Book The Rocks Don t Lie A Geologist Investigates Noah s Flood

Download or read book The Rocks Don t Lie A Geologist Investigates Noah s Flood written by David R. Montgomery and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the mystery of the Bible's greatest story shaped geology: a MacArthur Fellow presents a surprising perspective on Noah's Flood. In Tibet, geologist David R. Montgomery heard a local story about a great flood that bore a striking similarity to Noah’s Flood. Intrigued, Montgomery began investigating the world’s flood stories and—drawing from historic works by theologians, natural philosophers, and scientists—discovered the counterintuitive role Noah’s Flood played in the development of both geology and creationism. Steno, the grandfather of geology, even invoked the Flood in laying geology’s founding principles based on his observations of northern Italian landscapes. Centuries later, the founders of modern creationism based their irrational view of a global flood on a perceptive critique of geology. With an explorer’s eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science, Montgomery takes readers on a journey across landscapes and cultures. In the process we discover the illusive nature of truth, whether viewed through the lens of science or religion, and how it changed through history and continues changing, even today.

Book The Bible Genesis Geology

Download or read book The Bible Genesis Geology written by Gaines R. Johnson and published by Gaines Johnson. This book was released on 2010-05-23 with total page 263 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does a time gap exist between the first two verses of Genesis? In this book you will learn about a controversial, lesser known literal interpretation of the Genesis narrative that does not contradict the scientific evidence for an Old Earth. Commonly called the "Gap Theory" or Ruin-Reconstruction interpretation, it is a theological interpretation much older than Darwin's Theory of Evolution. It is based on the Scriptural fact that in the second verse of Genesis, the Holy Bible simply and clearly states that the planet Earth was already here (but in a ruined state) before the creative process of the seven days even begins. The Bible itself provides insight into a great mystery in Earth's natural history at what is known as the Pleistocene - Holocene boundary. Science remains at a loss to definitively explain the Ice Age and the anomaly of the mysterious mega fauna extinctions across the face of the Earth about 12,000 to 10,000 Radio Carbon years ago. Geologic evidence from that period indicates extraordinary global massive volcanism, gigantic tidal waves, seismic activity on a vast scale, and extreme temperature swings on the Earth over a geologically brief period of time. It is no coincidence that the Bible at Genesis 1:2 describes the Earth as flooded, desolate, and in darkness in the time frame closely corresponding to these catastrophic events in the Earth's natural history. Clearly, these two mysteries are linked. The Earth has an ancient natural history that can be deciphered from the geologic record, but it also has an equally important ancient spiritual history that can only be deciphered from Rightly-Dividing the Holy Bible. Knowledge of both is required to correctly reconcile Geology and the Book of Genesis.

Book Building Blocks in Earth Science

Download or read book Building Blocks in Earth Science written by Dr. Gary Parker and published by New Leaf Publishing Group. This book was released on 2015-01-29 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Develop critical thinking skills as you explore what to believe and why you believe it! To understand earth science, it requires “teamwork,” combining the methods and evidences of both science and history. And if you also use the “history book of the world,” the Bible, you can make sense of the Earth’s surface — altered, formed, and weathered over time, the landscapes and vistas we enjoy today. Learn about the: Structure of the Earth and its atmosphere. Types of minerals and rocks, the water table, and types of volcanoes Earth's tornadoes, faults, polarity, magnetism, reeds, folding, hypercanes, deltas, and much more! When you understand the difference in history and science in questions related to our planet, you can more effectively discern the evidences seen in the world around you. Science is an awesome tool for understanding the workings of our world and for applying such knowledge to benefit mankind. “Scientific truth” however is not determined by consensus, compromise, majority vote, popularity, celebrity endorsement, money, media endorsement, or best-selling books — and it is at its best when it is rooted in a worldview that begins with the Bible!

Book Geology and Revelation The Ancient History of the Earth Considered in the Geological Facts and Revealed Religion

Download or read book Geology and Revelation The Ancient History of the Earth Considered in the Geological Facts and Revealed Religion written by James Dwight Dana and published by Library of Alexandria. This book was released on 2020-09-28 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: AMONG the various pursuits that engage the human mind, there are few so attractive as Geology, none so important as Revelation. Each of these two studies has an interest peculiar to itself. The one is chiefly concerned about the world in which we are living: the other about the world to which we are hastening. Geology leads us down into the depths of the Earth, and there, unfolding to our view a long series of strange unwritten records impressed on lasting monuments by the hand of Nature, it proceeds to trace back the history of our Globe through myriads of ages into the distant past. Revelation, on the other hand, comes to us from above; and setting forth the far more wonderful records of God’s dealings with man, holds out the hope of another world “everlasting in the heavens” which shall still remain when this earth and all the works that are therein shall have melted away with fervent heat. But, it may be asked, why should two such incongruous topics be set down for discussion side by side? To answer this question is to explain the scope and design of the present work. We are not going to write a Manual of Geology; nor yet a Treatise on Revelation. Taken separately, these two subjects have been handled with eminent skill and ability; the one by the votaries of Science, the other by the friends of Theology. It is our purpose to consider them not so much in themselves as in their mutual relations: to compare the conclusions of Geology with the truths of Revelation; and to inquire if it be possible to accept the one and yet not to abandon the other. An uneasy apprehension has long prevailed among devout Christians, and a declared conviction among a large class of unbelievers, that the discoveries of Geology are at variance with the facts recorded in the Book of Genesis. Now, the historical narrative of Genesis lies at the very foundation of all Revealed Religion. Hence the science of Geology, has come to be looked on with suspicion by the simple-minded faithful, and to be hailed with joy, as a new and powerful auxiliary, by that infidel party which, in these latter days, has assumed a position so bold and defiant. It is now confidently asserted that we cannot uphold the teaching of Revelation, unless we shut our eyes to the evidence of Geology; and that we cannot pursue the study of Geology, if we are not prepared to renounce our belief in the doctrines of Revelation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pulitzer Prize-winning view of the continent, across the fortieth parallel and down through 4.6 billion years Twenty years ago, when John McPhee began his journeys back and forth across the United States, he planned to describe a cross section of North America at about the fortieth parallel and, in the process, come to an understanding not only of the science but of the style of the geologists he traveled with. The structure of the book never changed, but its breadth caused him to complete it in stages, under the overall title Annals of the Former World. Like the terrain it covers, Annals of the Former World tells a multilayered tale, and the reader may choose one of many paths through it. As clearly and succinctly written as it is profoundly informed, this is our finest popular survey of geology and a masterpiece of modern nonfiction. Annals of the Former World is the winner of the 1999 Pulitzer Prize for Nonfiction.
