Book The Bibliographic Control and Preservation of Latin Americanist Library Resources

Download or read book The Bibliographic Control and Preservation of Latin Americanist Library Resources written by Dan C. Hazen and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report offers a baseline survey of the retrospective strength of, access to, and preservation of Latin Americanist resources in North American libraries. Information about collections, online bibliographic control, and the need for preservation is derived from analyses of a 550-item sample of Latin Americanist materials published between 1935 and 1965. Results of the analyses suggest that North American libraries have done a fairly good job of acquiring mainstream research materials from and about Latin America. Only 20 items from the 550-title sample are not held in the United States. Most are represented in the major online bibliographic utilities, OCLC and RLIN. Results suggest that continued funding for retrospective conversion and delayed original cataloging is a crucial component for increasing access to Latin Americanist publications. While findings highlight significant progress in providing machine-readable access to bibliographic records in Latin Americanist studies, they underscore the fact that preservation reformatting has so far saved only a small portion of the Latin American imprints. Four appendixes list projects for conversion and cataloging and details of study methodology. Fifty-two figures (graphs) illustrate relative holdings. (SLD)

Book Bibliography in Literature Folklore Language and Linguistics

Download or read book Bibliography in Literature Folklore Language and Linguistics written by David William Foster and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-02-11 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the academic world devoted to literary study has been absorbed with new and distinct forms of literary criticism, bibliography has received scant attention--much less than in former times when it was understood as more than just an aid to research. Enormous changes have taken place in enumerative bibliography over the past thirty years, especially with the widespread use of computers, but these changes have gone unrecognized as bibliography has gone unappreciated. This work is a collection of essays concentrating exclusively on bibliography and its uses in the academic world, especially in literature, folklore, language, and linguistics. The book begins with a discussion of what bibliography is, what it does, and how to create the optimum bibliography. Other subjects include bibliography and postcolonialism, critical theory and bibliography in cross-disciplinary environments, issues and problems with tools for feminist and women's studies scholars in literature, strategies for the incorporation of pluridisciplinary work, bibliographical databases and databased bibliographies, and ideas for the future of the MLA International Bibliography.
