Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Biblical Criticism I should hardly have ventured of my own accord to have undertaken what at the present moment is so serious a task as the attempt to write on the criticism of the Bible. But when requested by others to undertake the task I did not feel that I was justified in declining it. The question is a most important one in itself, and at the present moment it is supremely so. The defence of the traditional belief in regard to the Old Testament is at present the unpopular, or as has been suggested to me by a friend, the "unfashionable" side of the question. I am aware that in undertaking it I shall incur a great deal of hostile criticism. I have no right to shrink from such criticism. I have myself criticized freely, perhaps in some cases unsparingly, the views to which I have felt compelled to take exception. I shall therefore have no reason to complain if I am criticized unsparingly myself. I have not, however, I believe, treated any of those with whom it has been my misfortune to differ, with unfairness or disrespect. If I have misrepresented any one, I certainly have not done so intentionally. I may therefore, I trust, lay claim to candid treatment in return. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Criticism Again, criticism often means forming or expressing a judgment as to merits or demerits the word is thus used in such phrases as Art Criticism, Dramatic Criticism, and also in Literary Criticism in common usage. But this is not its meaning in the phrase we are considering; Biblical Criticism does not mean sitting in judgment on the Bible, as regards merit or demerit. Biblical Criticism in its widest sense consists of forming and Cxpressing judgments on such matters as the books to be included in the Bible, the exact contents of such books, their date, authorship, and manner of composition, the character of their contents, whether prose or verse, whether history, parable, symbolic narrative, or apocalypse. We may say a word or two as to the various branches of criticism. The first point to decide about the Bible is the books to be included in it, or the Canon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Modern Criticism It is undeniable that the universe, including ourselves, exists. Whence comes it all? For any clear-thinking mind there are only three possibilities. Hither the universe has existed always, it produced itself, or it was created by a Divine, a Supreme Being. The Universe Not Eternal. The eternity of the universe is most clearly disproved by its evolution. From a scientific point of view that hypothesis is now discredited and virtually abandoned. Astronomers, physicists, biologists, philosophers, are beginning to recognize more and more, and men like Secchi, Dubois-Rey-mond, Lord Kelvin, Dr. Klein and others, unanimously affirm that creation has had a beginning. Book The Higher Criticism and the Bible

Download or read book The Higher Criticism and the Bible written by William Binnington Boyce and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Criticism and the Bible: A Manual for Students 1. The controversy between the Sceptics and the Orthodox in the seventeenth and eighteenth century was generally conducted in accordance with the usages of the old historical evidential criticism, of which the characteristic trait is dependence upon accredited human testimony, as being the most satisfactory of all evidence. With this school of critics, internal evidence had a subordinate place, rarely if ever to be received in opposition to direct testimony. The exemplification of these safe critical principles is obvious in the writings of our Learners, and Paleys, and Whatelys. So we, on the ground mainly of the testimony of our Lord and His Apostles, receive the books of the Old Testament as genuine and authentic. Other reasons cogent and weighty are adducible in defence of our belief, but we feel that the testimony of credible witnesses is the surest ground upon which we can take our firm stand in the conflict with the Scepticism of our age. Book The Bible and the Critic Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Bible and the Critic Classic Reprint written by Charles Alexander Brodie-Brockwell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-26 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and the Critic In virtue of our wider knowledge, our truer perspective, and our more impartial and objective modes of thought, we can often solve Biblical problems to-day far more thoroughly and comprehensively than has ever been the case since the dawn of history. This may sound presumptuous, but it is better to be candid and face the facts than to assume an attitude of sanctimonious ignorance and morbidity, which is generally the cloak of conceit. Of course the Laudator temporal acti or the type of man who stepped reading thirty years ago, is still in our midst, and persists, from time to time, in chiming in, often in good faith. Is not this the presumption of science falsely so called? How have you come to hold this higher vantage ground of which you self-styled Higher critics boast? Can you furnish substantial grounds for your bold assertion that you are really wiser about some Bible questions than the Biblical authors themselves? How has your know ledge been increased a thousand-fold above even that of our immediate ancestors? The only real difficulty which confronts us in answering these questions is the lack of space incidental to every magazine article, which always renders it extremely difficult to'treat a great subject comprehensively, thoroughly, and with dignity. Our modern critical attitude towards the Bible - and this is the real question at issue, including as it does all thew previously raised - is mainly the product of three factors, ultimately reducible to one, that is, to a three-fold extension of our knowledge. This extension is due to three discoveries, which, regarded as organised branches of learning, constitute the three new sciences of I. Comparative Philology, II. Archaeology, and III. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Criticism How is it, then, that the Higher Criticism has become identified in the popular mind with attacks upon the Bible and the supernatural character of the Holy Scriptures? The reason is this. No study perhaps requires so devout a spirit and so exalted a faith in the supernatural as the pur suit of the Higher Criticism. It demands at once the ability of the scholar, and the simplicity of the believing child of God. For without faith no one can explain the Holy Scriptures, and without scholarship no one can investigate historic origins. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought: Or the Place of the Old Testament Documents in the Life of to-Day The author of the present volume was appointed to the Chancellor's Lectureship of Queen's University in 1906 and 1907, and delivered to the Theological Alumni Association the nine lectures which form the substance of the book. Chapter I., which now serves as an Introduction, appeared in 1901 as an article in The Biblical World (Chicago), and is reproduced by permission; Chapter XI. was read before The Philosophical Society of Queen's University in the autumn of 1906; the remaining three chapters, X., XIII., and XIV., were added to round out a little more the programme that the author had in mind. So much as to the origin of the book, now as to its plan and purpose. The title, though perhaps somewhat too general, indicates the spirit in which the work was undertaken. Considering the audience to which, in the first place, the lectures were to be addressed, it was thought advisable to attempt a general review of the Old Testament Problem. I am told, with admirable frankness, that the only condition laid upon me is that my tale be the true one; I am kindly given to under stand that the Directorate Of the publication have full confidence in my spirit and method, as these have been shown in my various works. For this confidence I am bound to utter my heartfelt and deep gratitude, in the belief that such a trust will inspire me to leave no jot or tittle of due exposition unrecorded. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reasonable Biblical Criticism Agnostic or cryptoagnostic criticism are not of neces sity precisely the same thing with what is currently called the newer criticism or the Modern View; but unfortunately the Modern View is saturated with agnostic elements. Many of the important articles in the Encyclopedia Biblica are from the point of view of men who would not shrink from being called agnostic. In the articles in several other recent books of reference, in such a volume as Driver's Introduction, and in a multitude of other books and articles, there is an element of agnosticism less outspoken, less sustained, less consistent. This'is true even of many works which are relatively so conservative that the bolder advocates of the Modern View regard them as mere compromise. In this little volume I am not attacking the Modern View as such, but only the agnostic or cryptoagnostic elements in it.
