Book excerpt: The ocean dominates the surface of the earth and is in the pages of the Bible too. The Bible offers a view of the sea and the life it supports which affirms its intrinsic value to God as a good, and indeed essential, part of creation. At the same time, it also speaks perceptively of the sea’s vulnerability to damage and change. The Bible’s focus on the sea raises questions about economics and the interconnectedness of communities, whilst further references to the sea raise questions about our human-centredness and spirituality, and about our fear of chaos and disaster. In a unique collaborative project, the oceanographer Meric Srokosz and the biblical scholar Rebecca Watson not only offer environmental insights on the sea, but also connect the ocean with other key issues of broader concern—spirituality, economics, chaos, and our place in the world. Each chapter concludes with ideas for discussion and reflection, and for suggested actions in the light of the issues raised. The book will present a fresh new lens through which to view the Bible and as such inform biblical scholars, students, and preachers alike. Table of Contents: 1. The Sea and Salvation 2. The Sea and Spirituality 3. The God of the Sea and All that Fills It 4. Human Creatures and the Life of the Sea 5. The Sacred Sea 6. Coping with Chaos and Uncertainty: The ‘Chaotic’ Sea 7. Book Pathway to Understanding the Bible

Download or read book Pathway to Understanding the Bible written by Maxwell Adorkor and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-06 with total page 387 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Did God intend His Word to be difficult for us to understand? Is it God or man's fault that the Bible remains a mysterious book to most people? Is there a clear path provided by the Author of the Bible to make it easily understandable? Can the Bible be trusted at all? Do we add or subtract from its content? Who should even study the Bible? Are you aware of the battles being waged behind the scenes since ancient times against the Bible and those behind this? Just how many gospel messages do we have in the Bible anyways? Does this message ever change to suit the demands of a particular generation? Can this message be easily identified? Can we trace the source of false doctrines? Do you really know who Jesus was? What was His message? Why did He have to die on man's behalf? Who were His true killers? Did Paul and the other apostles amend His message or did they preach the same message? Do you really understand the main purposes behind God's commandments in the Old Testament? How about really understanding the writings of Paul in particular and the rest of the apostles in the New Testament? Does the teaching of Paul contradict that of his master Jesus Christ? What was God's purpose for creating man? Does God love some groups of people more than others? What brings blessings and / or curses? What does it mean to be righteous according to the Bible? What are the characteristics of a righteous person? Just what is the New covenant and what was it intended to achieve? Who is a neighbor according to Jesus Christ? Unlike the rest, this book discards the denominational approach of studying the Bible and takes the reader on chronological steps to have the Bible decoded and plainly sets the reader on a personal journey of studying it without the aid of a Concordance or a Commentary.

Book Calvin s Complete Commentary on the Bible

Download or read book Calvin s Complete Commentary on the Bible written by Calvin, John and published by Delmarva Publications, Inc.. This book was released on with total page 24355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All 46 of the original volumes are included in this one volume. There are two linked indexes in this volume, a main index at the front of this volume that will take you to the beginning each of the books of the bible and another index at the beginning of each book there is a linked scripture index leading to the particular subject. John Calvin is considered as the first truly great scholar of the Reformation. Indeed, he has even been seen by some to be one of history’s greatest Christian biblical scholars. He had an incredible command of the Bible, and his interpretations were not based on just one or two passages. He combined pastoral insight with solid exegesis to form a strong interpretation of the scriptures. However, some of his views on the prophetic interpretation, such as in the book of Daniel, are controversial. He put forth a purist view and believed that the prophecies in the book of Daniel applied solely to the history between the time of the prophet Daniel (530 BC) and Jesus’ first coming (30 AD). Nevertheless, John Calvin was a force to be reckoned with, and is considered to have a unique insight which enabled him to find the true meaning of the Bible. Dutch theologian Jacobus Arminius, after whom the anti-Calvinistic movement Arminianism was named, states that, “Next to the study of the Scriptures which I earnestly inculcate, I exhort my pupils to peruse Calvin’s Commentaries, which I extol in loftier terms than Helmich himself (a Dutch divine, 1551–1608); for I affirm that he excels beyond comparison in the interpretation of Scripture, and that his commentaries ought to be more highly valued than all that is handed down to us by the library of the fathers; so that I acknowledge him to have possessed above most others, or rather above all other men, what may be called an eminent spirit of prophecy. His Institutes ought to be studied after the (Heidelberg) Catechism, as containing a fuller explanation, but with discrimination, like the writings of all men.” During his life, Calvin produced commentaries on 48 books of the Bible, a total of 45 published volumes. He intended to put out a complete commentary of the Bible, but his death prevented this. The books of Judges, Ruth, 1 & 2 Samuel, 1 & 2 Kings, 1 & 2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Esther, Job, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Song of Solomon, 2 & 3 John, and Revelation were unfortunately not completed. He did, however, write a two volume commentary of the Harmony of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, and Luke) as well as a separate commentary for the gospel of John. Likewise, he also wrote a two volume series on the Harmony of the Law (Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy). Calvin’s own exegesis of the original text allowed him to bring out a unique and pleasing interpretation. He begins each section of scripture with his own translation of the text and then further expounds upon it, point by point, making it an excellent resource for ministers and teachers alike. After more than 400 years, Calvin’s commentaries are still a relevant and essential tool for Christians.
