Book Lessons for Life Based on the Lives of Abraham Isaac Jacob and Joseph

Download or read book Lessons for Life Based on the Lives of Abraham Isaac Jacob and Joseph written by Peter Elwood and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2019-03-22 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the 1970s and 1980s, my wife and I were privileged, together with a group of friends, John and Sally, Dennis and Freda, Dave, Richard and Gill, to lead a series of intensive Bible studies with a changing group of undergraduate students each Sunday evening during university term. In preparation for a study, we would meet one evening during the week to discuss the passage of scripture proposed for the following Sunday, and we would share together what we had each learned from commentaries and other sources. On Sundays, one of us would present the passage for perhaps an hour, and after coffee and biscuits, we would have forty minutes or more of open discussion. Those were life-changing evenings for me. I developed a deep respect for scripture, a longing to live it out, and a desire to share it. The studies came to an end smoothly and happily when John and Sally moved to Oxford. This prompted Margaret and me to leave our comfortable downtown church in Cardiff and offer to throw our lot in with a struggling small Baptist church in one of the Welsh valley towns. I offered to take a lead in Bible teaching within the church, and Margaret became involved in time off, a group for older women, and in a number of other community-based initiatives. After a few months, I was invited to accept leadership of the church as a layperson, an untrained Baptist pastor. After much thought and prayer, I accepted, and so commenced the happiest period of my married life and the busiest period for the both of us! Fourteen years later, the church moved to larger premises, led by a gifted local lad with reference to whom I often said, “I lectured the church. Wayne communicates to the people!” For each service in the church, I typed out an A4 essay on the Bible passage that had been preached, and at the end of the service, I stood at the door, said farewell to each person, and gave each of them a copy of my essay. In this way, I hoped that I might increase both the respect for scripture throughout the church and perhaps reinforce the memory of each passage presented in the sermon. When Margaret and I resigned from leadership of the church, I rewrote a series of twenty-eight sermons I had given in the church. I had these printed and bound together into a booklet and I gave a copy as a farewell gift to every person who attended the church. These essays have been further edited and are now published under the title A Medical Scientist Examines the Life of Jesus. The present volume is based on another series of sermons I had given in the church. These, too, have been edited and rewritten as a series of essays under the title Lessons for Life Based on the Lives of Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

Book excerpt: I firmly believe that every verse in the Bible has meaning for us today in the twenty-first century. If it did not, God would not have let it become part of the Bible. Every verse is there for a purpose, whether for encouragement, correction, guidance, or various reasons. I love studying Biblical characters, so I started writing this series of books. I think every personality in the Bible is fascinating, simply because they have meaning for us today. When I studied the character of Abraham, it was clear to me that the story of Abraham was likened to our spiritual walk and represented the steps and stages we would encounter in our lives. When I then turned to Isaac, I puzzled over him for a while, reading and re-reading the account of his life and wondering what the overall significance for us is today? Then I felt God say to me, "Isaac is like the Church today. He is a great man but achieves little." When God speaks to me like that, it still comes as a shock, but then when I look at it, yes, it's right. The Church is a great organisation, but it is achieving little today. Therefore, any burdened that the Church is achieving little need to study the character of Isaac and learn from him. This book seeks to recount the life of Isaac and look for deeper meaning related to us in the twenty-first century, but I must confess, I found this a difficult book to write, and I hope this does not detract from the content. Book excerpt: Throughout his life, Isaac remained a passive tent dweller. He did not go to find a wife; his servant brought a wife to him. He did not go to war; and when conflict arose, he withdrew. In the story of his binding, he was passive, and it appears as though he was bound forever on the altar. Isaac was dominated by his father Abraham, his wife Rebecca, Abimelech king of Gerar, and his sons Jacob and Esau. For most of his life, he is led by others, and his actions are reactions to the developing situations. He appears to have little personality and is better known as the son of his father Abraham, or the father of his sons Jacob and Esau.

Download or read book Bound by the Bible written by Edward Kessler and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-02 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sacrifice of Isaac is one of the most well-known stories in the Bible. It is also a shocking account of how Abraham's faith in God was demonstrated by a willingness to sacrifice his long-awaited son at God's command. This story has been a source of fascination for Jews and Christians for many centuries and here, Edward Kessler offers an enthralling account of Jewish and Christian interpretations of this biblical story. For understandable reasons, it has been assumed that Judaism influenced Christian interpretation but relatively little attention has been given to the question of the influence of Christianity upon Judaism. Kessler provides an insight into this absorbing two-way encounter and argues that neither Jewish nor Christian interpretations can be understood properly without reference to the other. As Jews and Christians lived, and continue to live, in a biblically orientated culture, Kessler shows how both were 'bound by the bible'.

Book The Three Princes of God

Download or read book The Three Princes of God written by RV and published by WestBow Press. This book was released on 2015-02-02 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What does God require? A humble heart, a willing spirit, and a life that He can control. God called Abraham to be His chosen vessel. And from him came Isaac and Jacob, and Jacob became Israel, from whom the Messiah was born. Through the obedience of one man, God accomplished what He wanted. He loved His creation too much to let them be, so he came down and rescued his chosen ones from their own self destruction. God Almighty called Abraham when he was a pagan, deeply involved with the cult of his fathers era. He desperately wanted to get out, but that was his culture and attempting to escape would have left Abraham with nothing. His father owned everything and was in control of Abrahams life. And if he left, where would he have gone? How about you? Are you trying to escape from the One that can give you what world cant give you? The Bible is my inspiration. I took a journey with my Savior and He has guided me to write this book to let others know how much He loves us. God is serious about saving souls, for it is said in John 3:16, For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting Life.

Book PERSONAL GOD STUDY the Life of Abraham and Binding of Isaac

Download or read book PERSONAL GOD STUDY the Life of Abraham and Binding of Isaac written by Cathleen Cowin and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-08 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was drawn into this study by the story of the binding of Isaac. Having been a student of organizational psychology in business school, and having run across some psychological commentary on The Binding, this Bible narrative originally caused me to stop and ponder the reactions and feelings of these two biblical figures involved: Abraham and Isaac. Throughout the Old Testament, we hear faith in the One True God defined as belief in the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob - the patriarchs of the Jewish and Christian faith. Their reputation as the Patriarchs makes these men seem so saintly, and yet their stories are human, and messy, and sometimes even confusing. These are the kinds of stories that make non-Christians ask the questions that start, "How could a good God....?" And we need to be ready to answer those questions without any whitewashing. And how is it that Isaac, a son put through what seems like a traumatic and scarring experience, is yet passed the torch of privilege and responsibility for God's eternal plan? Today we would expect him to have PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and sign up for psychiatric counseling! But how can you enter into this small window in the lifetimes of Abraham and Isaac that is known as The Binding without knowing what came before? What kind of men were they? What was their prior relationship with God that would lead them to such incomprehensible trust? How could they have such a traumatic encounter with God and act in faith rather than doubt and rebellion? So, while the study is ultimately motivated by the binding of Isaac, it starts at the beginning of Abraham's faith walk - the beginning of Abraham's transformation into that "patriarch" of faith - and it ends with the continuation of the promise in Isaac. And all of it has a thread throughout of the transformation of our faith from a God we know in baby faith, obedience and perhaps intellect, but who grows to be a God we know personally and experientially and trust with our lives.
