Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations; Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible, Vol. 1: The Psalms Divisions. - We are accustomed to speak as if the Psalter were a single book but, accurately, it is five books drawn up at different times and placed side by side. In Revised Version this division is rightly maintained, and even in Authorised Version it may be traced by means of the doxology with which each book closes. Book I. Comprises Psalms i.-x1i.; Book II., xlil-lxxn. Book III., lxxiii-lxxxix. Book IV xc. - cvi. Book V., evn. - cl. There is some reason to believe, however, that originally the books were three, and that they were altered into five in imitation of the Pentateuch; the original divisions being i. - xli (2) xlii.-lxxxix., (3) xc.-cl. There can be no doubt that these books were compiled in the order in which they come down to us; yet we are not to imagine that all the early Psalms were comprised in the first book, and none but late Psalms in the fifth. An analogy with Hymns Ancient and Modern may help us here. A few years ago an appendix was issued, and this contains many hymns written since the first edition was published but also it goes over exactly the same ground as the original edition, and contains a sprinkling of ancient hymns. It is tolerably certain that originally the compilations were distinct, and that the various editors worked quite inde pendently. This is shown by the remarkable fact that the same Psalms, with slight variations, occur more than once, just as nowadays we may find the same hymn, with or without a slight change, in, say, Hymns Ancient and Modern and The Hymnal Companion. Thus Psalm liii. In Book II. Is the same as Psalm xiv. In Book I., and Psalm lxx. The same as vers. 13 - 17 of Psalm xl. And in Book V. Psalm cviii. Consists of five verses of Psalm lv11 added to six verses of Psalm lx these verses, of course, belonging to Book II. Clearly, if the compilers of the later books were endeavouring merely to supplement the earlier they would never have incorporated into their collections Psalms which they knew had already appeared. This book was released on 2016-09-28 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 3: Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Isaiah Parents, Wist ye not that I must be about My Father's business 1 till the hour when, on the cross, He cried, It is finished, He was always obedient to the will of God. 4. In that obedience, He was persevering through all trials. He sa s that He did not turn away back. Having commenced the work of saving men, e went through with it. IV. Behold the messrah As the peerless sufferer. (ver. It has been asked, Did God really die? No; for God cannot die, yet He who died was God so, if there be a confusion in your mind, it is the confusion of Holy Scripture itself, for we read, Feed the Church of God, which He hath purchased with His own blood. In addition to the pain, we are asked, in this verse, to notice particularly the contempt which the Saviour endured. The plucking of His hair was a proof of the malicious contempt of His enemies, yet they went still further, and did spit in His face. Spitting was regarded by Orientals, and, I suppose, by all of us, as the most contemptuous thing which one man could do to another; yet the Vile soldiers gathered round Him, and spat upon Him. I must point out the beautiful touch of voluntariness here: I hid not my face. Our Saviour did not turn away, or seek to escape. If He had wished to do so, He could readily have done it. Conclu sion Notice three combinations which the verses of m text will make. (1) Verses 2 and 6. Those verses together show the full ability of hrist to save. Here we have God and the Sufi'erer. (2) Verses 4 and 5. Here you have the Teacher and the Servant, and the two together make up this truth - that Christ teaches us, not with words only, but with His life. What a wonderful Teacher He is, who Himself learned the lessons which He would have us learn! (3) Now put the whole text together, and I think the result will be - at least to God's people - that they will say, Thrs God shall be our Gofor ever and ever and it shall be our delight to do His bidding at all times. It is a high honour to serve God and Christ is God. It is a great thing to be the servant of a wise teacher and Christ has the tongue of the learned. It is a very sweet thing to walk in the steps of a perfect Exemplar and Christ is that. And, last and best of all, it is delightful to live for Him who suf fered and died on our behalf. H. Spurgeon.) Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Vol. 2: Expository, Scientific, Georgraphical, Historical, and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible; Saint John Sacrificing all that was dearest and most elevating to His soul, and in spite of heat and pressure and conflict and weariness, calmly pursuing His labours of love amid the madding crowd's ignoble strife. But in the night-time. When men cannot work, no call of duty required His presence within the walls of Jerusalem; and those who are familiar with the oppressive foulness of ancient cities can best imagine the relief His spirit must have felt when He could escape from the close streets and thronged bazaars, to cross the ravine, and climb the green slope beyond it, and be alone with His heavenly Father under the starry night. But when the day dawned His duties lay once more within the city walls, and in that part of the city where, almost alone, we hear of His presence in the courts of His Father's house. And with the very dawn His enemies contrived a fresh plot against Him, the circumstances of which made their malice more actually painful than it was intentionally perilous. (archdeacon Farrar.) Praying must alternate with preaching - Jesus went unto the Mount of Olives. His usual oratory. There He prayed by night, and then early in the morning He came unto the Temple to preach. Thus He divided His time betwixt praying and preaching. 