joined to the eighteenth-century by commentators and students of history. This book is a piece of the Tredition Classics arrangement.

He also expands his examination of possible textual corruption and adds hundreds of new glosses to help scholars, students, and general readers untangle the dense thicket of allusions that crowds every sentence of Joyce’s nearly inscrutable masterpiece.

Book The Life of Jonathan Swift

Download or read book The Life of Jonathan Swift written by Thomas Lockwood and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2023-10-02 with total page 487 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents a fresh account of the life history and creative imagination of Jonathan Swift Classic satires such as Gulliver’s Travels, A Modest Proposal, and A Tale of a Tub express radical positions, yet were written by the most conservative of men. Jonathan Swift was born in Dublin and spent most of his life in Ireland, never traveling outside the British Isles. An Anglo-Irish Protestant clergyman, he was a major political and religious figure whose career was primarily clerical, not literary. Although much is known about Swift, in many ways he remains an enigma. He was admired as an Irish patriot yet was contemptuous of the Irish. He was both secretive and self-dramatizing. His talent for friendship was matched by his skill for making enemies. He hated the English but yearned to live in England. The Life of Jonathan Swift explores the writing life and personal history of the foremost satirist in the English language. Accessible and engaging, this critical biography brings Swift’s writing and creative sensibility into the narrative of his life. Author Thomas Lockwood provides the historical and modern critical context of Swift’s prose satires and poetry, as well as his political journalism, essays, manuscripts, and personal correspondence. Throughout the book, biographically contextualized descriptions of Swift’s most famous works help readers better understand both the writing and the writer. Provides critical profiles of Gulliver’s Travels, An Argument Against Abolishing Christianity, Drapier’s Letters, and Swift’s other famous works Offers insights into Swift’s relationships with Esther Johnson, “Stella,” and Esther Vanhomrigh, “Vanessa” Highlights Swift’s poetry and how verse writing was a vital part of his creative being Summarizes and contextualizes lesser-known works such as The Conduct of the Allies Addresses the historic critical bias against comedy or satire as inferior forms of art, both in Swift’s lifetime and the present The Life of Jonathan Swift is an essential resource for general readers of literature and literary biography, university instructors and researchers, and undergraduate students taking courses in English literature.
