Book Scripture Culture and Agriculture

Download or read book Scripture Culture and Agriculture written by Ellen F. Davis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2008-10-13 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the theology and ethics of land use, especially the practices of modern industrialized agriculture, in light of critical biblical exegesis. Nine interrelated essays explore the biblical writers' pervasive concern for the care of arable land against the background of the geography, social structures, and religious thought of ancient Israel. This approach consistently brings out neglected aspects of texts, both poetry and prose, that are central to Jewish and Christian traditions. Rather than seeking solutions from the past, Davis creates a conversation between ancient texts and contemporary agrarian writers; thus she provides a fresh perspective from which to view the destructive practices and assumptions that now dominate the global food economy. The biblical exegesis is wide-ranging and sophisticated; the language is literate and accessible to a broad audience.

Book Biblical Holism and Agriculture Revised Edition

Download or read book Biblical Holism and Agriculture Revised Edition written by David J. Evans and published by William Carey Publishing. This book was released on 2020-04-22 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Because the World Matters. New generations are championing responsibility for both the environment and those peoples who depend upon it in all new ways. Biblical Holism and Agriculture addresses the urgent need for constructing a holistic perspective, grounded in the Bible, to appraise the economic, social, ecological, environmental, and spiritual impact of globalization and the unprecedented impact of powerful agricultural technologies, and marketing systems. The holistic biblical perspectives within reference ancient Hebrew insights about responsible freedom for “keeping” the land by people created in the image of God as representatives commissioned to stewardship and justice.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Food, Farming, and Faith looks at agricultural sustainability and Christianity. Using scripture and science, Gary W. Fick—a Christian agricultural scientist—demonstrates that faith can inform decisions about creating, managing, even consuming our food. The book highlights such topics as food and celebration, environmental care, ecology and faith, soil and water stewardship, animal welfare, and the impact of poverty on women and our food supply. Throughout, Fick presents and discusses biblical passages that comment on these areas and provides insight from personal experiences growing up in a ranching family, in teaching sustainable agriculture, and as a scientist. Ultimately, Fick challenges the reader to think about eating more thoughtfully so that we have good food, a healthy environment, and a comfortable lifestyle all at the same time.

Book Religion and Sustainable Agriculture

Download or read book Religion and Sustainable Agriculture written by Todd LeVasseur and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2016-10-21 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Distinct practices of eating are at the heart of many of the world's faith traditions -- from the Christian Eucharist to Muslim customs of fasting during Ramadan to the vegetarianism and asceticism practiced by some followers of Hinduism and Buddhism. What we eat, how we eat, and whom we eat with can express our core values and religious devotion more clearly than verbal piety. In this wide-ranging collection, eminent scholars, theologians, activists, and lay farmers illuminate how religious beliefs influence and are influenced by the values and practices of sustainable agriculture. Together, they analyze a multitude of agricultural practices for their contributions to healthy, ethical living and environmental justice. Throughout, the contributors address current critical issues, including global trade agreements, indigenous rights to land and seed, and the effects of postcolonialism on farming and industry. Covering indigenous, Buddhist, Hindu, Christian, Muslim, and Jewish perspectives, this groundbreaking volume makes a significant contribution to the study of ethics and agriculture.

Book The Bible in Relation to Agriculture Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible in Relation to Agriculture Classic Reprint written by J. D. Reynolds and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-21 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible in Relation to Agriculture What meaning can we give to this Hebrew understanding of the well being of the righteous and of the ill-being of the wicked? Can we apply to it the law of causation as it is understood in nature, or does it only mean the direct intervention of the Divine Will? Righteousness, or rightness, is capable of three interpretations: the rightness of the human spirit in perfect communion and accord wih the Divine Spirit, or a spiritual rightness; the rightness of the social being in perfect accord with social welfare, or social rightness; and the rightness of the work er in perfect accord with the laws of nature with which he works, or natural rightness. In this third sense we can trace the operation of cause and effect in producing the well-being of the righteous. Whatsoever a man soweth that shall he also reap, is true in the moral realm and equally true in the natural realm. And the conditions of righteousness in either realm are (1) Knowledge, and (2) Obedience. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Agriculture in Iron Age Israel

Download or read book Agriculture in Iron Age Israel written by Oded Borowski and published by Eisenbrauns. This book was released on 2009 with total page 268 pages. It describes crops and trees cultivated by the Israelite farmer and the methods and tools used in cultivation. The information is gathered from both literary and archaeological sources, with the Old Testament supplying most of the literary information. The author attributes several innovations to the biblical peasant: large-scale terracing, runoff farming (i.e. irrigation), restoration of soil fertility, and the invention of the beam oil-press. Out of print for some time, Eisenbrauns is pleased once again to make this valuable resource available.

Book An Agricultural Testament

    Book Details:
  • Author : Albert Howard
  • Publisher : Distant Mirror
  • Release : 2021-04

  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book An Agricultural Testament written by Albert Howard and published by Distant Mirror. This book was released on 2021-04 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is there a cow on the front cover of this book? This is a book about agriculture, and farm animals have become unfashionable in some quarters. Cows, it turns out, are responsible for global warming, climate change, and so, no doubt, rising sea levels and chemtrails. But any real farmer, from any time in history, knows that this is not true. Animals have been around forever. Animals are a vital part of an insanely complex living system. Anyone who knows the basics of regenerative agriculture understands this. Albert Howard spent years studying and using the methods of traditional Asian agriculture, and shows in this book that the fertility and health of the soil depend on humus, in the production of which animal materials play an vital role. A healthy soil needs animal inputs. Animals in agriculture are central; they're right in there with fungi. This message is not welcomed by those who would feed the modern world a diet of plant-based, lab-grown food substitutes that have lists of ingredients as long as your arm, and are going to save the planet using gene-spliced soybeans and 3D printed pizzas. So, the cow and her calf are on the cover to redress the balance, and also to feature as one of the stars of this book (along with sugar cane, waste pits, and public servants). She was the photogenic one. Albert Howard's text has been thoroughly re-edited in this new version of his book. The habit, common at the time, of using long paragraphs is not preferred by modern readers, so the text has been extensively 'reparagraphed'. Grammar has been tweaked, and styles have been adopted. Headings have been added, infinitives unsplit. The changes made have been to make things more comfortable for modern eyes and tastes. The sense and intention of the author has not been altered at all, of course. We hope that Albert Howard would approve of this reworking of his book. His ideas are more important than ever. Wendell Berry wrote in The Last Whole Earth Catalog "Howard's discoveries and methods, and their implications, are given in detail in An Agricultural Testament. They are of enormous usefulness to gardeners and farmers, and to anyone who may be interested in the history and the problems of land use. But aside from its practical worth, Howard's book is valuable for his ability to place his facts and insights within the perspective of history. This book is a critique of civilisations, judging them not by their artefacts and victories, but by their response to the sacred duty of handing over to the next generation, unimpaired, the heritage of a fertile soil."

Book excerpt: Ever since the Garden of Eden humans have worked to wrest sustenance and beauty from the soil. This great striving forms one of the most important parts of the Bible, and helps make it not only the world's most exalted spiritual guide, but also the most compelling "down-to-earth" narrative in literature.