80 must all that will do good of it (see 1 Cor. Iii. (j. Trapp.) Preachers must pray much - Look at Baxter! He stained his study walls with praying breath, and, after he got anointed with the unction of the Holy Ghost, sent a river of living water over Kidderminster, and converted hundreds. Luther and his coadjutors were men of such mighty pleading with God, that they broke the spell of ages, and laid nations subdued at the foot of the cross. John Knox grasped in his strong arms of faith all Scotland: his prayers terrified tyrants. Whitefield, after much holy, faithful closet-pleading, went to the devil's fair, and took more than a thousand souls out of the paw of the lion in one day. See a praying Wesley turn more than ten thousand souls to the Lord! Look at the praying Finney, whose prayers, faith, sermons, and writings have shaken the half of America, and sent a wave through. How much earlier this former treatise may have been written is uncertain. But Dean Alford remarks that the words imply some considerable interval between the two productions. The opinion of the younger Thiersch thus becomes very probable, that it was written at Cwsarea during St. Paul's imprisonment there, an. 58 - 60. The Gospel of St. Matthew was probably written about the same time; and neither Evangelist appears to have used the other, although both made use of that form of oral teaching which the apostles had gradually come to employ. A stronger reason than these might be drawn from the presence in his name of Jehovah. Which appears to have been confined at the earlier periods of Israel's history to pro r names of the royal houses. But even this is not conclusive, and one rea y knows nothing of either Isaiah's forefathers or his upbringing. He was married, his wife is called the prophetess (viii. And he had two sons to whom he gave names symbolic of those aspects of the nation's history which be enforced in his prophecies She'ar-yashab, A remnant shall return, who was old enough in 736-735 to be taken by his father when he went to face Kin Ahaz (vii. And Maher-shalal-hash-baz, Spoil-speeds-booty-hastes, who was rn about a year later (viii. 1 The legend that Isaiah was twice married has been deduced from the false inference that the oung woman of marriageable age (vii. 14) was his wife. By this expression t e prophet probably did not mean a definite individual. The most certain and significant fact about Isaiah is that he was a citizen, if not a native, of Jerusalem, and had constant access to the court and presence of the king. Jerusalem is Isaiah's immediate and ultimate regard, the centre and return of all his thoughts, the hinge of the history of his time, the summit of those brilliant hopes with which he fills the future. The Book of Joshua is one of the most important writings in t 9 Old Covenant, and should never be separated from the Pentateuch, of which it is at once both the continuation and completion. Between this book and the five books of Moses there is the same analogy as between the four Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles. The four Gospels give an account of the transactions of Jesus Christ, the Christian legislature, just as the first five books of the Bible give, for the most part, of the doings of Moses, the Jewish legislator; and the Acts of the Apostles, as a book, bears the same relation to these Gospels as the Book of Joshua to the Pentateuch. They are pervaded by the same vein of thought, the same tone and tenor of feeling, the same peculiarities of conception and expression. They exhibit matter which is neither documentary nor traditional, but conveyed in the speaker's own words. Their aim is strictly hortatory their style earnest, heart-searching, impressive, in passages sublime, but throughout rhetorical they keep constantly in view the cir cumstances then present, and the crisis to which the fortunes of Israel had at last been brought. Moses had before him not the men to whom by God's command he delivered the law at Sinai, but the generation following which had grown up in the wilderness. Large portions of the law necessarily stood in abeyance during the years of wandering; and of his present hearers many must have been strangers to various prescribed Observances and ordinances. Now, however, on their entry into settled homes in Canaan a thorough discharge of the various obligations laid on them by the covenant would become imperative and it is to this state of things that Moses addresses himself. He speaks to hearers neither wholly ignorant of the law, nor yet fully versed in it. Much is assumed and taken for granted in his speeches again, on other matters he goes into detail, knowing that instruction in them was needed. Sometimes, too, opportunity is taken of promulgating regula tions which are supplementary or auxiliary to those of the preceding books some few modifications arising out of different or altered circumstances are now made and the whole Mosaic system is completed by the addition of several enactments (chaps. Xii. - xxvi.) of a social, civil, and political nature. These would have been wholly super uous during the nomadic life of the desert but now, when the per manent organisation of Israel as a nation was to be accomplished, they could not be longer deferred. Accordingly the legislator, at the command of God, completes his great work by supplying them. Thus he provides civil institutions for his people accredited by the same Divine sanctions as had been vouchsafed to their religious. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Biblical Illustrator, or Anecdotes, Similes, Emblems, Illustrations, Expository, Scientific, Geographical, Historical and Homiletic, Gathered From a Wide Range of Home and Foreign Literature, on the Verses of the Bible: St. Matthew Tun Nam - new Tasmanian - The term, New Testament, is unquestionably connected with the institution of the Lord's Supper. The Lord Himself designates the Eucharist the New Covenant in His blood, and this name is strictly correct. The New Testament fellowship of believers reconciled to God by Christ, which, so to speak, commences in, and is introduced by baptism, is completed and appears outwardly in the Holy Supper. In the Eucharist the Lord carries out that New Covenant with the Church which is founded upon His holy life and His Word, upon His atoning death, His victory, and on the conversion of individual believers. While the celebration of the Eucharist is a remembrance of the first foundation of the Church, it ever inaugurates anew the formation of the Church, and also serves for its manifestation. Hence the writings which record the foundation'of this new. And eternal Covenant are themselves called the New Covenant, the New Testament. Lastly, this designation indicates the connection and the contrast between these writings and those of the Old Covenant. (j. P. Lange, D.D.)
