And it seems but yesterday that Amraphel (the Hammurabi of the Inscriptions) was rescued from that same category. But these famous kings of ancient Babylon now stand out among the greatest figures of ancient history. And thus one after another of the assured results of modern criticism is destroyed by the spade of the explorer. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Facsimiles of Biblical Manuscripts in the British Museum The text of the Vulgate, such as the Lindisfarne and the Harley Gospels; ancient relics of the English Church, such as the (so-called) Psalter of Augustine and the Lindisfarne Gospels, which contain, in addition to their Latin texts, the earliest translations of these into English now extant; representatives of the revival of Biblical study in France under Charlemagne, in the Golden Gospels and the revised Vulgates of Alcuin and Theodulf; a beautiful specimen of English illumination in the Winchester Gospels of the time of Cnut; and an example of the standard text of the Latin Bible which emanated from the University of Paris in the thirteenth century. From the Bible of Western Christendom in general, we turn to the Bible of the English Church in particular, which was derived from it; showing in succession the versions of the Gospels and Of the Pentateuch which were produced about the year 1000 in southern England, the translations of the Psalter which are the first signs of the revival of the vernacular Bible after the Norman Conquest, and finally the two versions of the entire Bible produced by Wycliffe and his followers, which for the first time placed the Scriptures in the hands of the common people. One result of this method, it is hoped, will be that the reader will have nothing whatever to unlearn in the way of inaccurate de scription of and incorrect quotation from early editions. In a subject involving so many minute details it is, perhaps, too much to hope that errors have been avoided. Any inaccuracy brought under the writer's notice by any reader who has first consulted some standard Copy of the edition referred to in the text, will be gratefully corrected in future editions. Many of the words in the extracts from the early editions have been modernised in spelling in order to render them more intelligible to the reader unfamiliar with the forms and peculiarities commonly met with in fifteenth and Sixteenth century English books. This book was released on 2017-12-12 with total page 708 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1885-1890 Is the year 1886, a Subject Index of the Accessions of recently-published books added to the Library of the British Museum between January, 1880, and August, 1885, was issued. The present volume continues the work from September, 1885, to January, 1891, and contains an Index of the books published during the last ten years which have been added to the Library during the years 1886, 1887, 1888, and 1889, together with the greater part of those received in 1885 and 1890. Works in the Slavonic, Hungarian, Celtic and Oriental languages are not included in either volume. The primary object of the Index is to assist readers in their researches in the Library of the British Museum; it has not therefore been considered necessary to reproduce such portions of the General Catalogue of Printed Books as are of the nature of a Class Catalogue. Thus, the heading Bible will not be found in the present Index, although a considerable proportion of the Biblical literature of the last five years has been included, under such headings as Christianity, Church History, J ews, etc. For the same reason no personal names have been taken as subject headings, and the heading Biography has been used only for collected biographies, although such individual biographies as serve to illustrate History, Art, or Science have been frequently included, and will be found through out the work under various subject headings. Novels, poems, plays, and miscellaneous essays are also omitted, and only critical or historical works and selections will be found under such headings as Drama, Fiction, Hymns and Poetry. It should also be noted that when several editions of a book have been published during the period included in the present series, reference has been made only to the latest edition. Fortescue and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 1058 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Subject Index of the Modern Works Added to the Library of the British Museum in the Years 1880-1885 The Index is, of course, designed to supplement, not in any way to supersede, the General Catalogue; consequently no personal names will be found among the headings, nor has the heading Bible, which would have been one of the largest and most important entries in the work, been reproduced from the General Catalogue. Novels, Tales, Plays and Poems have also been omitted. A few words of explanation are necessary as to the general system of arrangement which has been followed throughout the work. The headings and subheadings are in strictly alphabetical order; precedence being given under each to the larger or more important works, and all books being as far as possible grouped together according to their language in the following order - English, French, German, Italian, Dutch, Danish, Swedish, Spanish and Portuguese. There are, however, some deviations from this system of arrangement: for example, in the history of each country the titles follow each other in chronological sequence, irrespective of language. But a very superficial comparison will show that this is not the case. There is indeed a fresh distribution of the psalter, and an attempt at reading the whole of the Bible once in the year; but this is not enough to enable us to say that the Colbertine Breviary is a reprint of the Quignon.
