A very important distinction exists, as might be exacted, between the agency which was in the first instance used for the propagation of the Christian faith, and that which, after the lapse of a few years, was systematically organized, and which continues in force up to the present day. During the first momentous period after the ascension of our Lord, the conversion of souls was accomplished by what may almost be termed chance-causes--that is, the outward machinery by which the truths of the Gospel were brought home to men's understanding, was the result, humanly speaking, of the circumstances in which the more immediate disciples of our Lord...
