Book A Condensed Anti Slavery Bible Argument Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Condensed Anti Slavery Bible Argument Classic Reprint written by A. Citizen of Virginia and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-02-07 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Condensed Anti-Slavery Bible Argument A multitude of things must ever bind my affections to the South. I was born on the banks of Virginia's beautiful river Potomac, where my parents spent a considerable portion of their existence, almost in sight of the place where the mortal remains of Washington are deposited. Almost all my relations are there, or in slaveholding states. All my early associations, all those untold bonds that bind us to the scenes of infancy and youth, most of those moral ties which unite us to those we love, for whom we have often prayed, and with whom we have taken sweet counsel together, and walk ed unto the house of God in company - are Virginians. With all thy faults I love thee still, my country - and still must love thee. Fellow-citizens, examine with me this important subject - and follow the guidance of the lamp of life in the path of duty, which is the sure road to Heaven. And let us remember the example of Virginia's noblest son, the Father of his country, who at the last hour, when the soul, in the light of an approaching eter nity, sees with peculiar clearness the boundaries which separate the wrong from the right, restored his slaves to their natural rights. And let us imitate one of Kentucky's bright stars, C. M. Clay, who in the face of all Opposition emancipated thirteen slaves, while yet in health of mind and body. Men never will abandon slave-holding, till they feel it to be a sin against God 5 and the reason why all who are now concerned in the support of this system, do not feel and act under this conviction is, because they have not examined it in the light of God's word. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christianity and Emancipation: Or, the Teachings and the Influence of the Bible Against Slavery Keeping this in mind, I ask again, does christianity sanction slavery? But we must also define Christian ity. The Ghent professor, with the very art of Vol taire, confounds Christianity with the Roman Catholic Church, and thus charges upon the gospel the hostility to liberty which he alleges against that church. But Christianity is not to be identified with any ecclesiasti cal system, nor with the Opinions and practices of any of its ministers or professors. It has its own text-book. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible and Slavery: A Brief Examination of the Old and New Testaments on Servitude The brief examination of the Bible on the subject of servitude, contained in the following pages, was first suggested to the writer by the perusal of a recent work on the Life and Epistles of the Apostle Paul, in which the word servant in the standard English version had been rejected, and that of slave substituted. Shocked and startled at the effect of this change on many passages, and more especially by the fact that Christ himself would be thereby presented to us as a slave-owner, and those for whom He died be supposed to render in return the involuntary service of slaves; the writer sought in vain from several Christian scholars for a satisfactory reason for refusing to accept it. Book Does the Bible Sanction American Slavery Classic Reprint

Download or read book Does the Bible Sanction American Slavery Classic Reprint written by Goldwin Smith and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Does the Bible Sanction American Slavery? The following pages are an expansion of a lecture delivered at the Manchester Athenaeum, and the author has to plead, as his justification for printing them, the wishes of some of his audience on that occasion. They treat of the subject stated on the title-page; not of the justice or wisdom of the present war, nor of the conduct of any American party. The argument is as much historical as theological; and the question whether the Book which Christendom regards as the rule of conduct is favorable to Slavery or to Free Labor, to the degradation or to the independence and dignity of the laboring class, is interesting to the statesman and economist, as well as to the divine. It will be remembered that we have no longer to deal with the question between immediate and gradual emancipation, as to which the greatest enemies of Slavery may fairly differ; nor with the excuses which may be made for those who have inherited a bad system not of their own creating, and which no reasonable man would desire to withhold. A complete change has of late taken place in the sentiments and language of the Southern States on the subject of Slavery. That which was regarded and spoken of by Washington and the statesmen of his time as a transient evil, is now declared to be a permanent good, and not only a permanent good, but the best of all social institutions. Book Slavery the Bible Infidelity Classic Reprint

Download or read book Slavery the Bible Infidelity Classic Reprint written by William Weston Patton and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Slavery the Bible Infidelity The Bible is the Word of God. This is the truth which runs a dividing line between infidels and christians. The infidel asserts that it is "a cunningly devised fabIe." of human origin alone, intended to impose upon the credulity of the ignorant mass and only received by the intelligent for selfish reasons. The christian on the other hand contends that "all scripture is given by inspiration of God," and was written by "holy men of God, who spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost," and that consequently all are bound to believe its doctrines and to live in accordance with its precepts. The evidence in proof of the inspiration of the Bible is of two kinds, external and internal. The external evidence embraces the arguments derived from miracles. prophecy, and the success which has attended the propagation of Christianity. The internal evidence, to use the language of Bishop Horne, is derived from "the sublime doctrines and tlie purity of the moral precepts revealed in the Scriptures - the harmony subsisting between every part, - their miraculous preservation - and the tendency of the whole to promote the present and eternal happiness of mankind, as evinced by the blessed effects which are invariably produced by a cordial reception and belief of the Bible - together with the peculiar advantages possessed by the Christian revelation over all other religions. It may be well to remark here that one of the above specifications (to it, the miraculous preservation of the Scriptures, ) would more properly be included in the external evidences. A more concise definition of the internal evidence of Christianity is given by the celebrated Methodist divine, Richard Watson, as "that which arises from the apparent excellence and beneficial tendency of the doctrine." In what way have infidels attacked Christianity' They have assailed It in both the points which have been mentioned, but until of late, principa y by denying the existence of the miracles and prophecies which constitute the main strength of the external evidence. From the days of the Sanhodrin who pretend that Christ did not rise from the dead, but the body was stolen by his disciples, to the days of Thomas Paine pretty much one course has been pursued. There has been indeed an occasional and feeble attack upon the doctrines and precepts of the Bible, as for instance when Hume attempted to show that "Humphty ought to be struck off from the catalogue of virtues and placed on the catalogue of vices;" but the strength of argument and the power of wit and sarcasm on the infidel side, has been principally expended in attempts to meet the evidence in favor of Christianity drawn from miracles and prophecies. I think a reference to the works of Celsus, Porphvry, Bohnbroke. Hume, VoItaire, Rousseau, Gibbon and Paine, will justify this assertion.
